The sequence of events or sequencing is the order in which a series of
occurrences are arranged in chronological order. It is important in a reading
comprehension strategy because it helps the learners to make sense of how series
of events unfold in their reading through identification of the components of the
story using sequencers or signal words.

In this lesson, you are expected to sequence a series of events/ at least 3

events using signal words/mentioned in the text listened to (LS1CS/EN-L-PSA-
BL/LE/AE/JHS-3)
Read each sentence and choose the correct word sequencers inside the box. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Try to measure what you already know about our lesson. Get your pen and a
sheet of paper to start answering Learning Task 1.
Learning Task 1
Read the story .

Last Sunday, Jane and her sister, Kathelyn walked to their

grandmother’s place. On their way, they stopped by the fruit store, bought
bananas, and ate them as they walked. On her way out, Kathelyn picked some
roses from their mother’s garden. They also saw their neighbor Mr. Cruz
passing-by. Jane waved hello to Mr. Cruz and helped him catch the
newspaper that was blown by wind. Finally, Jane and Kathelyn arrived at their
grandmother’s house. Grandmother came out and happily received the fruits
and flowers. She gave them a big hug and a plate of cookies.

Identify the proper sequence of the events by writing numbers 1—5 on the
space before each sentence.

_______ Jane waved hello to Mr. Cruz and helped him catch the newspaper that
was blown by the wind.
________ Kathelyn picked roses at their garden for their grandmother.
________ She gave them both a big hug and a plate of cookies.
________ Jane and Kathelyn walked to their grandmother’s home.
________ They saw their neighbor.

Learn further how to use sequencer words or signal words.

Sequence is the order in which things happen. Here are some sequencers or
signal words:
First next At first
Second later after
Third last in the end
Before finally

In organizing series of event, the order of things happened in a particular story are
arranged in correct sequence.
Example:
If you want to inform the readers how to build a paper airplane, it
is important to identify the steps on how to do it.
To make a paper airplane, the first thing to do is to get a sheet of paper.
Next, fold the paper down the center. Then, fold the top corners down to meet the
centerline.
You may use first, next, and then to show the sequence. These may help
readers how the steps connected.

Well done! You are now ready to answer Learning Task 2.

Learning Task 2
Rearrange the jumbled sentences below in proper order to form a story. The
sequencers or signal words in the sentences maybe used as guide or clue.
 Thirty minutes later, Jimmy and his mother got to the shelter.
 The first one he saw was a big dog.
 It was a sunny Sunday morning when Jimmy’s mother told him that
they are going to the animal shelter to choose a puppy.
 Finally, he found the puppy that was just right for him.
Then, when he saw that his mom was serious, he jumped into
the car.
 When she said that, Jimmy couldn’t believe his ears.
 The second one he saw was too jumpy. He spent forty minutes
looking at the puppies and trying to decide which one would be
best for him.

Cesar’s Talent
Cesar was excited about his new watercolor set. He loved to draw and
paint. He liked to draw and paint race cars, trucks, and airplanes. He liked to use
all kinds of colors in his pictures. He was good in mixing colors together to make
new and interesting colors. First, he showed one of his new pictures to his father
one day. His father said, “These are such amazing colors! Do you know how our
eyes see different colors?” Then, Cesar had never thought about that before, but
he was interested. “No, he said. “We just see them, I guess.” “Well,” father said.
“It’s a little more complicated than that.” “Tell me, then!” Cesar said. “Maybe it
will help me learn how to mix cool new colors.” “All right,” Cesar’s father said.
“But you need to know about light. A light beam is made up of smaller beams of
different colors. Our eyes see these many-colored beams as colorless. But when a
light beams hit an object, our eyes see that object as a certain color. This is be-
cause the object absorbs all of the color beams except one. The color that isn’t ab-
sorbed is the color we see.” Cesar thought about all this for a bit. Lastly, he
thought he understood what his father was saying. “What else can you tell me
about color?” he asked. “I think you’re really going to like hearing about how the
color wheel works,” his father said. “But right now, it’s time for dinner.”

Learning Task 5
Write the numbers 1 through 7 in the boxes beside the events to show the se-
quence of what happens when Terrence makes a color wheel, from first to last.

Cesar showed one of his new pictures to his father.

Ana and Lyn bought medicine for their
mother, Aling Linda. ULITAB
Since their mother found it difficult to
read the medicine label due to the size of the
texts, they read the instructions found on the
drug's label.
According to the medicine labels
and instructions of use, the name
of the medicine is ________________ and it has __________ milligrams. Linda
needs to take ______ tablet one time _________. She also needs to take it with
________of ___________.

Remember: We read medicine labels to understand and follow the instructions

to avoid harmful effects. If there are instructions that are unclear to us, we may
ask for an advice from pharmacist.

