INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we are going to look at the pressurization and air conditioning system. We will
start with an introduction to the subject.
Next, we will look at which parts of the aircraft are pressurized and how the aircraft is divided
into zones, then we will look at some of the functions of the air conditioning system.
This segment contains an overview of an air conditioning system.
Here you can test your knowledge with some exercise questions.
PAGE 1
EXERCISE 2
This _______________ some problems _______________ humans are not able to live in this
environment _______________ help.
PAGE 2
EXERCISE 4
The air pressure is so low that _______________ _______________ not sufficient oxygen for
human survival. _______________, the crew and passengers must be protected
_______________ freezing and _______________.

EXERCISE 8
_______________ imagine an aircraft _______________ on the ground on a hot and sunny day
with no air conditioning. _______________ would be uncomfortable and potentially
life--threatening for passengers _______________ _______________. Also, the equipment on
the aircraft would be in danger of overheating.
_______________, as you have seen, the air conditioning system _______________ and
_______________ the cabin.

EXERCISE 11
In summary, we _______________ say the air conditioning system cools and heats the air. It also
_______________ the cabin and _______________ the aircraft at high flight altitudes.
In the next segment we will _______________ _______________ pressurization and aircraft
_______________.

Now let us look more closely at the air conditioning system. Some parts of the aircraft are
pressurized and some parts are unpressurized.
Do this task now:

EXERCISE 15
There are areas in the fuselage that are not pressurized and _______________ are separated by
pressure bulkheads. If you _______________ more information on this _______________ you
can look at unit 51 on Structures.
Areas _______________ are not pressurized are the landing gear bays, the _______________
and the tail cone.

EXERCISE 22
The aircraft is divided into _______________ zones so that the cabin areas can be
_______________ individually.
On the _______________ _______________ there is zone U/D and the cockpit is zone F/D.
PAGE 12
EXERCISE 24
For instance, on the Airbus A320 there are _______________ 3 zones: the cockpit, the
_______________ zone and the aft zone.
PAGE 13
EXERCISE 26
It must make sure that the air is _______________, clean, at a comfortable temperature, at the
correct _______________ and at the correct _______________.
PAGE 14
EXERCISE 28
Let’s look at _______________ of these 5 characteristics in turn, the first one we will consider is
_______________.
These regulations are _______________ in the FAR and JAR which determines the basic
_______________ for aircraft _______________.
The regulations _______________ that, on average, an acceptable limit of fresh air to be supplied
is _______________ m3 per minute per person. This is about _______________ kg per minute
at sea level.

EXERCISE 30
The _______________, therefore, make it necessary that the _______________ of the cabin air
be exchanged every 3 to 5 _______________, depending on the number of _______________ in
the aircraft. This means, for example, that a B747, which has a cabin volume of _______________
800m3 and 500 passenger seats, _______________ a minimum 160m3 of air in one minute.
Next, we find _______________ how air is _______________ clean on board.
PAGE 16
EXERCISE 32
Now let’s look at cleanliness. The air must be clean. It must be free of all _______________ or
_______________ gases or vapors. Air _______________ are fitted to keep the air clean. And
at high altitudes for extra protection, ozone _______________ are built in.
Now, let’s _______________ temperature on board. Touch the temperature symbol.

Before we go on to find out about pressurization, see if you can answer this question.
What do the regulations say is an acceptable limit of fresh air to be supplied per minute to each
person?

EXERCISE 42
Here you see the _______________ layout of the air conditioning system.
_______________ the pack valve to look more _______________ at the air conditioning system.
PAGE 22
EXERCISE 44
The air is _______________ by two or more identical _______________. Basic temperature and
humidity regulation are _______________ _______________ in this area of the system. What do
you think _______________ after the hot air valve?
PAGE 23
EXERCISE 46
The air conditioning system then _______________ cooled air with hot air to give the desired
temperature in the _______________ compartments.
The air conditioning system also _______________ the necessary cooling of panels, batteries and
electronic racks by _______________ them with air.

EXERCISE 50
You have learnt that the air conditioning system is supplied by the pneumatic system and that it
starts at the pack valve. You know the air conditioning system regulates, distributes, cools and
pressurizes.
Can you answer this question?
Look at the boxes on the graphic and try to work out which of the following is in the correct
order.
PAGE 26
EXERCISE 51
So, in summary, the air conditioning system starts at the pack valve. The air is cooled and
temperature--regulated.
TASK : Write the last two stages in the air conditioning system.

EXERCISE 53 Answer the following question.
The cabin of an aircraft is usually divided into several zones. What is the reason for this?

The air conditioning system must fulfil physical air requirements. What are they?
