Executive Summary

The electrical and electronics (E&E) sector in Bangladesh is considered underdeveloped due to limited
technical knowledge and production capacity. As the population grows and standards of living improve,
there is an increasing demand for consumer electronics products, leading to significant imports to meet
this demand, with China being the largest supplier. Additionally, foreign brands hold a significant market
share in Bangladesh's E&E industry.

The study conducted an analysis of the external and internal environment of the E&E industry in
Bangladesh, and how Walton, being the world's largest professional producer of electrical and electronic
products, addresses these challenges and competes in the market. Walton has gained a reputation for its
capacity to produce high-quality electrical and electronic items with competitive pricing, design, and
innovation. They have also incorporated artificial intelligence and automation in their manufacturing
process to enhance quality and efficiency.

The report incorporates my internship experience at Walton, where I was able to identify how their HR
department operates based on my firsthand experience. Besides I also differentiate Walton’s HR activities
with the theories.

through various channels such as Walton Plaza, Walton E-Plaza, Exclusive Distributors, Dealers, Sub-

Manufacturer), and International Business Unit. This distribution method employed by Walton is not only
cost-effective but also efficient. The company's extensive distribution network is a significant advantage,
with multiple outlets and channels located throughout the nation. The distribution of Walton's products
can be better understood by referring to the graphs provided below:

Figure 1.4

Page | 11
The Head of Marketing at the company closely monitors all the distributors for both Walton and Marcel
products. The domestic market is divided into 32 zones, and as per the business policy, the zonal manager
is accountable for overseeing and comparing the inventory of the company's distribution chain. Once a
product is prepared, it is initially stored in the company's warehouse and then dispatched to its end
customers through the designated distribution channels.

a) Exclusive Distributor: At the exclusive distributor level, there are approximately 5,100 distributors
and around 16,000 sub-dealers who obtain products from the corporation and then resell them through
various methods. Customers place orders with Walton, and the company delivers the goods either using
its own transportation or through the customers' preferred mode of conveyance.

b) Walton Plaza: Both sub-dealers and end-consumers benefit from Walton Plaza, which serves as a
significant buyer of Walton products. With 382 showrooms located nationwide, Walton Plaza facilitates
the sale of Walton items. Walton Plaza purchases from Wal-Mart, which then transports the merchandise
to Wal-Mart's storage facilities. Both customers and dealers have the option to purchase Walton Plaza
items from the company. However, it's important to note that Walton Plaza exclusively promotes Walton-
branded merchandise due to its role as an exclusive distributor.

2. Corporate Sale: WHIL also employs direct sales to sell its goods to corporations. Upon receiving
orders from corporations, the company fulfills the goods and services requirements of its customers.

Internship Experience
2.1. Job Responsibilities

I worked as an intern at the HR department of Walton Plaza in the Training and Development team. This
provides me with the opportunity to learn about the functions of training and development in real life in a
corporate sector. My main job responsibility is to arrange a training session for the trainers which includes:

 Call all the plaza managers to inform about one of his staff’s next training schedules.
 Make a confirmation list of the training and give it to the respective trainers.
 Prepare monthly questionnaires for every training in a google form and Online Exam Portal.
 Assign employees for specific questionnaire in Online Exam Portal.

These are the main responsibilities I was entitled to perform every month of my internship period. Besides
there are some additional works that I have done which are:

 Internal & External Communication: There are sometimes when problems have been arisen
regarding log in issue in a zoom meeting or attending in Online exams. At that time, Plaza
managers or employees used to call me to inform about the problems. I try to solve the problems
by communicating with my immediate supervisor.
 Prepare PowerPoint Slides for training.
 Make ‘Meeting Minutes’ for the team.
 Create different types of Excel files regards daily works.
 Evaluate MCQ scripts and create result sheets in Excel etc.

