Print Media Academy – Introduction 1
Introduction
Prinect Signa Station is an application allowing the digital imposition or assembly of PDF
documents and Delta lists. With this application you can create fully imposed signatures
containing all marks and print control strips – i.e. all information required for imaging, print,
and postprocessing – for output to CtP, CtF and digital printing presses.
The application processes PDF documents and Delta lists. Although you can select Post-
Script files to be loaded, the Acrobat Distiller application will automatically convert them to
PDF; for this purpose, the Acrobat Distiller must be installed on the workstation. To optimize
PDF documents prior to processing with Prinect Signa Station you should have converted
them to PDF using the desired job options.
A TrimBox present in a PDF document is automatically used for page positioning. You can,
however, always move the page information by hand.
Using resources you can define plate templates, folding patterns, etc. to ensure you always
apply standardized formats. All workstations have access to the same data records if you
store default folders containing resources on a server and specify these in the application.
You can manage and process several product parts within one job, e.g. a 36-page brochure,
business cards, flyers, etc., thus allowing all jobs for a specific customer to be processed in
one file.
There are three default modes and two optional modes for creating a signature:
Automatic imposition: Here, you use a defined template that is multiplied as soon
as the last sheet is filled and more pages need to be
assembled. This mode does not allow a combination of dif-
ferent imposition schemes.
Montage: In this mode only the printing plate and the paper are
defined. This allows 1ups or collective forms to be created.
Packaging: In this mode the printing plate and the paper are defined.
Using cutting dies in the CFF2 format, forms for folding
boxes can be generated.
Label Optimization: Printing plate and paper are predefined for Label Optimiza-
tion like in the Montage Mode. Special input parameters
ensure optimum press sheet usage, for example for labels,
business or post cards.

25. The mark you have created appears in your Marks group folder.
You can always import your own marks into the program. Supported formats are PostScript,
EPS, and PDF. When importing marks, the Acrobat Distiller application automatically con-
verts PostScript and EPS files to PDF, which are then loaded into the program.
1. In the step that follows you will import the 6GS_F52_510x12 4GS_F52_510x12 and
8GS_F52_510x12 DIPCO mark available as EPS in the

13. Click the Save and then the Close button to save the imported mark. The mark you
have imported appears in your Marks group folder.
15. After successful marks import, all three marks appear in your marks folder.
Since the Dipco marks were specially prepared, selecting the .main file automatically loads
any information that is vital for processing – namely subsequent output – composite PDF
files as well as preseparated PDF documents.
i
Print Media Academy – Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks 57
In the next step you will create a composite mark from the three color control bars you have
imported.
The benefit of composite marks over other color control bars is the fact that you only need
one file for creating 4-, 6- or 8-color jobs. To save time and to eliminate a potential error
source, Prinect SignaStation will automatically choose the correct mark for output. The pro-
cedure will be explained on the basis of a composite mark for SM102. Of course, autoregis-
ter composite marks can be created in this way as well.
1. Highlight the 4GS_F52_510x12 mark in its marks folder and choose Edit Mark from the
shortcut menu.
4. To add the 6GS_F52_510x12 color mark, click the black triangle in front of the Compos-
ite Mark option and then click the folder icon to load the next mark from the marks
resources.
5. Highlight the mark named 6GS_F52_510x12 in its marks folder and then click OK.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks 59
6. The added mark appears in the Composite Mark list of the Marks Import Editor.
7. Click the folder icon again and add the 8GS_F52_510x12 mark from your marks folder
to the composite mark.
8. To save the composite mark, click the Save and then the Close button.
In this exercise step, we will edit an existing plate template – SM52 in the Training group –
and save it under a new name.
The color control bar on the plate template is to be replaced with the DIPCO color control
mark we have imported, and our Text Mark is to be positioned on the plate template.
1. Select Jobs & Resources > Plate Templates in the menu to go to the Plate Templates
resource window.
3. Highlight SM52 and choose Edit Plate Template from the shortcut menu.

