Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political
ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for
India's independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights
and freedom across the world.
Dadabhai Naoroji is regarded as one of the most important Indians during the
birth of the nascent independence movement. In his writings, he came to the
conclusion that the exertion of foreign rule over India was not favourable for the
nation, and that independence (or at the very least, responsible government)
would be the better path for India.
Dayanand Saraswati, was an Hindu philosopher, social leader and founder of the
Arya Samaj, a reform movement of Hinduism. His book Satyarth Prakash has
remained one of the influential text on the philosophy of the Vedas and
clarifications of various ideas and duties of human beings.
Gopal Krishna Gokhale CIE was an Indian political leader and a social reformer
during the Indian independence movement and political mentor of Indian freedom
fighter Mahatma Gandhi. Gokhale was a senior leader of the Indian National
Congress and the founder of the Servants of India Society.
Ranade was a progressive social activist whose activities were deeply influenced
by western culture and the colonial state. His activities ranged from religious
reform to public education and reform within the Indian family. In every area, he
was prone to see little virtue in Indian customs and traditions and to strive for
reforming the subject into the mould of what prevailed in the west.
Rao Bahadur Gopal Hari Deshmukh also known as Lokhitwadi was an Indian
activist, thinker, social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. His original
surname was Shidhaye. Because of 'Vatan' that the family had received, the
family was later called Deshmukh.