2.2. Functions of the Department

Walton Corporation's Training and Development team is an integral part of the company's human
resource’s function, dedicated to enhancing the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of its employees. The
team is comprised of highly skilled professionals who design, deliver, and evaluate training programs
across various departments and levels of the organization.

Page | 16
Currently, Walton Plaza has around 600 plazas. These plazas are divided into divisions based on regions.
Every day one division is chosen and gets calls for online/offline training. The training sessions are
arranged throughout the month. Both online and offline training are arranged for the employees, but online
training occurs more.

The types of trainings provided by The Training and Development team has given below:

Orientation Program: Walton arranges an orientation event for new staff members at the plaza. This
program provides a concise yet thorough overview of the company, including its culture, and helps
familiarize new employees with the norms and regulations of the organization. Through this training,
employees learn how to effectively fulfill their roles within their respective sectors. Successful completion
of the orientation session is a requirement for all new employees before they begin their regular work
duties. It ensures that they are fully equipped to perform their job responsibilities with confidence and
competence.

Product knowledge Training: Walton conducts product knowledge training for all employees
working at their plaza, including plaza managers, assistant managers, sales officers, and sales executives.
As we know, Walton has a large variety of products with different models. Therefore, it is important to
have a proper knowledge of the products which require extensive product training. The primary goal of
this training is to equip employees with a comprehensive understanding of Walton's products, enabling
them to provide information effectively and accurately to customers. Some product knowledge trainings
are Refrigerator training, KAP (Kitchen Appliance Product Training), HAP (Home Appliance Product
Training), DPI, Mobile etc.

Behavioral Training: Walton recognizes that customer satisfaction goes beyond providing high-
quality products and encompasses excellent customer service and behavior. In today's competitive market,
building customer loyalty requires not only good products but also courteous behavior towards customers.
To achieve this, Walton arranges behavioral training for all plaza managers and staff. The focus of this
training is to develop effective communication skills, including speaking in a respectful manner with
customers and handling customer interactions with professionalism and respect.

3.1. Analysis of Industry

Specification in the Industry

Walton has integrated artificial intelligence and automation into their manufacturing process to ensure the
production of high-quality items in a cost-effective and efficient manner. As a leading player in the
Electrical & Electronic (E&E) industry, they have established Bangladesh's first all-inclusive production
facility. This facility leverages advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and automation to
optimize the manufacturing process, resulting in enhanced product quality and operational efficiency. By
utilizing these cutting-edge technologies, Walton strives to maintain its competitive edge in the E&E
industry and deliver superior products to their customers.

Figure 1.9

Walton manufactures a diverse range of electrical and electronic equipment with an annual manufacturing
capacity of 10 million units, tailored to market demand. As the largest professional manufacturer in the
industry, Walton focuses on producing electrical and electronic items with a strong emphasis on cost-
effectiveness, quality, design, and innovation. The company utilizes modern technologies and specialized
expertise to contribute towards a technologically advanced, environmentally friendly, and sustainable
society. Walton's commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in their use of advanced
technology and specialized experience to create cutting-edge products that align with long-term
sustainability goals.

Page | 19
Size, Trend and Maturity of the Industry

Bangladesh has historically relied on imported electrical and electronic (E&E) goods, but there is now a
growing trend among assemblers and manufacturers to consider exporting their products to other
countries. The E&E industry has experienced rapid growth, with approximately 3,000 E&E enterprises
operating in Bangladesh, providing employment to millions of people, and growing by about 15%. With
the right policies in place, Bangladesh has the potential to become an exporter of E&E products. This
sector includes LED lights, tube lights, and other related sub-sectors, and in recent years, Bangladesh has
established several E&E manufacturing firms. Among the fastest-growing E&E sectors in Bangladesh are
television, refrigerator, and air conditioner manufacturing.

