Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
In the past, technology and progress was very slow. People "invented" farming 12,000 years ago but it
took 8,000 years for the idea to go around the world. Then, about 3,500 years ago, people called "potters"
used round wheels to turn and make plates. But it took hundreds of years before some clever person thought,
if we join two wheels together and make them bigger, we can use them to move things.
In the last few centuries, things have begun to move faster. Take a 20th-century invention like the
aeroplane, for example. The first aeroplane flight on 17 December 1903 only lasted 12 seconds, and the
plane only went 37 metres. It can't have been very exciting to watch, but that flight changed the world.
Sixteen years later, the first plane flew across the Atlantic, and only fifty years after that, men walked on the
moon. Technology is now changing our world faster and faster. So what will the future bring? One of the
first changes will be the matter we use. Scientists have just invented an amazing new material called
graphene, and soon we will use it to do lots of things. With graphene batteries in your mobile, it will take a
few seconds to charge your phone or download a thousand gigabytes of information! Today, we make most
products in factories, but in the future, scientists will invent living materials. Then we won't make things like
cars and furniture in factories - we will grow them! Thirty years ago, people couldn't have imagined social
media like Twitter and Facebook. Now we can't live without them.
But this is only the start. Right now, scientists are putting microchips in some disabled people's brains,
to help them see, hear and communicate better. In the future, we may all use these technologies. We won't
need smartphones to use social media or search the internet because the internet will be in our heads! More
people will go into space in the future, too. Space tourism has already begun, and a hundred years from now,
there may be many hotels in space. One day, we may get most of our energy from space too. In 1941, the
writer Isaac Asimov wrote about a solar power station in space. People laughed at his idea then, but we
should have listened to him. Today, many people are trying to develop a space solar power station. After all,
the sun always shines above the clouds!
Question 34: The writer says that in the past ________.
A. most inventions were to do with farming B. it took time for new ideas to change things
C. people didn't want to use wheels D. people didn't invent many things
Question 35: Why does the writer use the example of the aeroplane?
A. To explain how space travel started.
B. To show how an invention developed quickly.
C. To explain why transport changed in the 20th century.
D. Because he thinks it's the most important invention in history.
Question 36: What does the writer say about the future of communication?
A. We won't use the internet as much.
B. We won't need devices like smartphones.
C. We can't know what the most popular social media will be.
D. Microchips will become faster.
Question 37: The best title for the article would be_______.
A. Progress now and then B. Man in space
C. Will computers rule the world? D. More and more inventions
Question 38: What does the writer say about space solar power?
A. It's an old idea, but people are only starting to develop it now.
B. People tried it in 1941, but they didn't succeed.
C. It's much easier to build a solar power station in space than on Earth.
D. It's a science fiction idea, and nobody really thinks it will work.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your ans wer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Throughout history, various people have demonstrated a high degree of confidence in the ability of
certain animals to predict the weather. It may seem surprising today in view of the complex equipment now
involved in weather forecasting to understand that in certain cases, the behavior of animals does indeed
provide an indication of inclement weather. Sensitivity of certain animals to falling air pressure or to low-
frequency sound waves that humans cannot hear, which are indicators of approaching storms, causes
behaviors in animals that certain societies have come to recognize as predictors of storms.
A number of animals are remarkably sensitive to variations in air pressure, and some of these animals
show consistent, noticeable, and predictable behaviors as air pressure drops before a storm hits. When the air
pressure drops before a storm, some animals move closer to the ground to equalize the pressure in their ears:
some birds such as swallows tend to stay on the ground or roost in trees instead of soaring in the skies when
a storm is imminent because of the decreasing air pressure. Other animals make more noise than usual as air
pressure drops: an unusual amount of quacking by ducks and a high volume of croaking by frogs are both
indicators that are believed to occur because of the high degree of sensitivity of ducks and frogs to the
change in pressure. Finally, still other animals become more active before storms as a reaction to the falling
air pressure: dolphins and porpoises seem to be taking part in a frenzied sort of play, and bees and ants
become more active prior most likely because of their sensitivity to lower pressure.
