Objective:

After successful completion of this article session the participant will have improved
knowledge of the drawworks inspection and overhauling.

Dismantling & Inspection Procedures:

Remove all guards and inspection covers.

Remove all air, water and lubrication piping and inspect condition.

Remove all copper grease piping.

Remove all chains and inspect condition.

Remove drillers console, disassemble and inspect all control valves.

Remove foot throttle control valve, disassemble and inspect condition.

Remove oil lube pump, disassemble and inspect condition.

Disassemble rope rollers and inspect condition.

Remove make-up and breakout catheads, disassemble for inspection.

Remove transmission shifter, disassemble and inspect condition.

Remove transmission shifter cylinder, disassemble and inspect condition.

Remove braking system and brake bands, disassemble and inspect condition.

Remove sand reel brake system and brake bands, disassemble and inspect condition.

Remove drum-shaft, disassemble clutches and bearings for inspection.

Remove transmission output shaft, disassemble for inspection of bearings.

Remove transmission input shaft, disassemble for inspection of bearings.

Remove low drum drive shaft, disassemble for inspection of bearings.

Remove sand reel / cat-shaft, disassemble for inspection.

Sand blast drawworks frame, guards and braking system.

Inspect drawworks frame for any corrosion to main structural members

Metal Particle Inspection should be carried out on all disassembled shafts, braking system
and all load bearing areas in accordance with ASTM E-709.

Prepare inspection and MPI reports, repair recommendations, digital photographs of

disassembly and assembly, parts list to expedite the COC.

Assembling Procedures:

Drawworks shall be assembled installing new bearings, seals, gaskets and worn parts as the
parts list prepared by API inspector and Project Engineer-Mechanical.

Install air, water and lubrication pipe works.

Reassemble drum-shaft, install into drawworks frame and add shims as required for
alignment.

Reassemble transmission output shaft, install into drawworks frame and add shim as required
for alignment.

Reassemble transmission input shaft, install into drawworks frame and add shims as required
for alignment.

Reassemble the low drum drive shaft, install into drawworks frame and add shims as required
for alignment.

Reassemble the sand reel / catshaft, install into drawworks frame and add shim as required
for alignment.

Reassemble air and water spears, install into drawworks.

Reassemble transmission shifter cylinder, install into drawworks.

Reassemble transmission shifter assemblies install into drawworks frame.

Reassemble oil lube pump and install into drawworks.

Install chains into drawworks, check for correct tension.

Reassemble braking system, install onto drawworks and add shims as required for proper
operation.

Reassemble brake bands, install onto drumshaft and adjust to correct working position.

Reassemble make-up and breakout catheads and test operation, install onto catshaft.

Reassemble drillers console with overhauled control valves, install and terminate connections
on drawworks.

Reassemble foot throttle control valve, install and terminate connections on drawworks.

Reassemble rope rollers, install onto drawworks.

Installed new motors A and B onto drawworks and align with input shaft.

Install new/refurbished Elmagco brake and align with drum shaft.

Replace grease lubrication piping where required.

Clean and apply final top coat of paint.

Prepare QA-QC packages to expedite the COC.
