Calapardo Perspective in Dentistry

DMD 1-A Reaction Paper 2

For this lecture on Perspective in Dentistry, we were very lucky to be introduced to the
different fields in dentistry that we might encounter in the following years. Such topics include
Pediatric Dentistry and Children with Special needs, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics,
Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics, Implantology, Oral Surgery, and lastly, Forensic Dentistry.
In this essay, I would very much like to share my first impressions on the given topics. I believe that
each of these fields in dentistry will help broaden my understanding of the overall mechanisms of
this profession, while also inspiring me to look forward to the many possibilities that this course will
bring when it comes to dental care.

In the field of Pediatric Dentistry and Children with Special Needs, I learned about
the importance of early dental care and the promotion of proper dental health care to children,
especially those with special needs. Restorative Dentistry focuses on the different techniques that
can be done to restore teeth. This field shows us just how important preserving natural teeth is,
always aiming to achieve proper oral health that lasts. Prosthodontics, on the other hand, focuses on
the process of replacing teeth altogether. I think that this field represents hope, that no matter how
bad things could get regarding the health of our teeth, things can be done to ultimately reverse and
replace the damages done. Endodontics focuses on root canals, with emphasis on the many diseases
that could manifest in the mouth. Dentistry as a medical-related field, is committed to the
maintenance of our natural teeth. With Periodontics, healthy gums mean an overall healthy mouth.
I’m excited to learn about disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease.
Implantology is all about technological advancements and how they can be used for the betterment
and overall health of our mouths. Oral Surgery, on the other hand, is a very useful and also important
field that encompasses different dental problems that can be fixed through surgical procedures.
Lastly, Forensic Dentistry is such an interesting field where there is an application of both dental and
forensic fields. This field is commonly used in investigations where human remains need to be
identified. This can be done by looking at dental records that show telltale signs of who those human
remains might belong to. this lecture on the various aspects of dentistry has been eye-opening. Each
field plays a vital role in dental care. Whether nurturing early oral health in pediatric dentistry,
mastering the workings of prosthodontics, or honing the precision of endodontics, everything
contributes vitally to patients' holistic well-being. As I chart my path forward, I eagerly anticipate
digging deeper into these areas, imagining how they might shape my course within the dental
profession, preparing me with the ability and insight to help transform patients' lives.
