The SPOORTHY Averages CSAT 2024

In this chapter we will learn following,

1. Averages (Mean) meaning

2. Averages applications & Properties
3. Weighted Average (Combined Mean)
4. Average Speed

Introduction

Suppose there is a group having so many values, imagine if we represent that

entire group by a single value, this leads to concept of averages.

The basic formula for the average of n numbers n1 , n2 , n3 ,… nn is

Average ( An ) = n1 + n2 + n3 .... + nn
n
So total of numbers = ( An )  n.

Example 01:
The average of 22, 24 and 26 is
22 + 24 + 26 72
Sol: = = = 24
3 3

Important Note: If there are two numbers a, b (a<b) their average lies between a & b
only.

. Concept -01: Meaning of Average

Replacing each and every number in the group with Average (Mean) value.

The average of 22, 24 and 26 is 24.

So, 24 is the unique value of this group, if we replace each and every number of this
group by 24, what happens?

Still Sum won’t change, i.e., 22 + 24 + 26 = 72 and also 24 + 24 + 24 = 72

(22 + 2) + 24 + (26 – 2)  + 2 + 0 – 2 = 0.
Positive deviation (+2) = Negative deviation (-2)
Net deviation = +2 – 2 = 0 (Always zero)
22 + 2 = 24
24 + 0 = 24
26 – 2 = 24

his new Average is?
(a) 41 (b) 40 (c) 42 (d) 44

5. The average monthly income of a person in a certain family of 5 is Rs. 10,000. What
will be the average monthly income of a person in the same family if the income of
one person increased by Rs.1,20,000 per year? (CSAT 2016)
(a) 12,000 (b) 16,000 (c) 20,000 (d) 34,000

Concept – 02: Replacements/ Removals

Whenever a number or something is replaced by another number, observe what
is happening (find out net change) in the group to find Mean.

Example 02:
The average age of 6 members is 33. If a member aged 30 resigns and a man aged 18
becomes a member, then the average age of the new group is?
(a) 35 (b) 31 (c) 33 (d) 30
Sol: Net change = – 30 + 18 = – 12, divide this equally for all so, – 12/6 = – 2.
New average is 33 – 2 = 31

6. The average age of 10 numbers is 36, two numbers with values 15 and 21 are replaced
with 12 and 20, and then what is the new average?
(a) 36.40 (b) 35.40 (c) 27 (d) 35.60

7. The average marks of 100 students are given to be 40. It was found later that marks of
one student were 53 which were misread as 83. The corrected mean marks are (CSAT

Concept – 03: Averages Applications in Numbers

Example 03:
Average of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5?
(a) 3 (b) 4 (c) 2 (d) 3.5
Sol: Average of equally spaced numbers (2 – 1 = 3 – 2 = 4 – 3 = 5 – 4 = 1) is middle
number, it is 3 here.

If a big series is given it is difficult to figure out middle number so better to follow another
way, Average = (First + Last number)/ 2

In above series, Average of first and last numbers, i.e. (5 + 1)/ 2 = 3.

Mean = (First number + Last number)/ 2 = (Smaller number + Larger number)/ 2

Example 04:
Average of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6……2023?
(a) 2022 (b) 1012 (c) 1011.5 (d) None
Solution: = (1+ 2023) / 2 = 1012

8. Consider a sequence of seven consecutive integers, the average of first five integers is
k. The average of all seven integers is:
(a) k (b) k + 1 (c) k + 2 (d) None

9. The average of 50 consecutive natural numbers is x. What will be the are average when
the next four natural numbers are also included? (UPSC CDS 2019)
(a) x + 1 (b) x + 2 (c) x + 4 (d) x + (x/54)

10. Five consecutive even numbers 2x, (2x + 2), (2x + 4), (2x + 6), (2x + 8), average is 24,
then
I. Largest number is = 28
II. Average of smallest and largest numbers is 24
Which of the above statements are/is correct?
(a) Only 1 (b) Only II
(c) Both I & II (d) None of the above

11. There are thirteen 2-digit consecutive odd numbers. If 39 is the mean of the first five
such numbers, then what is the mean of all the thirteen numbers? (CSAT 2017)
(a) 47 (b) 49 (c) 51 (d) 45

12. The average of all the numbers between 6 and 500 which are divisible by 5 is
(a) 275 (b) 225
(c) Can’t be determined (d) None of the above

13. Consider the following statements.

1. The average of 1st 100 natural numbers is = 50.50

2. The average of all the prime numbers and composite numbers up to 100 is = 50.50
3. The average of all the odd numbers in first 100 natural numbers is = 50
4. The average of 1st 100 even numbers is = 101
Which of the above statements are/is correct?
(a) Only 1, 2 & 3 (b) Only 2, 3 & 4
(c) Only 1, 3 & 4 (d) All the above

Concept – 04: Averages Properties

Note:
(1) Let an average of a group of numbers is A, If each and every number is added
by some constant say (k), then average is also added by same value k, so new
average is A + k.

(2) Similarly, if each and every number is multiplied by some value say (k), then
average is also multiplied by same value k, so new average is (A) k

Example 05:
4 years ago average age of A and B is 30 years. Present average age is?
(a) 32 (b) 34 (c) 26 (d) 36
Sol: = Both are increased by 4 years, so present average is 30 + 4 = 34 years.

Example 06:
In a flower shop there were 6 flowers in each bouquet. If the seller has doubled the
number of flowers in each bouquet then the new average of flowers in each bouquet:
(a) 12 (b) 8 (c) 3 (d) none
Sol: = 6 x 2 = 12

14. The average of 11 numbers is 9. If each of these 11 numbers is multiplied by 6 and

then 5 is added to each of these resultant numbers, then the new average is:
(a) 45 (b) 67 (c) 68 (d) 59

Concept – 05: Weighted Average (Combined Mean)

Suppose there are two sections A and B. Average marks of section A (30 students)
is 60 and average marks of section B (20 students) is 80. Find the average marks of entire
students in the two sections.
Total marks of section A = 60 x 30
Total marks of section B = 80 x 20
Total marks in A & B = 60 x 30 + 80 x 20.
Average is = [60 x 30 + 80 x 20] / (30+20) = 3400/50 = 68.
Overall average (= 68) is in between 60 and 80 only.

So whenever we have two (or) more groups, whose individual averages are known,
we need to find average (weighted average) of all the groups together. Assume there are
total n groups, each group having x1 , x2 , x3 ......xn elements with averages A1 , A2 .. An
respectively.

x1 A1 + x2 A2 + x3 A3 + ...... + xn An
Weight Average is =
x1 + x2 + x3 + ...... + xn

Concept – 06: Average Speed

In Time speed &distance, Distance = Speed x Time.

Average speed = Total distance travelled/ Total Time taken

Example 07:
Aman started journey from Nirmal to Hyderabad which is 200km at the speed of
40kmph, then he went Bangalore which is 300km, at the speed of 20kmph further he
went to Kochi which is 500km at the speed of 10kmph.The average speed of Aman is:

Assume a car travelled distance d1 with speed s1 for time t1 , d 2 with speed s2 for
t2 , d 3 with speed s3 for t3 . Average speed = Total distance/ Total time.
Total distance = d1 + d 2 + d 3 & Total time = t1 + t2 + t3
d + d + d3
Average speed is = ( d1 + d 2 + d 3 )/ ( t1 + t2 + t3 ) = 1 2
d1 d 2 d3