Learning Task 2

Read Ana’s story and join her as she follows the instructions below.
Ana is a Junior High School learner enrolled in Alternative Learning
System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency program. Her teacher asked the
class to think of a topic related to Waste Management. Her interest in the
project led to her eagerness to do it but she is required to follow the
instructions below.

Before you do this activity make sure you are wearing facemask and gloves.

Go to the area where classroom trash bin and follow the instructions

Verbal and Non-verbal Communications
I
Imagine how your life would be like if you were mute or unable to hear.
Or, what if you will able to speak but the people around you could not hear
anything what you were saying. It would be difficult, wouldn’t it?

We are blessed with the capacity to say things and express ourselves
through the use various ways of communication. We can hear and receive
information from other people. The ability to use and understand language is
a gift that human beings often take for granted. The wonderful gift of
language is essential to humans. It is unfortunate, however, that in spite of
our ability to use this gift, communication between and among us is often not
very effective. It may be because of the wrong choice of words which result in
hurting feelings, confusion and misunderstanding. This slows down the
communication process.

This lesson, will teach you about the verbal and non-verbal
communications. It will also help you discover the importance of the gift of
language, how you make use of this gift and become a better communicator.
Finally, it will teach you how to handle feedback through verbal and
non-verbal cues.

In this lesson, you are expected to use appropriate verbal and non-
verbal communications when developing, maintaining, and ending cues,
conversations, dialogs, speech, and interviews
 Nodding of one’s head
 Smiling, frowning, and opening the eyes when surprised
 Raising an eyebrow
 Showing concentration on the person speaking
 Showing interest in others’ spoken opinions
 Interpreting correctly the meaning of a speaker’s tone of voice
 Paraphrasing what a speaker has said.

Verbal communication takes place directly between two persons and is
often known as face-to-face communication. This takes the form of talks, a
public address, verbal discussions, telecommunications and other artificial
media, such as audio-visual aids speeches and orders, holdings of meetings
and conferences, lectures, social get-togethers with friends and family, and
training sessions.

There are advantages and disadvantages in using verbal communication.

Advantages of Verbal Communications

1. It is simple, direct, the least time consuming and least expensive.
2. It is more communicative and effective.
3. It provides an immediate feedback.
4. Since every information cannot be put into writing, most of it is
delivered by means of oral instructions, discussions and electronic
conversations.

Disadvantages of Verbal Communications

1. Verbal discussions may often misinterpreted if there is some causes of
indifference between the receiver and the sender.
2. Due to many communication gaps, as a result of status and other physical
or personal barriers communication is incomplete.
3. Not convenient for long messages.
4. Spontaneous responses may not be carefully thought.
5. The spoken words can be more easily misunderstood than the written
words.

ALS CALABARZON JHS English 18

Advantages of Non-verbal communication
1. Easy presentation
Information can be easily presented in non-verbal
communication through visual, audio-visual and silent means
of non-verbal communication.
2. Effective substitution
Non-verbal message may substitute for the verbal
message especially if it is blocked by noise, interruption, long distance
etc. for example; gestures-finger to lips to indicate need for quite, facial
expressions- a nod instead of a yes.
3. Helpful to illiterate people
This type of communication use gestures,
facial expressions, eye contact, proximity, touching etc. and without
using any spoken or written word. So, it is very much helpful for
illiterate people.
4. Significant to handicapped people
Non-verbal cues of communication greatly help the
handicapped people especially to people with hearing Impairment or
im p ed im ent . T h ey ex ch a ng e m essag e t hr o ug h the
movements of hands, fingers, eyeball etc.

graph, sign etc. that can be seen very much attractive.
6. Quick expression of message
Non-verbal cues of communication like sign and symbol
can also communicate some messages very quickly than written or
oral messages.
7. Wise use of time
The message of non-verbal communication reached the
receiver very fast. For this reason it reduces the wastage of valuable
time of the communicator.

Disadvantages of Non-verbal communications

1. Unclear and imprecise discussion
There is no use of words or language which expresses clear
meaning to the receiver.
2. Long conversations are not possible
In non-verbal communication, long conversation and necessary
Explanations are not possible. No party can discuss the particular
issues of the messages.
3. Difficult to understand
It is difficult to understand. It requires a lot of repetitions in
non-verbal communication. Since it uses gestures, facial
expressions eye contact, touch etc. for communicating with others
which may not be understandable for the simple and foolish people.

19 ALS CALABARZON JHS English

3. Costly
In some cases non-verbal communication involves higher cost as
it needs money to spend to learn sign language
4. Misrepresentation of information
Since it uses gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, touch,
sign, sound, paralanguage etc. for communicating with others, there
is a great possibility in distortion of information in non-verbal
communication.

E
Talking to someone involves both verbal and non-verbal gestures to express
one’s feelings or ideas.
