1. In civil law, a case begins when a complaint is lodged by a party, which may be an individual, an
organization, company or company, against another party or vice versa, in criminal law, the
case is filed by the government, usually referred to as the state and represented by the
prosecutor, against the accused.
3. Crimes in general had to be proved "beyond reasonable doubt," whereas civil cases were proved
by lower standards of evidence such as "greater evidence "(which basically meant that it was
more likely than not that something happened in a particular way).
4. Misdemeanors are less serious than felonies and less severe penalties. Normally, such penalties
may include less than a year in prison, community service, fines, rehabilitation and/or trials.
Crime, on the other hand, was accompanied by at least a year (and sometimes decades or even
a lifetime) in prison.