The locally manufactured or assembled consumer electronic appliance market in Bangladesh has
experienced significant growth, doubling in size over the past five years. This growth is attributed to
increased investment from Bangladeshi investors and the rising purchasing power of the middle-class and
lower-middle-class population. According to Md Sanaullah Shahid, president of Bangladesh Electronics
Merchants Association, the local products now dominate over 80% of the consumer electronics market in
Bangladesh, as compared to 2016 when it was the opposite. Research conducted by the Indian high
commission revealed that in 2016, the consumer electronics market size was $1.8 billion, but now it stands
at about Tk 400 core (Bangladeshi currency), with over 70% of the market being dominated by local
products, as reported by Md Salim Ullah, director of marketing at Jamuna Electronics and Automobiles.
Furthermore, databd.com, a Bangladeshi business data provider, forecasts that the local consumer
electronics market in Bangladesh is expected to grow to $5.17 billion by 2025.

3.2. Main Competitors of Walton

Walton is a Bangladeshi Electronics Manufacturing company. Based on its market share, Walton doesn’t
have strong competition in the market.

Figure 1.10

Page | 20
As we can see in the above figure, WHIL market share is 71.70% from which Walton has 66% market and
Marcel, a brand of Walton has 5.70% market share. So, we can say, Walton is ruling in the industry as a
local manufacturing company. But still there are some companies who are playing a significant role as
competitors. They are Singer, Jamuna Electronics, Samsung, LG, Minister etc. The comparison between
these companies based on market share are shown in a pie chart below:

Figure 1.11

Here we can see, among all the electronics manufacturing companies, Walton has the highest market share.
With a dominant market share of more than two-thirds in the local refrigerator market, approximately half
in the television market, and around one-third in the air conditioner market, the company is actively
pursuing its ambitions to expand its presence on the global stage. After Walton, Singer, Jamuna, Eco+, LG
are in the race. So, we can consider these companies as Walton’s competitors.

3.3. Comparing Walton’s HR functions with the theoretical Knowledge

I have learnt about lots of theories of HR throughout my BBA course. In this section, we will see whether
Walton is following all the bookish theories of HR that we learnt in their daily operation or not.

As a major in HR, I have learnt the basic functions of HR, methods of Manpower Forecasting,
Compensation, Strategic Human Resource Management, International Human Resource Management,
Human Resource Information System. Now I am going to relate the theories under these courses with
Walton’s actual performance in the table format below:

Training & Development

Bookish Knowledge VS Actual Practice

Training and development are critical functions within organizations that aim to improve the skills,
knowledge, and abilities of employees. Training refers to the process of imparting specific skills or
knowledge to individuals, while development focuses on broader, long-term growth and improvement.
Together, they contribute to enhancing the capabilities and performance of employees, which in turn
positively impacts organizational effectiveness and productivity.

Walton plaza is very conscious about their employee’s development and proficiency in work. Therefore,
they establish a separate office for Training & Development named Walton Plaza Efficiency
Improvement Center. All the training is conducted in the training center through professional trainers &
behavior counselors.

Steps of Training & Development are written as below as flow chart:

Training Needs
Assessment

Design and
Development of
Training Programs

Training Delivery
and Implementation

Evaluation and
Assessment of
Training
Effectiveness
Figure 1.12

Page | 24
Walton’s Training & Development procedures also described as flow chart include:

Choose one division

everyday training.

Design proper training

materials for
conducting the session.

Conduct the training in

both Online & Offline
way.

Do training Evaluation
by taking pre & post
evaluation exam.
Besides, monthly
auditing has also been
done.

Figure 1.13

Comparison: From both the figures, we can say that Walton follows overall all the steps except proper
Training Needs Assessment. They choose one division which has 40 to 50 plazas for each day training.
Throughout the month, they cover all the divisions for the training, and it goes the same way in the
following month. So, I think, there is a gap in this step. Training needs assessment is very important to
deliver proper training to the right person. Otherwise, employee development won’t happen in a right way.
Walton should focus on training need assessment. It will be beneficial in a long way.

