Assignment: Make a recycling bin out of recycling material

Our recycling bin comprises two 5-gallon water bottles, cardboard, and bottle caps.
The first bottle’s top was removed with scissors and a heated knife. We then removed the top
and bottom of the second bottle, which we placed on top of the first and secured with tape on
the inside and outside of the bottles. We evened out the top bottle edges so it wouldn’t be too
sharp. We made the lid out of cardboard and decorated it with bottle caps. We spray-painted the
bin blue and white, painted the recycling logo, and topped it with its lid.

We chose the 5-gallon bottles for the base, their thick plastic material made it firm and a
more suitable fit for the bin. We didn’t use cardboard as a base in case someone would throw a
bottle with liquid inside which could damage the bin. Instead, we used cardboard for the lid, it
was easy and simple to make it out of cardboard. We ended up adding bottle caps on top of the
lid as decoration. We used clear tape to connect the two bottles, and although hot glue was our
first option, we decided on tape when we realized the tape was cheaper.
