Clutter. Even the word feels heavy when you say it. We’ve become
consumed by stuff and so inundated by things that we almost have
nowhere to turn. In the United States alone, there are more than
2.63 billion square feet of self-storage space. That’s more than three
times the size of the island of Manhattan! And the occupancy rate of
these facilities is 90 percent.
Nearly 1 in 10 U.S. households rents a storage unit, even though
65 percent of those households have a garage.1 That’s not
surprising, because the average U.S. household contains 300,000
things!2 While the United States leads the pack in the amount of
storage space rented, Canada and Australia are big fans too.
As we buy more and more, our homes, garages, attics, cars, and
lives are bursting at the seams.
Think of some things—or that one big thing—you’d love to do. I’ll
bet the next things that come to mind are all the reasons you can’t
possibly do those things: lack of time, a tight budget, too many
commitments, or no related skills. All of that? Clutter.
Clearing clutter is about getting rid of anything that is no longer a
fit for your life. It is about creating space for true fulfillment and joy
and welcoming in the universal abundance that is waiting for you.
Some of your clutter has accumulated because of ineffective
systems, but it all has an emotional component. When you explore
what that component is, you reveal incredible insights into why you
aren’t accomplishing your goals and how you’re getting in your own
way over and over again.
Maybe you’d like to be in a loving romantic relationship, but you
can’t seem to find someone who fits the bill. What are your current
relationships with friends and family like? Could they use some
boundaries? If so, those dynamics are likely clogging up your
relationship center and leaving no room for someone new.
Are you holding on to things from past relationships that cause
you grief? That could be getting in the way.
Do you feel undeserving of love? This blocking belief might be the
culprit.
That’s all clutter.
Do you stress about money? Clutter in the form of blocking beliefs
around money, a disorganized bill-paying system, or resentment of
those who have more than you could very well be keeping the
money away.
Clutter has a lot to tell you about what’s off-balance in your life.
It’s like a flashing arrow pointing to the areas that need attention.
Identify an aspect of your life that isn’t going the way you’d like, and
there will be corresponding clutter.
Realizing that there’s a lot more clutter in your life than just
physical items may seem like it complicates matters, but in fact it
simplifies things. When you recognize that your clutter holds some
life-changing clues, dealing with it becomes a treasure hunt. Rather
than resisting the piles (physical and emotional) and hoping they’ll
magically go away, you can think about what those piles might be
trying to tell you.
As we dive deep into the message in the mess, here are some
questions to think about:
Counters/Tabletops
Clutter that you see often is a consistent energy vampire, but the
solution isn’t to tuck the items away in a drawer. The clutter that
ends up on a tabletop is often the kind that an organizational system
can handle effectively. For example, piles of mail can be eradicated
by creating a routine of sorting it when you pick it up, discarding
what you don’t need and finding a home for what you do. Overtly
visible clutter is a loud-and-clear message that something needs
your attention. By ignoring it, you send yourself the message that
you’re not a priority.
Desk/Office
Car
Clutter in the car is often the first sign of feeling overwhelmed. Are
you frantically rushing from one thing to the next? Is your calendar
too full? The clutter in your car could be your soul asking you for
some downtime.
Garage
Attic
The attic, or clutter’s graveyard, as I like to call it, can contain the
most ties to the past, holding you back from moving forward. Maybe
you’re keeping heirlooms out of guilt, or your child’s baby clothes in
hope of clinging to those precious years. Much of what is in your
attic is likely getting in the way of your advancing on your soul’s
journey.
