B. Presentation/Learning Proper
Immediately after installing an
operating system (e.g., Windows
and Apple’s macOS), the next step
is to check if the driver for each
peripheral/device attached into the
computer were also installed. A
driver is a small piece of software
that enables a piece of hardware to
communicate with the operating
system and other software
installed in a computer.

Peripherals/devices like mouse,

keyboard, monitor, disc drives,
video card, sound card, network
card, and even a printer will only
work properly if their respective
driver is installed. Normally, latest
versions of operating system such
as Windows 10 contains generic
drivers in its library.

To verify if the driver of a

peripheral/device is already
installed, follow the steps below to
open Device Manager in
Windows:
1. Press and hold the Windows
logo key then press the R key to
open Run dialog box.
2. Type devmgmt.msc on the Run
dialog box.
3. Click OK button.

Installation of Device Driver

To install the driver of the
Unknown device and Video
Controller shown in the first
figure, let us search the driver
from the Internet then download
and install it on our computer. To
do so, follow the steps on the table
below:

1. Open Device Manager in

Windows.

2. Locate the device whose driver

is uninstalled. In this case, let us
start with the Video Controller
device. Right click the device. A
context menu will appear.

3. Click Update driver.

4. Click Search automatically for

updated driver software.
 5. Windows will automatically
search online for drivers.

6. Windows will automatically

download the driver.

7. Windows will automatically

install the driver.

8. Windows has finished installing

the driver for Video Controller
device.

9. For the Unknown device, repeat

steps 2 to 4. Steps 5 to 8 will be
done automatically by Windows.

10. Windows has finished

installing the driver for the
Unknown device.

11. No more device marked with

yellow triangle background. It
means the driver for each
hardware device is now already
installed. Finally, restart your
personal computer or laptop.
