Preparation: 5 minutes Marxism is the name for a set of political and economic ideas that come from the works of
Presentation: 10 minutes Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Its core idea is that the world is divided into classes-
the bourgeoisie, or business owners who control the means of production, and the proletariat
or workers whose labor transforms raw commodities into economic goods.

Karl Marx was a German political thinker who wrote about economics
and politics. He believed that no economic class — wage workers,
landowners, etc. should have power over another.
Marx believed that everyone should contribute what they can, and
everyone should get what they need.

Marxism refers to the social, political, and economic theories of Karl

Marx, including the belief that struggles between social classes are a
major force in history and that in the future, there should be a society

with no social classes.

Marx believed that the division between capitalists and laborers should not exist, that everyone
should be equal, giving everyone the same rights, the same education, equal share of food,
properties, and money, totally eliminating capitalism or free market.

Marxist literary theories show class conflict and class distinctions through the use of literature.
Marxist theorists employ traditional techniques of literary analysis but put the focus on the
social and political content and meaning of literature.

Marxism literary theories keep up with new ways of understanding the relationship between
economic production, literature, and cultural production. The analysis of the society and history
has made a great impact on how Marxists developed their literary theory and criticism.

Marxist Literature

Marxist literature depicts the fight between the oppressors and the oppressed, and the main
characters in these works are often women, the poor, or slaves. These works of literature shed
light on social injustice, and they will surely continue to exist and influence people.

FEMINISM

Feminist Criticism (1960s-present) is concerned with "the ways in which literature (and other
cultural productions) reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological
oppression of women" (Tyson 83).

Feminism is a term used for the variety of beliefs, movements, and ideas regarding a common
goal, which is to define and achieve equal rights for women in terms of personal, political,
cultural, economic, and social concerns.

Feminism is a social and political movement. Feminism is about changing the way that people
see male and female rights (mainly female), and campaigning for equal ones. Feminism is
advocating for women's rights and asking for equal rights for no matter a person's gender.
Somebody who follows feminism is called a feminist.

Feminist Literature

Feminist literature is fiction or nonfiction work that supports the goals of feminism. Often, these
works identify the roles of women as being unequal to those of men, especially when it comes
to power, status, and privilege.

Characteristics of Feminist Literature

 Authors of feminist literature portray gender roles as something that may be altered over
time.

 The aim of feminist literature is to alter the perception of society and prompt change that
would lead to gender equality.

 Some works of feminist literature, particularly nonfiction ones, emphasize women's

demand for equality when it comes to their social, economic, and political rights.

 Feminist literature are not written only by women authors. There are also men who write
feminist literature and understand the needs of women.

Direction: Read and study the text given.

Cinderella, a movie released in 1950 and produced by Walt Disney was based on European
folk tale about a young woman who suffered from cruelty of her stepmother and stepsisters,
later on she tried to change her fate in one night. Cinderella had many versions when it comes
to folk tale, the most popular version was written in French by in 1697, under the name
Cendrillon. The popularity of his tale was due to his additions to the story, including the, the
fairy-godmother and the introduction of glass slippers which was adapted by Walt Disney in
animation film.

The story revolved around a girl named Cinderella who lived with her father, stepmother and
stepsisters. At first everything was alright until her father passed away, since then her
stepmother made Cinderella did all the housekeeping jobs. Meanwhile in the castle, the King
wanted his son to immediately get married to a woman, so he held a ball and invited all of the
young women across the kingdom to find a suitable bride for the Prince. Cinderella had no
suitable party dress for a ball, but her friends the mice and the birds helped her. The evil
stepsisters immediately tear apart the dress on the evening night right before the ball, then

and practicing skills #2 the ball, the Prince noticed her and immediately fell in love, but Cinderella had to go back
Preparation: 10 minutes before midnight, because the magic would be gone. The Prince tried to look for Cinderella
after that ball, only by the glass slipper that Cinderella dropped before she left him at the ball.
The Prince then searched the entire kingdom for Cinderella by fitting the slipper to every
maiden in the kingdom. If it fits, then she would be Cinderella. Cinderella’s foot was able to fit
on that slipper, and Prince married her after knowing that she was the Cinderella and they
lived happily ever after. Marx ideologies can help us to analyse this movie, the story behind
this film was a portrait of socio-cultural reference at that time, the aristocrat system that led the
country or kingdom, and how the society see what is the meaning of life.

These points were interesting to analyse, because this film depicted the social ideology and
views at that time. It is most likely that this film had a strong implication of Marx ideology
towards the society, how the class struggle between people to change their current state, how
people are being classed, and how the false consciousness works. In this essay the writer
would analyse those aspects and how the movie depicted Marx ideologies. It was a Disney
animated film and one of the most recognizable film of all time. Many generations have seen
this film and with Marxist criticism towards the movie we can understand more about the
movie, it made Cinderella more than just a fairy tale. I hope that we could appreciate and see
what lies beneath the story of this phenomenal fairy tale.

My Father Goes to Court

By: Carlos Bulosan

When I was four, I lived with my father and brothers and sisters in a small town on the island of
Luzon. Father’s farm had been destroyed by one of our sudden Philippine floods, so several
years afterwards we all lived in the town. We had as a next-door neighbor a very rich man,
whose sons and daughters seldom came out of the house. While we boys and girls played and
sang in the sun, his children stayed inside and kept the windows closed. His house was so tall
that his children could look in the window of our house ad watched us played,or slept, or
ate, when there was any food in the house to eat. Now, this rich man’s servants were always
frying and cooking something good, and the aroma of the food was wafted down to us from the

windows of the big house. We hung about and took all the wonderful smells of the food into
our beings. Some days the rich man appeared at a window and glowered down at us. He
looked at us one by one, as though he were condemning us.As time went on, the rich man’s
children became thin and anemic, while we grew even more robust and full of life. The rich
man started to cough at night. His wife began coughing too. Then the children started to
cough. One day the rich man appeared at a window and stood there along time. He looked at
my sisters, then at my brothers. He banged down the window and ran through his house,
shutting all the windows. From that day on, the windows of our neighbor’s house were always
closed. We could still hear the servants cooking in the kitchen, and no matter how tight
the windows were shut, the aroma of the food came to us in the wind and drifted gratuitously
into our house. One morning a policeman from the presidencia came to our house with a
sealed paper. The rich man had filed a complaint against us for stealing the spirit of his wealth
and food.

On the day of the trial, we were the first to arrive. The rich man arrived with his young lawyer.
Spectators came in and almost filled the chairs. The judge entered the room and sat on
a highchair. We stood in a hurry and then sat down again. After the courtroom preliminaries,
the judge looked at Father, asked if he had a lawyer to which Father replied that he didn’t need

any.

The rich man’s lawyer jumped up and pointed his finger at Father and started to ask him
questions. After being somehow proven guilty by the lawyer, Father agreed to pay for our
committed crime. He took my straw hat and began filling it up with centavo pieces that he took
out of his pockets. Mother added a fistful of silver coins; my brothers threw in their small
change. The hat was almost full of coins.He walked to the room across the hall, shook the hat;
the sweet tinkle of the coins carried beautifully in the courtroom. Father came back,
stood before the complainant, and asked him if he heard the sound - the spirit of the money.
When the rich man answered yes, Father said, “Then you're paid.”

The rich man opened his mouth to speak and fell to the floor without a sound. The lawyer
rushed to his aid. The judge pounded his gavel.“Case dismissed,” he said.
