Adapted from The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Mary walked around the flower garden and the fruit trees. Then she went to her own special path and
decided to run from one end to the other. It was a long path and she ran slowly, but she soon got hot and
tired. She stopped with a laugh – and then, suddenly, she saw a little bird. It was the robin! As Mary went
ni

towards him she felt the heavy key in her pocket.

5 ‘Yesterday you showed me where the key was,’ she said.‘Today you should show me the door.’
The robin flew from his branch to the top of the wall. Then he opened his mouth and sang a loud, lovely
U

song.
A breath of wind came down the path. It was strong enough to move the long branches of *ivy hanging from
the wall. Mary jumped forward. For a moment she could see something under the leaves, something unusual.
ge

10 She began to push the ivy to one side. It hung in a long curtain over the wall, and under it Mary could see
wood and metal. Her heart began to jump with excitement. The robin kept singing, as if he was excited too.
It was a door which had been closed for many years. Mary put her hand in her pocket and took out the key.
id

She put it in the keyhole. She had to use two hands to turn it – but yes, it turned.
And then she took a long breath. She looked behind her up the long path to see if anyone was coming. No
15 one was there. She held back the curtain of ivy and pushed the door, which opened slowly … slowly. Then she
br

slipped through the opening and shut the door behind her. She stood with her back against it, looking around
her in amazement.
She was standing inside the secret garden.

Adapted from The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
ni

It was nearly midnight when I left my mother’s house. There was a full
moon and I decided to walk home across the hills. It was a long way,
but I could get back to London in the cool air of the new morning.
U

I followed little paths, enjoying the lovely quietness of the night.

5 During this first part of my walk, my eyes were open to the beauty
of the view and I was not thinking much about anything. But when I
joined the main road, there was less to see. I began to think about my
ge

new job at Limmeridge House and soon my mind was busy with these
thoughts.
10 I came to a place where four roads met and took the direction
towards London. I was walking quietly along this road when suddenly
id

every drop of blood in my body froze. I felt the touch of a hand placed
lightly on my shoulder from behind me.
I turned quickly and my fingers closed around the stick I was carrying.
br

15 There, all alone in the middle of the wide bright road, stood the figure
of a woman. She was dressed from head to foot in white and her eyes
looked into mine. Her hand was pointing in the direction of the city.
am

I was too amazed to ask what she wanted. The woman spoke first.
‘Is that the road to London?’ she said.
20 The moonlight showed me a pale young face and large, serious eyes.
She held a small bag in her hand and her clothing – all white – did not
look expensive. It was then nearly one o’clock. I could not begin to
C

guess who she was and why she was out alone on the road an hour
after midnight.
25 ‘Did you hear me?’ she said quietly. ‘I asked if that is the way to
London.’

ge

Covent Garden is a popular place for tourists. It’s

got an interesting history. It was the first public
square in London. The architect, Inigo Jones, took
the idea from Italian cities, and called it the Piazza.
id

In the 1750s a market started there. It sold fruit

and vegetables to shops all over the city. In 1830
there was one market building, but a century later
there were more and more, because the market
br

was big and important. There were also theatres,

cafés and restaurants in the area.
In 1973 the market moved to an area of London
with good transport and car parks. Planners
am

wanted to build a conference centre, hotels and

roads in Covent Garden, but the people of London
wanted the beautiful square and historic buildings
to stay. In the end, Londoners got what they
wanted.
C

Now the first market building is an unusual

shopping centre. It’s got a lot of small shops.
They sell artistic things – it’s great for tourists!
There are still theatres, including the Royal Opera
House, and there’s a Theatre Museum and a
Transport Museum.
In the Piazza there are street musicians and circus
performers. It’s a wonderful place to visit when
you come to London!

Hi Stefan,

s
I’m in a place called Osseja, a village in the

so there’s a lot to do. There are tennis courts,
a skate park and there’s also a swimming pool.
And there are a lot of mountains too! Yesterday

we went for a long bike ride. It took four hours
and I was tired when we got home. The village
has also got a cinema (but all the films are in

It’s jazz really, but there are pop groups for young
people too.