Secondly, I noticed that all the employee is not getting the training. One division has around 40 to 50
plazas. They select around 30 to 35 employees for training and make a confirmation list. Within the

Page | 25
confirmation list, it is seen that most of the employees doesn’t join the session. So, in that way, there are
some employees who are not getting the training. Walton should take some necessary steps for those who
are not attending the sessions. Besides, most of the training are conducted in Online. Therefore, employees
don’t pay proper attention in the session. Here, proper development is lacking.

My Suggestions:

 Do a proper Training Needs Assessment. They can visit the plazas monthly and identify who and
where employees are lacking in Product & Behavioral knowledge, note it down and create a list.
 They should conduct more offline training than online. Offline Training is more fruitful than
online. Employees don’t take these trainings seriously which is why employees are not giving their
100% as the company wants despite providing proper training. So, proper offline training should
be taken care of.
 Take some necessary strict steps for those employees who don’t join the training and don’t pay
attention after being joined. Otherwise, employees won’t take these training seriously. When they
come to know that there are consequences of not attending or paying proper attention in the
sessions, they will start taking it seriously.

4.1. Discussions & Implications

Am I satisfied?

I am partially satisfied as an intern in Walton Plaza. There are many things that I appreciate about Walton.
The place where I used to work has a good working environment. My immediate supervisor and colleagues
were supportive enough. Whenever they assigned me any task, they used to describe the whole process of
how to do it. Besides, If I faced any problem, they were always helpful towards me. While doing an
internship at Walton, I experienced a real corporate life. These are the factors that satisfied me as an intern.
But there are some factors that I found dissatisfying. The working hours at Walton are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The work pressure is quite high. But they paid very less remuneration in return. Besides, their
remuneration scale for interns varies from university to university which I found very dissatisfying
because all of us as interns are working under the same workload.
So, I would say I am partially satisfied with the Walton Plaza’s whole working policy. The problems that
I found as dissatisfactory factors are shown as a Flow chart below:

High pressure in work

remuneration scale for
same position under
the same workload.

Less Remuneration

4.2. Conclusion

Based on the analysis of Walton, it can be concluded that the company is a leading retail corporation with
a strong global presence. Walton's strengths include its extensive retail network, diverse product offerings,
and efficient supply chain management. The company has experienced consistent growth over the years,
driven by its focus on customer satisfaction and competitive pricing strategies. However, Walton also faces
certain challenges, including increasing competition from e-commerce giants, changing consumer
preferences, and potential regulatory risks. The company's heavy reliance on its brick-and-mortar stores
could be a vulnerability in the face of rapidly evolving retail trends and shifting consumer behaviors. In
terms of opportunities, Walton could explore further expansion in international markets, invest in e-
commerce capabilities to compete with online retailers, and diversify its product offerings to cater to
changing consumer demands. By equipping employees with the necessary skills and knowledge, the
Training and Development team can help Walton remain competitive in the evolving retail landscape and
adapt to changing consumer demands. The company could also focus on sustainability initiatives and
corporate social responsibility to align with evolving consumer expectations and societal trends.

WHIL (Walton Hi-Tech Industry) has both Bangladeshi and Indian Employee in their Factory.
Bangladeshi employees are known for their strong work ethic, resilience, and adaptability. They often
demonstrate a high level of dedication and commitment to their work and are willing to put in extra effort
to achieve their goals. On the other hand, Indian employees are recognized for their strong technical skills,
diverse knowledge base, and ability to adapt to changing technological trends. They are often well-
educated and possess a high level of expertise in their respective fields. Indian employees also tend to be
creative and innovative, with a knack for problem-solving and critical thinking. In conclusion, both
Bangladeshi and Indian employees bring unique strengths and characteristics to the workplace. Walton
should recognize and appreciate these differences, while also fostering an inclusive and collaborative work
environment that promotes effective communication, mutual understanding, and cultural sensitivity. By
leveraging the strengths of both Bangladeshi and Indian employees, Walton can create a diverse and
dynamic workforce that contributes to their overall success.
