Names of Tenses and Their Forms

 Present Simple
Form: “s” or “es” for 3rd person singular
She says – he does – she teaches -

 Present Continuous or Progressive


Form auxiliary verb “to be” in present simple + present participle
am / is / are + playing / working / buying etc.

 Present Perfect Simple


Form: auxiliary verb “to have” in present simple + past participle
has / have + played / worked / bought etc.

 Present Perfect Continuous or Progressive


Form: auxiliary verb “to have” + past participle of “to be” + present participle
have / has + been + playing / working / buying etc.

 Past Simple
Form: regular verbs add ed or d to the inf form – irregular verbs have different forms

 Past Continuous or Progressive


Form: auxiliary verb “to be” in past simple + present participle
was / were + playing / working / buying etc.

 Past Perfect Simple


Form: auxiliary verb “to have” in past simple + past participle
had + played / worked / bought etc.
 Past Perfect Continuous or Progressive
Form: aux. verb “to have” in past simple + past part. “to be” + present participle
had + been + played / worked / buying

 Future simple
Form: modal “will” + bare infinitive
will + play / work / buy etc.

 Future Continuous or Progressive


Form: modal “will” + bare infinitive of “be” + present participle
will + be + playing / working / buying

 Future Perfect
Form: modal “will” + auxiliary “have” in bare inf. form + past participle
will + have + finished / bought / played etc.

 Going to Future
Form: auxiliary verb “to be” in present simple + present part of verb “go” + To inf verb

am / is /are + going + to finish / to buy etc
