GREEN BUILDINGS
A green or sustainable building is a building that, because of its construction and features, can
maintain or improve the quality of life of the environment in which it is located.
Green buildings are sustainable buildings that minimise energy and water consumption and are a
key part of sustainable urban development that seeks to combat climate change.
A green building is energy-efficient, selfsustaining, incorporates the ecology, healthy for its
occupants and the area. Th Phoenix Towers, for example, are entirely self-powered. The solar energy
is collected by photovoltaic cladding applied to the exterior of these buildings—not just on the top, but
over much of the entire building. The wind power is supplied by turbines placed throughout their
structure.
NET-ZERO BUILDINGS
A net-zero building is a building with zero or no net energy consumption and carbon emissions, no
emissions of greenhouse gases. When a building can fulfill all of its power needs through the use of
renewable energy, it is considered a net-zero energy building. Net-zero buildings save money and
resources, because the amount of energy renewed over time becomes sufficient to meet the building’s
energy demand. In a net-zero building, all the energy that is needed is produced through a sustainable
design. This can be achieved with the use of solar power, wind power, and careful energy rationing.
By installing an updated mechanical ventilation system, homes can decrease their air
change rate, creating less variation in temperatures.
