• Movement of conservative plate margins (2 plates moving past each other) • Caribbean plate and North American plate • One plate was moving faster than the other plate hence caused friction • Caused an earthquake with magnitude of 7.0 on the ritcher scale
Case study 2 - Impacts of earthquake
• Destruction of airport and buildings which made getting help from other countries harder • Destruction of buildings and hospitals which caused unemployment among the citizens but mostly in the clothing industry of Haiti • Destruction of hospitals and public places lead to over crowding and spread of water diseases such as cholera • Lack of space lead to piling of bodies on streets of Haiti • There were many landslides later on
Case study 3 - management - most help gained by USAID
• Emergency food providence for 4 million people for 3 months after the earthquake • Provided with resources for shelter for 1.3 million • Sent 7 rescue teams and saved uptown 130 lives • Sanitation - built up to 25 water system across the country and other water facilities
Case study 4 - solutions
• Set up HOUSING AND PUBLIC BUILDING CONSTRUCTION UNIT which provides construction codes for manufacturing better housing units to withstand earthquakes • Tools and instruments were set to for tell earthquakes and warning systems were made • Training to 127 ministry officials for disaster risk management was given • Manufacturing of barrier to reduce destruction by water from seas side