There is good reason to believe that the fact that these animal behaviors seem to occur regularly prior to
storms may have a scientific basis and that the animals demonstrating these behaviors may actually be good
short- range weather forecasters. However, their ability to predict long-range weather patterns is rather
suspect. Certain proverbs, for example, are based on what is most likely the idea that squirrels are good
indica weather patterns. One proverb indicates that, if a squirrel seems busier than usual in gathering nuts,
then a long and cold winter is on its way; however, this behavior in squirrels is more likely due to a large
supply of nuts available for gathering, which occurs because of earlier good weather, and is not an indicator
of cold weather to come. Another proverb about squirrels indicates that if a squirrel grows a long and bushy
tail in the fall, then a particularly harsh winter is on its way; in this case too, the squirrel develops a long and
bushy tail because of earlier good weather and not as a warning of bad weather to come.
Question 39: Which of the following happens when air pressure drops before a storm?

Chat GPT is a language model developed by Open Al that uses deep learning techniques to generate
human-like responses to text-based prompts or questions. GPT stands for "Generative Pre- trained
Transformer". The GPT model is capable of generating coherent and contextually relevant responses to a
wide range of prompts, making it useful for a variety of applications, such as chatbots, language translation,
and content creation. Chat GPT gets its information from a vast corpus of text data that has been
preprocessed and used to train the model. This corpus includes a diverse range of sources, such as books,
articles, web pages, and other forms of text-based content that are available on the Internet.
However, the responses it generates can incorporate knowledge and information that it has learned from
this training data. People wonder if this tool will eliminate the majority of jobs and put a huge majority of
them out of work. The development of advanced language models like Chat GPT has led to concerns that
they could replace human workers and lead to job losses. While it is true that these models are capable of
automating certain tasks that were previously performed by humans, they are not necessarily designed to
replace human workers. Instead, language models like Chat GPT are often used to increase human labor,
enabling workers to be more productive and efficient in their roles. For example, they can be used to assist
customer service representatives by answering common questions, freeing up their time to focus on more
complex issues. They can also be used to improve the accuracy and efficiency of translation services or to
generate content for news articles, social media posts, and other forms of written content.
In some cases, the development of language models may lead to the displacement of certain jobs, but
they also offer new opportunities in fields such as machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence.
It is important to consider the potential impacts of these technologies on the job market and to take steps to
ensure that workers are trained and equipped to adapt to these changes. Ultimately, the impact of language
models like Chat GPT on the job market will depend on how they are implemented and used in various
industries and sectors.

Lee Kuan Yew was appointed as the first prime minister of Singapore in 1959 when the nation became
one of the self-governing states. At that time, Singapore per capita income was only about USD 400. When
Lee retired in 1990, the figure was USD 11,000 and in 2014 it went up to over 56,000 even higher than that
of its former colonizer, Great Britain. In his impassioned speeches and his famous memoirs, he said "there
were also some probable opponents and they laughed at us, but I was confident that we would have the last
laugh."
Born into a middle-class Chinese family in Singapore, Lee was influenced by the language and
institutions of the British rulers. He was destined to go to the UK to study law, but the Second World War
broke out and he had to go to the local Raffles College where he learnt some economics. It was not until
1946 when he talked his way to Cambridge and graduated three years later with a starred first. It was during
this time that he nurtured ambitions beyond starting a legal career back home.
As a prime minister, he has always been described as an efficient and inventive person. He was one of
the greatest statesmen who proved to the whole world that human ingenuity, not natural resources, is the
essential element of prosperity. Lee is also believed to be very forward-looking. When Singapore gained
independence in 1965, he decided to keep English as the main language to increase economic benefits.

Hernando Guanlao loves books, but unlike most bookworms, Hernando has so many that they spill out
into the street, where his bookcases and shelves line the road. The reason is that Hernando Guanlao has
turned his home in Manila, the Philippines, into his very own public library. In this library for the poor, the
only rule is that there are no rules!
The library is open all day and all night, seven days a week. Any passer-by who wants a book just walks
up and takes whatever he or she wants. It's all free, they don't need a library card and there are no late fees if
they don't return the books within two weeks. In fact, there is no pressure to return them at all! You might
think that there would be fewer and fewer books each day, but, amazingly, after starting with around a
hundred books, Hernando now has a collection of between two and three thousand - his readers are actually
adding their own books to his library!
