English grammar (34) …………than anything else. While English grammar does play a part
when taking courses to improve English overall, it is but a small part of the overall curriculum
where one becomes immersed in a (35)………… that was partly influenced by myths, battles,
and legends on one hand, and the everyday workings of its various social class on the other.
(36) …………the Encyclopedia Britannica, the English language itself really took off with the
invasion of Britain during the 5th century. Three Germanic tribes, the Jutes, Saxons and Angles
were seeking new lands to conquer, and crossed over from the North Sea. It must be noted that
the English language we know and study through various English language courses today had yet
to be created as the (37) …………of Britain spoke various dialect of the Celtic language.
During the invasion, the native Britons were driven north and west into lands we now refer to
as Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The word England and English originated from the Old English

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
Our earliest insights into the shapes of viruses came when Helmut Ruska imaged plant and
animal viruses for the first time in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). These images
were published in 1939. At this time, J.D. Bernal and Isidor Fankuchen were beginning to work
on X- ray diffraction of concentrated preparations of plant viruses, including tobacco mosaic
virus (TMV) and tomato bushy-stunt virus (TBSV)- showing thfe former to be a long
filamentous structure and the latter to be a spherical one.
The work started by Bernal was continued at Birkbeck college, where he recruited Rosalind
Franklin to study the detailed structure of TMV. She showed it to be a helical assembly and
defined] the spatial arrangements of protein and RNA. Based on the work of Franklin’s
collaborator anci friend Don Caspar, Crick and Watson proposed that spherical viruses assemble
with icosahedral symmetry. Using delightfully anachronistic language, these viruses were said to
be likely t( resemble a ‘rather symmetrical mulberry’ assembling from 60 protein subunits.
Initial theories of icosahedral symmetry in spherical viruses were insufficient, as mair^
viruses were shown to form larger assemblies comprising many hundreds of capsid proteins. Do 11
Caspar and Aaron Klug addressed this by formulating their theory of quasi-equivalent packing i
icosahedral viruses. Building on emerging knowledge, they set out how larger capsids might
assembled by the introduction of small variations in bonding relationships between protein
subunit.

the correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
An oft-repeated tale attributes Nobel’s creation of the Prizes to a mistaken obituary. As the
story goes, in 1888 Nobel’s brother Ludvig, who had been dubbed the “Russian Rockefeller” for
his role in establishing that country’s oil industry, died. The European press mistook Ludvig for
Alfred.
Some speculate that reading these reports motivated Nobel to use the fortune he had amassed
from manufacturing arms to establish prizes that would recognize mankind’s benefactors.
However, there are some suggestions that other elements ofrthe tale may not be true.
In 1895, Nobel wrote his third and last will, establishing the five prizes: chemistry, literature,
physiology or medicine, physics, and peace. He died the following year, and the first prizes were
given out in 1901. While awarding prizes for chemistry and physics was an obvious choice for
the inventor and engineer Nobel, the rationale for a peace prize is less obvious.
It is possible that Nobel wished to compensate for dynamite and other inventions that could
be used for destructive purposes, as well as his many business interests in the armaments
industry. His will was also shaped by the fact that, though he had several relationships with
women, he never married and died without an heir to whom he could leave his fortune.
I One of these women was an Austrian named Bertha von Suttner, who answered an advert
that » Nobel had placed in the newspaper: “Wealthy, highly educated, elderly gentleman (he was
in fact only 43 at the time) seeks lady of mature age, versed in languages, as secretary and
supervisor of household.” Though she worked for Nobel only two years before marrying an
Austrian count, von Suttner became a fierce proponent of disarmament and eventually received
the 1905 Nobel Prize for Peace herself. It is possible that her advocacy helped spur Nobel to
establish the peace prize.
