3. Metonymy الكناية

كما هو الحال مع األجهزة األدبية. يتم استخدامه بشكل متكرر في كل من األدب والخطاب اليومي.يرتبط ارتبا ًطا وثي ًقا بهذا الكائن

.»التابعة للتاج» حيث يستخدم التاج ليعني «الملك» أو «الملكة
A famous example of metonymy is, from Edward Bulwer Lytton's play Cardinal Richelieu:
: من مسرحية إدوارد بولوير ليتون الكاردينال ريتشيليو،مثال شهير على االكناية
"Pen" stands for "the written word." القلم تعني “الكلمة المكتوبة
"Sword" stands for "military aggression." السيف تعني “العدوان العسكري
Metonymy as a stylistic (literary) device is to vary expressions and produce an effect for the
reader. It also serves as colourful way to take the ordinary and dress it up into something
poetic or beautiful. Understanding the context of metonymy is important. Every time you hear
the word “pen,” it’s not necessarily a stand-in for “the written word.” Sometimes, a pen is just
a pen. Look for context clues in the sentence to help you decide if the word is simply a word
or if it is a representation. These examples include the metonymy, the possible object or
concepts for which it could fill in and example sentences to further enhance your
appreciation and understanding of the term.

Metonymy is used to provide meaning and connections to concepts. Writers often use it in
this way, as well as to be more poetic or simply to make a long sentence more concise.

In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, “ears” represent the ability to listen. Shakespeare is
not asking for everyone to chop off their ears, but rather he's asking them to pay attention:

4. Synecdoche
Generations of writers have used synecdoche in both poetry and prose. It is a device used in
many idioms, colloquial expressions, and slang terms. One common form of synecdoche
uses a body part (hand, heart, head, eyes, etc.) to stand in for an entire person.
إنه جهاز يستخدم في العديد من المصطلحات والتعبيرات. في كل من الشعر والنثرsynecdoche استخدمت أجيال من الكتاب
جز ًءا من الجسم (اليد والقلب والرأس والعينينsynecdoche يستخدم أحد األشكال الشائعة من.العامية والمصطلحات العامية

In Toni Morrison's novel Beloved, the character Baby Suggs employs synecdoche in a
sermon:
: في خطبةBaby Suggs synecdoche توظف شخصية،Beloved في رواية توني موريسون
Yonder they do not love your flesh. They despise it. They don't love your eyes; they'd just

In this context, "your flesh," "your eyes," and "the skin on your back," all stand in for "you."
Baby Suggs is speaking of the hostility and violence that her community of freed slaves
faces from white people. By describing her people as body parts rather than as whole
people, Baby Suggs also emphasizes how the white people she describes dehumanize
black people.

Here, "thy face" stands in for "you." Macbeth is simply telling the servant to leave, but his use
of synecdoche makes the tone of his command harsher and insulting, showing the audience
how angry he really is.
لكن استخدامه للمزامنة يجعل نبرة قيادته أكثر قسوة، ماكبث ببساطة يطلب من الخادم المغادرة.» يقف «وجهك» في «أنت،هنا
. مما ُيظهر للجمهور مدى غضبه ح ًقا،وإهانة
In "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," Samuel Coleridge uses synecdoche in the following
lines:
في السطورSamuel Coleridge synecdoche يستخدم،»The Rime of the Ancient Mariner« في
:التالية

Here, "wave" stands in for the whole ocean (or at least the part of the ocean— larger than a
wave—that is relevant to the text). So, when the Ancient Mariner says "the western wave,"
he is referring to the ocean to the west, extending to the western horizon.

The language of the literary text, be it original or translated, does not only inform, i.e., convey
lexical meanings, but it also communicates and aesthetically affects. Literary language is
informative as well as expressive or emotive; it has a semantic as well as an aesthetic
function. Its structure is a dynamic texture of vivid stylistic variations which leave no room for

monotony, dullness and stagnation. To this end, it, mostly, employs highly deviated style and
literary diction where the morphological forms and syntactic patterns are both conventional
and unconventional, automatized and foregrounded. It is this combination that gives rise to
its dynamics and sometimes "licenses" deviation and produces what might be called
"Literary Shock" on the reader by means of creativity and neologization (the coinage of new
words or expressions) which, to use Mukarovsky's words "arise as intentionally aesthetic
new formation" and "whose basic feature are unexpectedness, unusualness and
uniqueness".

Performing the job of an original writer, a dynamic translator endeavours to make his
translation communicates and aesthetically pleases by employing, among other things,
rhetorical devices to suggest vividness and emotiveness. In this respect, literary translation
should resemble AN original and not THE original work of art and should ideally be a work of
literature. Thus, it must:

Due to the above requirements, in addition to the intricate, hybrid and aesthetic nature of
literary translation, one may well concur with Adams in asserting that literary works are
harder to translate than they were to compose, “for the original composition is the art of
choosing the exactly right word or expression, and includes the option of changing and
modification as deemed appropriate whereas the art of literary/ belletristic translation is the
art of choosing among a set of possible compromises.

To obtain the above, a sequence of five distinctly discernible though interrelated steps may
be propounded:
: يمكن عرض سلسلة من خمس خطوات يمكن تمييزها بوضوح وإن كانت مترابطة،وللحصول على ما سبق
1. First, the translator reads the whole text, be it a paragraph, a chapter or a book, for
general comprehension and appreciation.

Through the dynamic process of affixation, i.e., employing prefixes, suffixes and/or infixes,

1. The nominal style is the tendency to use nouns in preference to verbs; conversely,
the verbal style is the use of verbs, particularly verbs of action, instead of nouns. The
former style is static, the latter is dynamic. An example for both styles can be cited in
the conditional sentences beginning with prepositional phrases or subordinate
clauses respectively.

Some renowned translators render the English sentences comprising verbs to be as Arabic
nominal sentences employing the Arabic defective verb to be kana as explicitly evinced in
the following sentences from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte:
يجعل بعض المترجمين المشهورين الجمل اإلنجليزية التي تتكون من األفعال على أنها جمل اسمية عربية تستخدم الفعل العربي

Static style also subsumes sentences containing copulas (or equational or linking verbs such
