Annex B: Case Scenarios on Leadership

Scenario
Scenario 1:
Aaron often rises to the challenge of being a leader in different situations. When his secondary
school teachers and peers nominated him for leadership positions in class and CCA, he embraced
the opportunities and carried out his responsibilities to the best of his abilities. He is genuinely
interested in developing his leadership skills, and actively reads and watches videos on social
media on leading self and others.

Recently at his Debate Club CCA EXCO elections, Aaron was not elected for the President role that
he campaigned for. Instead, he was voted into the EXCO as the Secretary. Aaron was disappointed
by the results, even though he understood that the role of a Secretary was also important.

Scenario 2:
Sarah has been in leadership roles for most of her time in primary and secondary school. She was
appointed to the prefectorial board in Primary 4 and went on to become the Head Prefect in
Primary 6. In secondary school, Sarah continued to serve in the Student Council and was also the
Vice-President of her CCA in her graduating year. In the classroom, her teachers and peers often
nominated her to lead group discussions.

Sarah appreciated all the leadership opportunities that were given to her. However, she wondered
if she could take a break from assuming the responsibilities of being a leader as she felt weary.
Sometimes, Sarah envied her friends who did not have to carry the load of leadership
responsibilities on their shoulders.

Scenario 3:
Jayden has always been known as a great team player. Responsible and on-task, he would always
do his share of the work in class and CCA. Jayden’s work was of good quality, and he had never
received any adverse feedback. However, he had also never been appointed into any formal
leadership positions, nor had he been asked to lead discussions unless the group leader was
absent.

Jayden was excited by the various opportunities in his new school and his teachers had been
telling the class to use their time wisely to achieve personal growth. However, he was unsure of
whether he could indeed be a leader, especially when compared to other students who had more
leadership experience.

Scenario 4:
Diana had taken on different types of leadership positions since her days in secondary school. She
was formerly Vice-Chairperson of her class in Secondary 3, and a committee member in the Choir.
However, at times, Diana felt inferior compared to other student leaders within her school. She
often felt that her ideas and suggestions were not good enough.

Recently, Diana was persuaded by her friends to run for elections in Choir, and she was elected as
President. When her outgoing-President briefed her about the projects and work involved, Diana
could not help but feel overwhelmed and questioned her capability in leading and contributing to
the CCA. She felt that the Vice-President would be a better fit for the job. She also wondered if she
could live up to the high standards that were set by her seniors.
