Is a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He is mainly known for his works Dr.
Slump and Dragon Ball and for the character designs of the Dragon Quest and Chrono
Trigger sagas. His main influences were Astroboy by Osamu Tezuka, 101 Dalmatians by
Walt Disney and, mainly, Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng'en. Also, it was based on the
Chinese legend of the Monkey King.
TOUCHING THE SKY WITH DRAGON BALL
The series that would make Akira Toriyama go down in history inside and outside of Japan, to
the point of having become one of the best-known manga in the world, was Dragon Ball.
Toriyama had written a short story called Dragon Boy, before writing Dr. Slump. Well, Dragon
Ball is the reworking of Dragon Boy and its plot consists of the adventures of Son Goku and
his friends.
In the midst of the monumental quest for the seven magical spheres whose union can invoke
the presence of the great dragon god, Shen Long, who can grant a wish to its summoner.
The formula of searching for spheres, facing dangers and, finally, making a wish is repeated
tirelessly throughout the 42 Dragon Ball books that were published.
Beyond the acceptance achieved with the publication of the manga, the real success came
when the stories of Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball became animated series. These reached a
huge audience level; particularly Dragon Ball, which generated a massive amount of
merchandise (clothing, video games and all kinds of toys alluding to the characters, both
heroes and villains).
The great popularity reached practically all the countries where it was broadcast and
obtained the highest audience levels. Dragon Ball ended up becoming a cultural
phenomenon: for example, phrases like "I have to increase my Ki" became popular
during the 1990s, alluding to common dialogues or situations in the series.
The animated series of Dragon Ball Z (the name given to the televised version once Son
Goku became an adult) has been translated into Spanish (Latin America and Spain),
Catalan, Basque, Galician, English, French, Italian, Portuguese and others. Languages. The
series produced by the Shueisha Company concluded in 1996 and until that year it was
broadcast from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the Fuji Telecasting network in Japan.
