Elimination
in
Volleyball
(Single Elimination, Double Elimination, Divisional Play, Round Robin)
SINGLE ELIMINATION
It is the easiest to organize and run. These tournaments pair teams up in groups of two,
with the winning team advancing and the losing team eliminated from the competition. The
tournament continues until just two teams remain, and then they square off for the
championship.
Single elimination tournaments work best when the number of teams is a power of two (four,
eight, 16, 32 and so on), but can be accomplished with any number of entries. In cases in which
the number of teams is not a power of two, higher-ranked teams are given first-round byes as a
reward for strong pre-tournament play.
SINGLE ELIMINATION
To determine the number of matches, subtract one from the total number of participants.
For example, if you have 8 participants/teams taking part, simply 8-1=7, therefore there will be 7
total matches to determine a champion.
No. of entries = N
No. of games = N - 1

To determine the number of byes that must take place if there is not a perfect power of 2,
subtract the number of participants/teams from the next higher perfect power of 2
than the given number of participants/teams. For example, if there are 9 participants/teams,
the next higher power on 2 is 16, so 16-9=7, which is the number of byes (7) that are needed in
the first round of a nine participant/team single elimination tournament.
Bye = p² - N
DIVISIONAL PLAY
For larger volleyball tournaments, such as the world championships or the Olympics, qualifying
teams may begin to play in two or more divisions. For the Olympic Games competition, 12 teams
begin the tournament in two groups of six, with each team facing a divisional opponent in the
preliminary round.
The top four teams from each division advance to the quarterfinal round, with the fourth-place
team in Division A matched up against the top team in Division B, the third-place team in Division A
playing the second-place team in Division B and so on.
From that point, each match is a single elimination, meaning the winning team advances while the
losing team is finished. The final two teams play for the championship. The four non-playoff teams
play to decide placings from ninth through 12th.
DOUBLE
ELIMINATION
It is a system in which the competitors are broken into two sets
of brackets, the upper and the lower bracket after the first
round.

The first-round winners proceed into the upper bracket and the
losers proceed into the lower bracket.

The upper bracket is conducted in the same manner as a

Single-Elimination tournament, except that the losers of each
round move into the lower bracket.

Eventually, the last player standing in the upper and lower

bracket face off against each other in the final.

NUMBER OF MATCHES CALCULATION
FORMULA

Number of matches = (N-1) x 2 + 1

~N is the number of players/teams

Example:
6 Teams Double Elimination
(6-1) x 2 + 1 = 11
In double elimination brackets, third
and fourth places are determined
without an additional playoff match
Also, the losing teams can still advance
through the loser's bracket, offering
them a chance to rebound and
potentially win the title.

ADVANTAGES
Scheduling a time for the “IF” match can be
difficult in smaller venues because it may not
need to be played. Fans and spectators may
show up to watch a match that never takes
place.
A double elimination bracket needs almost
double the matches compared to a regular
single elimination bracket with the same number
of players.

DISADVANTAGES
ROUND ROBIN
ELIMINATION
It is a system in which each participant plays every other
participant the same amount of times.

It allows competitors to accumulate points throughout the

tournament based on their performance in each match.

These points are then tallied at the end of the tournament

to determine the overall winner.
NUMBER OF MATCHES CALCULATION
FORMULA

Number of matches = 【N ×(N-1)】÷ 2

Example:
4 Teams Round Robin
【 ( )】
4 × 4-1 ÷2=6
It give competitors more chances to play
before being eliminated, ensuring everyone
faces each other. This offers teams multiple
opportunities to bounce back from a bad
match. They're also useful for scouting
opponents beforehand and allow flexible
scheduling if matches can be played early.

ADVANTAGES
Round robin tournaments can be long,
leading to player fatigue and increased
costs for tournament organizers.

Tiebreakers may decide winners instead of

single-elimination matches, and if a team
drops out, it can affect the rest of the group.

SCORING
SYSTEM
VOLLEYBALL
SCORING
Volleyball scoring is
essential to the game.
It determines which
teams wins and loses.
HOW DOES
SCORING WORK IN
VOLLEYBALL?
HOW DOES SCORING
WORK IN VOLLEYBALL?
Volleyball games are played
to 25 points with the need for
a two point margin victory.
The game consists of five
sets, and teams must win
three out of five sets to win.
The final set is first to 15
points.
SIDEOUT SCORING
A method of scoring in
volleyball where only the
serving team can earn a point
by winning a rally. The
recieving team is looking for
an oppurtunity to win the
service and to begin scoring
points for their team.
Where a point is awarded
to one of the teams after
each rally, regardless of
who is serving.

RALLY SCORING
SCORING
POINTS
SCORING POINTS
Volleyball scoring works by
athletes continuously
attempting to earn points by
putting the ball over the net
in a way that their opponent
can’t return. Scoring is based
on a point system.
POINT ENDS IN VOLLEYBALL
• If the ball hits the floor the point is over

• The ball goes out of bounds as defined by the boundary lines on the
court.

• If the ball is hit into the net without going over to the other side.

• A service fault is made.

• A player touches the net while making making contact with the ball.

•The same player hits the ball twice in a row.

• The ball is hit more than three times on a teams side.

• A point is awarded if any sort of penalty is violation occurs during

the rally.
WHAT DO THE CARDS MEAN IN
VOLLEYBALL?

Referees use the penalty cards to

maintain fairness and sportsmanship on
the court.
THERE ARE COMMONLY TWO
TYPES OF CARDS IN
VOLLEYBALL

Yellow Card
Red Card
WHAT IS A YELLOW
CARD?
A yellow card, or caution card, is a
visual warning from a referee to a
player or a team official.

The referee gives the warning in

response to minor misconduct or bad
behavior that violates the volleyball
game rules or the spirit of fair play.
TYPES OF
MISCONDUCT
Rude conduct in volleyball refers to
actions that are against the principles
of moral standards.

It involves disrespectful or offensive

behavior towards teammates,
opponents, officials, or spectators.

RUDE CONDUCT
OFFENSIVE
CONDUCT
Offensive Conduct takes misconduct a
step further.

It involves insulting words, gestures, or

any action that expresses contempt.

This misconduct goes beyond rudeness

and involves behavior that offends or
insults others involved in the game.
AGGRESSION
Aggression is the most severe form of
misconduct in volleyball.

FIVB describes it as the actual physical

attack or threatening behavior towards
anyone on the court.

Such an aggressive attitude has no place in

the game and significantly risks the sport’s
safety.
LEVEL OF SANCTIONS
IN VOLLEYBALL

Stage 1: Penalty

Stage 2: Expulsion

Stage 3: Disqualification
WHAT IS A RED
CARD?
A red card in volleyball represents the
penalty by a player.

It results in the immediate loss of the point

for the offending team.

It is the initial step of the FIVB sanctions

level.
Typically, a player receives a red card after
accumulating two yellow cards in a match.
WHEN ARE YELLOW AND
RED CARDS SHOWN
TOGETHER?
When the referee shows the yellow and
red cards together in one hand, the
player gets expelled from the set and is
substituted legally.
Referees use this card to recognize players
who voluntarily admit to their faults.

For instance, if a player knows they touched

the net and admits it, the referee shows a
green card.
