Bullying in the workplace. Zero tolerance

Everyone has right to come to work without being judged, belittled and to be singled
out.

Your Role as a carer – discussion

Dementia care
WEIGHT LOSS AND ACCESS TO SNACKS AND FLUIDS

Approaches

Triggers

Behaviour

Kindness takes no time.

Examples of abuse

Sit down – would you like to sit here

You can’t as we are short staffed – would you mind if we rearranged or manage the
time.

Taking money or gifts without going through the appropriate procedure and Pearl care
policy. nothing should be accepted from a resident capacity or lacing capacity without
the Manager knowing and if possible, checking with the family or LPA

Judgemental documentation

Taking anything from the care home without permission?

Security cameras which are being installed and this saddens me.

Resident’s snacks in staffs hand more than residents and hidden?

Covid restrictions / Infection control

How many of you read the Government public guidance?

How does covid or any virus travel

Hands – the worst – touch, touching yourself ie rubbing your face. touching something
or somebody, /gloves are single use only
Face – coughing, snotting , sneezing , talking , singing and smoking - Masks reduce
the transmission

Space – space reduces the risk, ensure chairs are apart, not over crowded lounges ,
areas free to walk and staff are disinfecting areas after food , drink and activities .

Visitors, anyone coming into the care home, us we are the biggest risk of bringing
germs and viruss into the care home – are the area disinfected before and after a
quick wipe down with disinfectant.

Covid / infection/viruses
Fist sign is a high temperature, everyone coming into the care home must have a
temperature check this could prevent anyone bringing an infection in , very simple
very affective , staff must take their temps and they are to be documented this is
evidence for the inspectors , all residents must have their temps taking twice a day ,
N/S at 5am /6am and day staff after lunch when doing hands and faces and cleaning
down .

Isolate the infection – report to your senior, leave the residents in their room till a
clear plan of action in place this could be their room if they feel unwell, this could be
an allocated area of the care home a spare room or lounge set up for residents with
infection.

Test the residents for covid

Rule out other infections Urine, chest or an unseen infection.

Break the chain

Barrier care

Single use PPE

Disinfect all areas

If you feel unwell?

If unwell you use the sickness procedure

If unwell but feel ok to work – you wear PPE so you do not pass it on to anyone else,
residents, staff or visitors

If a visitor is feeling unwell or high temp, they are refused entry.

Visits are only in personal rooms or the visiting pod – there may be exemptions ie if a
residents is very mobile and difficult to keep still then the visitor would be asked to
test and follow all staff guidance to ensure the other resident are safe.

Yes we are fed up with the whole covid but we still have to follow government
guidance and we are the risk as there are no restrictions outside of the care home so
when you come into work you are the treat, as are the visitors and anyone coming in
the door.
When in the care home you are responsible for reducing risks and breaking chains of
transfer.

Professional communication – Visitors and professionals visiting –

correct information or referring to the senior to attend.
Communicating with each other – you are all human and at all times you will treat
each other with respect in the care home, help each other, mentor each other, you
don’t know what is going on in anyone’s lives and your actions can affect people – your
seniors should be the persons who are intervening in any concerns, incidents or
events and this should be a confidential matter not a group intervention.

Working together and when you don’t have to – residents with dementia with go into
fight and flight mode if overcrowded the more people does not make the task easier it
will provoke more behaviour.

Robs comments on CT

If a residents care plan states they only want one carer then don’t go in in twos , one
residents feels talked over and not valued.

Residents who only need 1 carer will feel intimidated with 2 , how do you feel when
you go to the DRs say and they want a trainee joining , its not the most comfortable of
things and that’s a medial example , taking your clothes off and washing is a very
private thing and staff do need to look if they work together for their own personal
preference rather than when needed for equipment or support with behaviours
known ?

Looking after the care home and furnishing, décor and items brought into the care
home

Do you tidy up your kids toys and crafts are they put away neatly to use again ?

If you spill something at home do you leave it over the furniture and walls ?

If you poo or wee on the floor I hope no many of you do but you may have small kids or
animals, do you just leave it ?

All areas of the care home are allocated for cleaning – yes some staff are fed up with
being the ones to do others work but why are you letting them not do it , all cleaning
tasks are documented in files and if you are in any role from Cook , BF , 6pm to 8pm
washing up ,4pm to 6pm ,mealtimes , refreshments ,Domestics ,housekeeping and
night staff it all there in the files . pick up and read the files no excuse its not being
done.

If you see a spillage clean it there and then don’t walk past.

What is your responsibility in the afternoons?

Discuss

Do you just sit in a chair saying no one wants to do anything?

Do you ignore BV starting a strip tease

Do you watch CB leave your lounge and could have run ins

Do the people in your lounges have extra drinks and snack or are they only given the
tea round items

Do you do the activity AD has planned out and has items out ready or they are in the
care home in the activity cupboard?

Do you take the activity to everyone?

Do they get offered the toilet between toileting times?

Do you invite everyone into the lounge to join in or just who’s there?

Who’s job is it to answer bells and respond to resident’s needs?

SHIFT CHANGEOVERS

YOU SHOULD BE READY FOR STARTING WORK AT THE TIMES STATED ON THE ROTA IF YOU
WANT A DRINK, SMOKE OR CHAT YOU COME IN EARLIER, YOU SHOULD BE CHANGED INTO
YOUR UNIFORM AND READY TO START WORK, YOU FINISH WORK AT THE TIMES STATED ON
THE ROTA NOT 10 MINS BEFORE OR SIT DOWN YOU WORK TILL YOU FINISH TIME THIS IS
PAID RESIDENTS TIMES.

It’s the law of employment

A verbal handover should be short and concise as the persons coming on duty should be
reading their handovers as they may have been ok the shift before but there may be other
documentation on something else , they may have had a good night but the evening or day
before they could have had an incident that you need to know about and everyone has access
to care notes on computers of phones .

Problem solving and discussion of concerns and improvement

Positives

Finish up with something positive ways forward and some ideas to bring in some great
stuff for the residents with Breakfast boards with daily specials, making the visiting
pod into more of a café feel so it feels like the resident is going out for something nice
and a afternoon team or coffee with loved ones .
