CHAPTER 3- RESPIRATION IN ORGANISMS

MODULE - 15

( Types of Respiration)

1. Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic respiration .

Ans.

Aerobic Respiration Anaerobic Respiration

Carried out in the presence of Oxygen. Carried out in the absence of Oxygen.

Carbon dioxide and water are the end products. Carbon dioxide and alcohol or lactic acid are the end
products.

Energy released is more. Energy released is less.

It is a slow process. It is a fast process.

2. After we work hard or perform physical activity, we feel hungry. Explain why .

Ans. When we work hard or perform physical activity( like running, swimming, cycling) we need more
energy. To fulfil the energy requirement,we breathe faster.Fast breathing helps in supply of more
oxygen to our cells.Due to this, the rate of breakdown of food increases and more energy is released.
The rapid breakdown of food makes us feel more hungry.

3.Why do we get relief from cramps after a hot water bath or a massage?

Ans. Hot water bath or massage improves circulation of blood. As a result, the supply of oxygen to
the muscle cells increases. The increase in the supply of oxygen results in the complete breakdown of
lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water. Thus, we get relief from cramps after a hot water bath or a
massage.
