Machining Through Milling Process
Ref:________________ Level: UG Mode: Practical

Time: 03 Hours Course: ME-105 (Basic Workshop Practice) Group: 05

TITLE:-
Machining of a Nylon Plate through Milling Process.

Introduction:-
It is a machining operation in which the work piece is stationary and comes across a rotating tool. Such
arrangement gives more flexibility in terms of machining different forms and surfaces. Even flat surfaces can be generated
which is not possible with machining on lathe machine in turning. Milling operation is a process which is carry out in three
axis.

Requirements:-
Following Items are required to perform the Practical.

a. Milling machine with basic milling functions.

b. End Mill cutters of 08 mm diameter and 110mm length
c. Form mill cutter 180ᵒ.
d. Vernier caliper and steel rule.
e. Machine vice.
f. Work Piece of Nylon (50 x 145 x 10) mm in making.

Operations:-
Following operation will be performed in making the required job.

a. Surface Milling (up-milling/down milling)

b. Side Milling
c. Marking
d. Slotting
e. Pocket Milling
f. Drilling

Procedure:-
Following procedure is to be followed sequentially to complete the job.

a. Issuance of Nylon Plate with 10 mm thickness.

b. Mont the plate on machine vice vertically.
c. Surface milling: Machining on the longer side of the plate using end mill cutter 8 mm diameter.
d. Mark the opposite side as per given dimension and the machining the plate as done at “c”.
e. Side Milling: Clamp the nylon plate on machine vice horizontally & perform side milling operation on both side
of plate.
f. Face Milling: Now replace the end mill cutter with face mill cutter for reduction of the thickness up to required
dimension.
g. Marking: Carryout marking on plate for Slotting, Pocket milling & Drilling as per drawing.
h. Slotting: Align the end mill cutter (8mm) accordingly to the marking on the plate with a depth of 3 mm and
length 80mm.
i. Pocket Milling: Align the end mill cutter (8 mm diameter) on the position of pocket with a depth of 3mm and
complete the pocket as per given size.
j. Drilling: Drill the “Through Holes” (3mm) on each corner of plate as per drawing.

Safety Precautions
a. Always pay attention to work.
b. Do not wear lose dress.
c. Do not leave unattended an operating machine.
d. Do not place tools, instruments etc on work table.
e. Always mark job before machining.
f. Stop cutter before inspecting the job.
g. Do not operate any machine part whose function is not known.
h. Obey the instruction of Instructor.
i. Wear googles while working on milling machine.
