MOCK ROLE PLAY

In order to prepare for your evaluation, here is a role-play training scenario.

Situation: On February 27th, 2023, your English teacher at the University of Rennes was found
dead in their office, on campus Beaulieu and the police have launched an investigation. Here is a
newspaper clipping which sums up what happened:

English Teacher Found Murdered at Rennes University

An English teacher was found dead in their office at Rennes University on Monday afternoon. The victim,
identified as Mr/Mrs English Teacher, had been stabbed multiple times, according to the police.

Mrs/Mr…………. had been working at the university for the past five years. He/She was known for her/his
enthusiasm for teaching and had a reputation for being a dedicated teacher.

The police have launched an investigation into the murder and are currently looking for any leads that
might help them identify the perpetrator. According to the preliminary investigation, there were no signs
of forced entry into the office, and it is believed that the perpetrator may have been someone known to
the victim.

$The players assume the roles of various individuals with different connections to the university,
and they must work together to solve the murder mystery. 15 – 20 min

Gameplay: The players must debate the reasons for the crime and try to find the culprit.
They must interview suspects, and piece together the evidence to figure out who had a
motive for killing the English teacher.

The detective can guide the investigation, but each player will have their own unique insights and
information that they can bring to the table. (Your task is to prepare your part INDIVIDUALLY: be
able to answer the detective’s and other witnesses’/suspects’ questions – NO rehearsal).

The game can end with the players accusing a suspect and presenting their evidence to the
police, or with the revelation of a shocking twist that changes everything.

ëRole 1: The Detective


You are a seasoned detective from the Rennes Police Department, assigned to investigate the
murder of the English teacher at the University of Rennes. You have a reputation for being a no-
nonsense investigator who always gets their man (or woman).
" You will have to exchange with the CSI officer, prepare your questions…etc

ëRole 2: The Colleague


You are a fellow English teacher at the University of Rennes and are devastated by their murder.
You want to help the police solve the case, but you also have your own suspicions about who
might be responsible.

ëRole 3: The Student


You are a maths/IE student the University of Rennes. You didn't know the victim very well, but you
have heard rumors about their personal life that make you wonder if they had enemies.

ëRole 4: The Janitor
You are a janitor at the University of Rennes. You were the one who discovered the victim's body
in their office. You didn't see anyone else around at the time, but you have been around the
university long enough to know who might have had a motive for killing the English teacher.

ëRole 5: The BFF


You are the victim’s best friend. You were devastated by their murder and are determined to find
out who did it. You know your friend had some enemies at the university, but you also suspect that
there might be more to the story.

ëRole 6: CSI officer


You are an experienced crime scene investigator; forensics is your specialty! You have been
working alongside the detective for some years now. You have uncovered evidence that may be
crucial to solving this murder.

ëRole 7: The Head of the English Department


You are under a lot of pressure to solve the case quickly, as the university's reputation is on the
line. You have your own suspicions about who might be responsible, but you also want to make
sure that justice is served.

You have worked with the detective for 5 months. You are still new to this, so you tend to ask
many questions. Your mission will be to help the detective solve this case. You have been able to
interview different people on campus before this meeting.