6. Highlight the Colorbar-4C mark in the Marks List or click the positioned mark directly on
the plate template.
7. To replace the mark with the newly imported mark, click the arrow icon.
62 Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks – Print Media Academy
8. Highlight the mark named Dipco_SM52_CompositeMark in its marks folder and con-
form your selection with OK.
9. The following dialog asks you if the existing mark is to be replaced with the newly
selected mark. Confirm with Yes.
10. The color control bar replaces the old control bar and its width automatically adapts to
the subject width.
11. Highlight the color control bar in the list and move it downward by 10 mm. To do so,
specify a value of 5 mm in the Position Y: text box.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks 63
13. Now that you have placed the text mark on the plate template you can define the mark’s
position in relation to the reference point.
15. All marks positioned on the plate template appear in the Marks List. Highlighting a mark
in the list automatically selects the mark in question in the preview window. Selecting a
mark in the preview window automatically highlights the mark in question in the Marks
List.
64 Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks – Print Media Academy
16. To better assess the result, you can scale the view by either selecting the desired zoom
i factor in the Zoom popup menu or by clicking the Magnifier tool in the toolbar (the tool-
bar is located at the window bottom) and clicking the area you wish to magnify.
17. To return to the complete Preview choose the Auto option from the Zoom popup menu.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 4: Exercise 3 – Plate Templates and Marks 65
18. Now highlight the text mark in the list. Select the Plate option as reference point and
move the mark to the following coordinates:
Position X: 20 mm
Position Y: 48 mm
19. To save the plate template under a new name go to the Plate Template tab.
20. Type SM52_CompositeMark in the Name text box as the new name.
21. Click Save and then the Close button to save the plate template under a new name.

11. Then adapt the width and height of the imaging window to match the Plate width and
height.
114 Chapter 8: Exercise 7 – Creating output parameters and plate templates – Print Media Academy
There are several ways to position marks on a plate template. You can either load the marks
in the Marks tab and position them, or you can simply drag and drop marks from the Marks
Resources to the template and then position them using the Marks tab.
You will see hotspots – magnetic anchors – allowing the marks to be automatically posi-
tioned when you drop marks on the plate template. The hotspots are printing plate-, paper-
or subject-specific.
A mark positioned, for example, on a paper hotspot will automatically change its position
when the paper size is reduced or increased in the current Signa job.
Choose a Subject Hotspot to ensure the marks always adapt to the currently used folding
sheet/assembly block.
Changes always occur from the selected reference point when you change the X- and Y-
i position using the Marks tab. Positive values will move the selected mark upward or to the
right, negative values move the mark downward or to the left.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 8: Exercise 7 – Creating output parameters and plate templates 115
2. Go to the Marks Resources tab in the Plate Template Editor, drag the
Dipco_SM102_CompositeMark color control bar from the Dipco 2.1_SM102 marks
folder and drop it on the upper middle subject hotspot.
3. Release the mouse button when the mark snaps into place.

In this exercise, you will learn how to easily and quickly create multiple 1ups from a file in the
Montage working mode. The 1ups are positioned with a gap and assembled in a single form
so that there is only one front form.
The PDF document that is to be used for this exercise neither contains a correct trim box nor
was it saved centered. In order to allow the 1up to be positioned correctly, the Trimmed Size
is specified using the Document Inspector before the page is assigned.
The Assembly Block should then be positioned in the center of the selected paper.
However, the Preferences of the Prinect SignaStation program must first be adjusted for this
exercise and the following one.

defined pop-up menu.
A dialog in which you can enter the designation for the new assembly element opens.
Then click Apply to save the designation for the element you have typed.
12. After you have defined an assembly element, you can enter the width and height of the
elements in the 1up Definition region.
14. Enable the Autom. crop marks option so that the trim marks can be generated automat-
ically for each 1up.
15. To have the same contents for each 1up, enable the Same Content for All 1ups option in
the Assembly Block Parameters area.
16. Now the sheet is to be filled automatically with this 1up and the distances between the
individual 1ups are to be specified.
17. Click Completely of the Fill Sheet option to fill the sheet.
18. To specify the distances between the individual 1ups, enter 6 mm in each Distances
region X and Y.
136 Chapter 9: Exercise 8 – Montage – Print Media Academy
19. The resulting press sheet appears in the thumbnail view in the right window section of
the dialog. Due to the distances the number of 1ups no longer fits on the paper.
20. Click Completely again to recalculate the number of 1ups: in this case, one row is also
removed.
22. The following result should now appear in the Press Sheet graphics window.
23. Choose File > Save As... to save the job to the predefined folder.
In the next step, the assembly block is to be positioned in the center of the selected paper.
1. To determine the right and upper edges of the assembly block for the selected paper,
show the sheet dimensions.
2. Show the Press Sheet graphics window and click the symbol in the lower part of the
graphics window.

