Case study 1 - Causes of the earthquake


• Movement of conservative plate margins (2 plates moving past each
other)
• Caribbean plate and North American plate
• One plate was moving faster than the other plate hence caused
friction
• Caused an earthquake with magnitude of 7.0 on the ritcher scale

Case study 2 - Impacts of earthquake


• Destruction of airport and buildings which made getting help from
other countries harder
• Destruction of buildings and hospitals which caused unemployment
among the citizens but mostly in the clothing industry of Haiti
• Destruction of hospitals and public places lead to over crowding and
spread of water diseases such as cholera
• Lack of space lead to piling of bodies on streets of Haiti
• There were many landslides later on

Case study 3 - management - most help gained by USAID


• Emergency food providence for 4 million people for 3 months after
the earthquake
• Provided with resources for shelter for 1.3 million
• Sent 7 rescue teams and saved uptown 130 lives
• Sanitation - built up to 25 water system across the country and
other water facilities

• Set up HOUSING AND PUBLIC BUILDING CONSTRUCTION UNIT
which provides construction codes for manufacturing better housing
units to withstand earthquakes
• Tools and instruments were set to for tell earthquakes and warning
systems were made
• Training to 127 ministry officials for disaster risk management was
given
• Manufacturing of barrier to reduce destruction by water from seas
side
