This lesson describes why an ice and rain protection system is needed on aircraft and how ice is
detected during flight.
In the first segment we introduce you to the different ice and rain protection systems of modern jet
aircraft.
In this segment you learn about the need for a wing anti--ice system because of the negative effects
of ice on the aerodynamics of the aircraft.
Here, you look at the engine anti--ice system which prevents the negative effects of ice on engine
operation.
Lufthansa LAN Technical Training
Here, we describe what is necessary on the ground when ice and snow is on the aircraft.
At the end, you can check your knowledge with some questions.

EXERCISE 2
In this unit we _______________ show you how modern jet aircraft are _______________ against
the negative effects of _______________ and rain.
To _______________ this problem we have two systems in the aircraft: A windshield wiper for each
pilot and a rain _______________ system which we describe in lesson _______________.
PAGE 2
EXERCISE 4
When the aircraft _______________ in icing conditions, you can imagine _______________ more
problems are possible.
The aerodynamic quality of the aircraft is reduced and its _______________ increases.
The engines can also get problems and the ice can _______________ the probes for the air data
system.
In addition ice on the _______________ will decrease the visibility _______________ than rain.

From your knowledge of aerodynamics you should now be able to answer this question:
Which of the following statements is correct about the negative effect of clear ice on the
aircraft?
PAGE 6
EXERCISE 11
_______________ the temperature of the droplets is _______________ minus 10°C, mainly rime
ice is produced on the surface.
_______________, the ice build up begins on the leading edge of the surface where the droplets
hit the _______________.
But these very _______________ droplets freeze _______________ and build up a rime ice layer
on the leading edge _______________.
When you fly at _______________ speed in this condition, the rime ice layer forms a
_______________ double horn _______________.

EXERCISE 14
Both types of ice can _______________ _______________ together and therefore produce a
combination of all _______________ effects.
Decrease of lift, increase of _______________ and increase of drag.
PAGE 9
EXERCISE 16
You have seen that the effect of ice on the aircraft is _______________ negative and can even
_______________ dangerous. It must therefore _______________ prevented by either not flying
in _______________ conditions or by the use of an anti ice system.
In jet aircraft, the anti ice system _______________ the wing leading edge _______________ the
ice build up begins. _______________ uses warm air _______________ the engines and is
therefore _______________ the thermal wing anti ice system.

EXERCISE 18
_____ _______________ _____ the negative effect on aerodynamics and a higher weight, the
engines can also _______________ problems when _______________ _______________ an
ice build up.
TASK : Click on the area of the engine where ice build up can happen.

_______________ prevent ice build _______________ _______________ the engine inlet, all
jet engines have _______________ thermal anti ice system, you will also learn _______________
this _______________ lesson 2.
If _______________ aircraft has _______________ center engine as shown here, you must make
sure that ice pieces _______________ the fuselage do not hit the engine.
Usually the antennas get this ice build _______________ and therefore they are also heated
_______________ warm air.
_______________ the next segment you learn something else _______________ ice and snow.
PAGE 13
EXERCISE 24
The two thermal anti ice systems are very _______________ at _______________ ice build up
during flight.
_______________ what do you think happens when snow or ice _______________ on the aircraft
when _______________ is on the ground, _______________ instance _______________ night?
Which of the followint statements is correct when ice or snow covers the aircraft on the ground?

EXERCISE 26
Anti ice systems prevent ice build up on _______________ aircraft areas during flight. You
_______________ use them to de--ice an aircraft which has ice _______________ on it.
You must perform the de--icing _______________ before takeoff with a de--icing fluid.
_______________ follow company _______________.
_______________ an aircraft to fly only, when it is _______________ of ice and snow.
You will learn this during the _______________ training.
In the next segment we show you _______________ ice is detected during flight.

EXERCISE 28
_______________ flight, the thermal anti--ice systems can only do _______________ task when
they are switched _______________ before any ice builds up.
On the other _______________, it is not permitted to _______________ the systems on
_______________ of the time. This is because _______________ hot air from the engines
_______________ their performance and economy.
This _______________ that the pilot must get _______________ information when the aircraft
_______________ into icing conditions. This is the _______________ of an ice detector.

_______________ you see an ice detector of _______________ airbus aircraft. You find it
_______________ the two windscreens where it is in _______________ of both pilots.
When the pilots _______________ ice on this detector, then, there is _______________ ice on
