Statistics Exercise

1. The number a, b, 8, 5, 7 have mean 6 and variance 2. Find the value of b

and a,

For a set of 20 numbers,∑ x =5500 . For a second set of 30 numbers,

2
2.
∑ x =( 480 ) and ∑ x 2=9600.
Find the mean and standard deviation of the combined set of the 50
numbers.

3. The mean and standard deviation of a set of 100 observations were

worked out as 40 and 5 respectively by a statistician who by mistake
took the value of 50 in place of 40 for one observation. Find the corrected
mean and variance.

4. Given the following data:

70 41 34 55 45 66 73 77 80 30
50 45 72 50 27 70 55 70 85 70
30 50 60 53 40 45 35 55 20 81
25 51 35 62 60 30 45 35 50 89
53 23 28 65 68 50 65 84 35 76

Use class marks of 24.5, 34.5, 44.5, etc to make a frequency of

distribution table showing class limits, class boundaries.

(Show your working)

Use assumed mean equal to class mark of median class find x and s.

5. The following data is a batch of specimen from a laboratory of materials

testing:

Strength more than Number of specimen

0 units 50
10 units 46
20 units 40
30 units 20
40 units 10
50 units 3
a) Construct an ordinary frequency distribution table and use your table
to find the median, mode. Show class mark, class limits/(class
boundaries)

b) If 60% of the materials pass an acceptance test. Find the minimum

strength shown by the specimen.

6. In a machine producing factory, machine components are accepted if

they pass through a gauge of 1.04cm and if they do not pass through a
gauge 0.96 cm. It was discovered after a period of production that 3.5%
and 1.5% of the smallest and largest gauges respectively were rejected.
Find the mean and standard deviation assuming normal distribution and
also find I.R

7. The average life span of a Swiss watch is 5 years with standard deviation
2.5 years. The manufacturer replaces freely all such watches that fail
before the guaranteed period. If the manufacturer is willing to replace
only 4% of the watches that fail. How long should the guarantee period
be set?

8. In a shooting training, the probability of hitting the target is 0.2;

i) Find the probability that the shooter will hit the target at least
once in 8 shots aimed at the targets (0.8322).
ii) Find the minimum number of shots the gun man must fire in
order to be 95% confident that at least one shot has hit the target.
iii) After some practice, the probability of hitting the target improves to
0.64. Find the 95% confidence limits for the number of times the
shooter hits the target in 100 trials (shots).

9. A random sample of size 76 electrical components produced by a certain

manufacturer has resistance r 1 , r 2 , r 3 , r 4 … .. .r 76 ohms where;

∑ r i=740 and ∑ r 2i =8216 calculate the:

i) Un biased estimate for the population variance.

ii) 91.86% confidence interval for the mean resistance of electrical
components produced