Hernando launched his Reading Club 2000 over a decade ago to honour his parents, who had recently
died. His idea was to encourage reading and create a love of learning. So one day, he placed a small
collection of battered books at the side of the road. Passers-by didn't know what to make of it in the
beginning. What were all these books doing there? Were they for sale? They soon got the idea, though, and
the library now has a steady stream of booklovers, watched over by a proud Hernando.
Hernando is so dedicated to the idea of books for everyone that you can order one and when he gets it,
he'll even bring it to your house on his „book bike’. In the future, he's going to take his collection out on the
book bike to the poor villages that either haven't heard of him or can't reach him. In a country where there
aren't that many libraries, and you might have to pay to borrow a book, Hernando is a true hero. As
Hernando himself says, "You are wasting these books if you put them in a cupboard or a box. A book should
be used and reused. It has a life, it has a message."

Few works of art have made such an impact on the world as Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Yet why
has this painting made such an impression on us? To many people's minds it's because of the lasting power
of her unique and enigmatic smile. Smiling is a universal expression that captures our imagination and lifts
our spirits; be it the Mona Lisa's mischievous smirk or a loved one's beaming grin, reaching from ear to ear.
However, what's in a smile and why do we do it? Scientists are now examining this simple act to reveal its
mysterious secrets and powers.
Smiles seem to be as natural to us as breathing. Smiling has been recorded in babies in the womb, as a
reflex, just as making the motions of breathing and blinking are. And even blind babies smile when they
feel happiness, for example at the sound of their mother's voice. In this context it's not surprising that smiles
have a long history in our evolution. In fact, the roots of smiling go all the way back to our primate heritage.
Primates often show their teeth to communicate fear or readiness to attack, but our ability to smile most
likely developed from how primates also draw back their lips to show closed teeth as a sign of non-
aggression.
And yet, smiles are not quite so simple. First of all, there are two kinds of smile involving totally
distinct muscle groups. The polite 'social smile' involves muscles around the mouth and the cheeks. Some
people think it is not as sincere as the smile that also engages the muscles around the eye area. This kind of
smile, the Duchenne smile-named after the scientist who first recognized the difference between the two
types - displays real emotional warmth.
While smiles might express various degrees of sincerity, it seems their beneficial effects remain the
same regardless. This is because the act of smiling has proven therapeutic benefits and may even be
essential for good health. It increases the level of reward neurotransmitters such as dopamine, releases
mood- enhancing endorphins, and lowers blood pressure. Charles Darwin, the scientist who developed the
theory of evolution, noticed this and postulated that smiling is more than a mere response to positive
emotions, but is pleasure-inducing in and of itself. These transformative effects are also infectious and can
be passed on to others. The people around you will return the smile you give them and then their bodies
begin their own cycle of feel-good changes, too.
So, the next time you're unhappy or worried and someone tells you to 'grin and bear it', maybe you
should follow their advice, and you might really feel your troubles fly away.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Apologies are powerful. They resolve conflicts without violence and restore equilibrium to personal
relationships. They can be a sign of strength: proof that the apologizer has the self-confidence to admit a
mistake.
Apologies, like so many other communication strategies, begin at home. In the American context, there
is ample evidence that women are more inclined to offer an expression of contrition than men. One woman,
for example, told me that her husband's resistance to apologizing makes their disputes go on and on. Once,
after he forgot to give her a particularly important telephone message, she couldn't get over her anger, not
because he had forgotten (she realized anyone can make a mistake) but because he didn't apologize. "Had I
done something like that," she said, "I would have fallen all over myself saying how sorry I was... I felt as
though he didn't care." When I asked her husband for his side of the story, he said apologizing would not
have repaired the damage. "So what good does it do?" he wondered.
The good it does is to cement the relationship. By saying he was sorry - and saying it as if he meant it –
he would have conveyed that he felt bad about letting her down. Showing that you empathize provides the
element of contrition, remorse, or repentance that is central to apologies - as does the promise to make
amends and not repeat the offense. In the absence of these, why should the wife trust her husband not to do
it again?
Apologies can be equally powerful in day-to-day situations at work. One company manager told me that
they were magic bullets. When he admitted to subordinates that he had made a mistake and then expressed
remorse, they not only forgave him but became even more loyal. Conversely, when I asked people what
most frustrated them in their work lives, co-workers refusing to admit fault was a frequent answer.
