Procedure

Ice and water #1

The first thing we did was measure the mass of ice using the scale, ice (78g).
Then we measured the volume of water (240ml) and combined the water and
the ice in a container. We measured its initial temperature, which was 76°C, and
the final temperature, which was 36°C.

Ice and water #2

With ice, we did the same, ice (180g) and the volume of water (250ml). Initial
temperature 85°C and final temperature 16°C.

Heat calculation

Ice#1
Q=mcΔT
m= 78g Q= (78g)(4. 18J/g°C)(-40°C)
c= 4.18J/g°C Q= -13,041.6J
ΔT= -40
Water#1
Q=mcΔT
m= 240g Q= (240g)(4. 18J/g°C)(-40°C)
c= 4.18J/g°C Q= -40,128J
ΔT= -40

Ice#2
Q=mcΔT
m= 180g Q= (180g)(4. 18J/g°C)(-69°C)
c= 4.18J/g°C Q= -51,915.6J
ΔT= -69

Water #2
Q=mcΔT
m= 250g Q= (250g)(4. 18J/g°C)(-69°C)
c= 4.18J/g°C Q= -72,105J
ΔT= -69

Cuestionary

What is the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions?

Give two examples of each.
A// An Endothermic Reaction is a chemical reaction that absorbs energy in the
form of light or heat. In this reaction, the energy or enthalpy of the reactants is
lower than that of the products. An Exothermic Reaction is a chemical reaction
that releases energy in the form of light or heat.
Endothermic: Photosynthesis and melting of ice.
Exothermic: Combustion and neutralization reactions.

In what direction does heat always Flow?

A// Heat always flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower
temperature.

Name three materials that are especially Good thermal conductors and
three that are Good thermal insulators.
A// Good Thermal Conductors: Copper, aluminum and silver.
Good Thermal Insulators: Fiberglass, polystyrene and wood.
