T H I S S T U D Y I S PRIMARILY CONCERNED W I T H T H E I N F L U E N C E O F
their experiences in Italy on the fiction of the first group of
American writers to be notably affected by travel in that
country. It largely disregards their knowledge and conception
of Italian culture acquired through books, reproductions of
works of art, and other means available outside Italy. It is
only incidentally concerned with other matters bearing on
these writers' Italian experience : their awareness of other
travellers in Italy, predecessors as well as contemporaries;
their influence on each other; their travel in other foreign
countries; their motive in leaving and general attitude toward
America; the varying conditions in Italy during the span of
their several visits. Nor does this study evaluate, except inci-
dentally, the literary worth of the Italianate works. It aims to
consider these writers above all as a group, the first of severed
such groups to be inspired by personal contact with the Italian
scene.
T h e discussion of each writer begins with an outline of his
Italian itinerary. Next his comments on his experiences in Italy
in such factual accounts as letters, diaries, and travel books are
summarized. T h e use of Italian material in all his published
works is then briefly surveyed. Finally the treatment of Italy in
his fiction is analyzed in detail.
In assembling the background material used in the introduc-
tory chapter, I was greatly aided by Guiseppe Prezzolini's

before them, but the time of the Roman state, which they
evoked chiefly through references to Roman ruins.
In the third place, these American writers found in Italy a
world where—strikingly unlike the situation in America—art
objects abounded, artistic sensibility was widely diffused, and
artists enjoyed enormous prestige. For American painters and
sculptors these aspects of the Italian environment were of more
immediate practical value than they were for American
writers. For the writers, the implications of these facts were
what mattered. They bore out the hypothesis, nowhere else so
convincing, that the creative imagination was the source of a
life independent of society and even of time—an inner life,
entailing danger as well as delight. These writers commonly
projected such a life, and in so doing in their Italian-laid
fiction they relied heavily on artist characters and Italian
objects of art. In this connection they particularly tended to
employ symbolism.
In Italy, finally, this group of American writers appre-
hended moral issues more pressing and more complex than
those familiar to them in the New World. They often depicted
Italian civilization as corrupt, particularly as it was manifested
in the Roman Catholic Church and in a conventionalized
society. Yet they also saw in these institutions, as in the Italian
past, influences for good. In dealing with moral issues in their
Italianate fiction these writers commonly employed two
imagistic configurations : the innocent American girl exposed
to pernicious influences on foreign soil and the Garden of
Eden. The character type of the American girl abroad devel-
oped in American fiction, indeed, almost exclusively in an
Italian setting. T h e myth of the Garden of Eden was freely
employed by American writers of all kinds throughout the
nineteenth century, it is true. Yet many of the first group of
fiction writers who visited Italy found that country peculiarly

Sicily; and cut short his tour of the country (to his brothers'
disgust) in order to travel with the young Virginian J. C.
Cabell, who was going from Rome directly to France.
Irving's most memorable association at this time was with
Allston, whom he met in Rome. Fifty years later he recalled
how one of their rambles had almost changed the course of his
life. They had been returning to the city from a villa on the
outskirts, he wrote Evert Duyckinck in 1854 :
The blandness of the air, the serenity of the sky, the transparent
purity of the atmosphere, and that nameless charm which hangs
about an Italian landscape, had derived additional effect from
being enjoyed in company with Allston, and pointed out by him
with the enthusiasm of an artist. As I listened to him, and gazed
upon the landscape, I drew in my mind a contrast between our
different pursuits and prospects. He was to reside among these
delightful scenes, surrounded by masterpieces of art, by classic
and historic monuments, by men of congenial minds and tastes,
engaged like him in the constant study of the sublime and
beautiful. I was to return home to the dry study of the law, for
which I had no relish, and, as I feared, but little talent.
