SUMMARY REPORT OF STUDENT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECT

1. INFORMATION
- Project title: A Research and manufacture of a mobile phone-based
acquisition system for motorcycle engine controllers.
- Principal Investigator: Le Quang Truong
- Class: CDTOT1
- Faculty: Faculty of Vehicle and Energy Engineering
- Course: 15
- Advisor: Tran Anh Trung Ph. D
2. SPECIFIC AIMS
This project aims to create a motorcycle controller capable of connecting to a
mobile phone. The controller is designed to receive signals from the sensors of the
motorcycle's engine control system and the control signals from the Engine Control
Unit (ECU). This enables the determination of the engine's fuel consumption and
performance based on the received signals. Additionally, the design and fabrication
of the controller aim to provide anti-theft alerts and inform users about the vehicle's
maintenance schedule.
3. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
The new feature in this project is to bring existing car features, such as fuel
consumption reports, anti-theft warnings, and maintenance schedule notifications, to
motorcycles in order to enhance their functionalities and provide a better user
experience. However, adding these features to motorcycles requires careful
consideration of the size and weight of the equipment to ensure that it does not affect
the motorcycle's balance, weight distribution, and overall performance. The materials
used for the equipment should also be taken into account to avoid adding unnecessary
weight to the motorcycle. Additionally, the aerodynamics of the motorcycle should
be considered to minimize air resistance and turbulence, which can impact fuel
efficiency and handling. Furthermore, the durability and robustness of the added
equipment should be ensured to withstand the harsh environment that motorcycles
are exposed to. In summary, proper engineering and design considerations are crucial
to ensure that the added features are beneficial without compromising the
performance, safety, and fuel efficiency of the motorcycle.
4.PROJECT CONTENT
The content of the topic reflects the reality of using motorcycles worldwide
today. From this, creating a motorcycle control system connected to a phone is
necessary. The research then focuses on designing and manufacturing the control
system: hardware design, programming the software for the microcontroller, and
developing a mobile application.
5. RESULTS
The results indicate:
• The successful design of a control system comprising both control circuitry and
control software.
• The design and implementation of a stable mobile application. The mobile
application functions smoothly.
• Recognition of the sensors used on the motorcycle and the methodology for
reading values from these sensors.
• Successful measurement of signals from the sensors and the display of these
values on the mobile phone for user awareness.
The system operates stably, achieving the majority of the predefined objectives.
6. BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE
Motorbikes are widely used around the world, with approximately 1.2 billion in
operation daily. However, most motorbike users lack awareness of important vehicle
indicators such as fuel consumption and maintenance schedules, which can have
various negative consequences. Firstly, not knowing the fuel consumption of a
motorbike can led to increased fuel costs and environmental pollution. Understanding
fuel consumption allows users to calculate and predict fuel expenses, as well as gauge
the number of emissions released into the environment. By reducing fuel
consumption, users can contribute to environmental protection and mitigate their
impact on global issues. Additionally, monitoring fuel consumption can provide
insights into the overall operating status of the vehicle, allowing for early detection
and repair of potential engine or transmission problems.
Secondly, theft warning is crucial as motorbikes are often targeted by thieves,
with many lacking anti-theft devices. The number of motorbike theft cases remains
high, and thieves are becoming more sophisticated in their methods. Therefore, users
need a device that can notify them when their vehicle is tampered with, enabling them
to take prompt action to protect their assets.
Thirdly, motorcycle maintenance is often neglected, particularly among female
users. Many waits until their vehicle experiences a problem before seeking repairs.
However, lack of regular maintenance can result in wear and tear of vehicle
components, leading to safety issues such as impaired braking system performance,
inadequate headlights, and unstable steering. It can also lead to increased fuel
consumption and higher operating costs, as well as environmental pollution. Regular
maintenance allows drivers to identify potential problems early and address them
before they become major issues. It helps maintain vehicle performance and safety,
reduces costs, and ensures the well-being of drivers and other road users. Therefore,
informing users about their vehicle's maintenance schedule is essential for safe and
efficient vehicle operation.