5. Go to the Press Sheet Inspector to center the assembly block. Click the Both Directions
button to use the outer assembly block corners for centering the block.
To provide fast access to particular folders you can add Favorites to the default path speci-
fied in the Preferences when saving or opening a Signa Job or importing PDF documents. In
this section we describe how to add favorites when opening a PDF document.
1. Select File > Import > Documents or, in the Browser window, go to the Contents tab and
choose Documents using the shortcut menu.
2. To add the currently opened folder to the favorites, click the triangle on the right window
side.
4. Click the triangle of the Favorites option to add the Signa_Training folder to the
favorites. The folder then appears in the list.
1. Select file V01_4c_1Nutzen.pdf from the Signa_Training > Uebung8 folder and click
Open in the Open dialog.
4. Show the Document Inspector using Inspectors > Document Inspector and go to the
Page tab.
6. The current document size (297x210 mm) is shown in the Trim Box region of the Docu-
ment Inspector. If you click the page in the Document graphics window, the trimmed
size is indicated by an orange frame.
142 Chapter 9: Exercise 8 – Montage – Print Media Academy
7. Before the page is assigned to the press sheet, the trimmed size is to be set to
148x105 mm with 3 mm trim.
If you change the values in the Page tab of the Document Inspector, you can follow the
changes directly in the Document graphics window.
The change in size is executed starting from the lower left corner of the document.
9. After this step, the trim size is correct, but the clip path to be printed has not yet been
specified.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 9: Exercise 8 – Montage 143
10. Since the object is located at the start of the cut, the trim box must be moved 3 mm to
the right. To do so, specify a value of 3 mm in the Rel. Position X: text box.
11. To position the trim box on the correct Y position, specify a value of 102 in the Rel. Posi-
tion Y: text box.
If you subtract the final trim size (105 mm) from the actual document height (210 mm),
the trim box is located precisely on the upper edge of the 1up (210 mm –105 mm =
105 mm).
144 Chapter 9: Exercise 8 – Montage – Print Media Academy
In other words, the trim box must now be moved downward by 3 mm (105 mm –3 mm =
102 mm). In this way, the trim box is centered directly on the 1up.
12. To assign the page to the press sheet, go to the Contents tab in the Browser window.
13. To load the page to the press sheet, simply drag the page onto the press sheet window.
14. Show the Press Sheet graphics window. The result should be as follows:
17. To do this, use the output parameter set that you generated in the previous exercise.

document, delete the page assignment of the document or copy pages to clipboard.
When you have highlighted a page, you can open the Document Inspector from the shortcut
menu, create the Preview (72 dpi) or the Hires Preview (144 dpi) of the selected file, open
the document in Adobe Acrobat, assign the page or delete the page assignment and copy
pages to clipboard.
168 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
Internal marks
The Internal Marks tab lists the marks used in the present job.
When you select a mark, you can use the shortcut menu to edit the job internal mark,
replace the internal mark, refresh the internal mark, copy the internal mark to clipboard and
delete the internal mark. The changes immediately take effect in the current document.
Without any internal mark selected you can open the shortcut menu to create marks with the
Marks Editor, the Text Marks Editor, create Ink Pickup Bars, Color Control Bars and Special
Color Control Bars, or Marks Import for the current job.
Resources
Select Jobs & Resources > Resources & Machines to go to the Resources browser.
The Resources tab is used to create, edit and administrate the templates/defaults for jobs,
product parts, plate templates, schemes, marks, papers, page and paper formats, plate
layouts, customer data, output parameter sets, user data and report headers.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 169
Resources consist of settings/defaults that are defined once and can be used over and over.
In the case of a plate template, for example, not only the paper to be used, but also all the
marks that are related to the plate template, can be set so that these steps do not have to be
carried out again and again.
The individual entries are arranged in a tree structure. To show the individual branches, click
the triangle in front of the entry.
For a better overview, the individual resources can be divided into groups. To create a new
group, click a resource entry and open the shortcut menu. If you open the shortcut menu on
an active group, you can rename or delete a group, insert or import a data set, export, lock or
release the selected group. Depending on the type of group selected, you can, for example,
create a new plate template, a new mark, etc.
To edit individual elements of a group, highlight the desired object and open the shortcut
menu. You can now edit the highlighted object (this can also be done by doubleclicking it),
create a new object, copy, lock or release the selected object or copy resources to the clip-
board (here: Copy Plate Template) or paste resources from the clipboard (here: Paste Plate
Template).
170 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
Machines
The Machine tab is used to create and administrate default settings for filmsetters, plateset-
ters, sheetfed presses and web presses.
Depending on the type of group selected, you can, for example,
create a new platesetter data set, etc.
To edit individual elements of a group, highlight the desired object and open the shortcut
menu. You can now edit the highlighted object (this can also be done by doubleclicking it),
create a new object, copy, release the selected object. Using Copy Resource (here: Copy
Platesetter Data Set) and Paste Resource (here: Paste Platesetter Data Set), you can copy
an object from one group to another.
There are 6 inspectors in the Prinect Signa Station program, with which the entries that were
defined using the Job Assistant can be inspected/changed in the current job: Job Inspector,
Job Part Inspector, Folding Sheet Inspector, Press Sheet Inspector, Page/1up Inspector
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 171
and Document Inspector. The Inspectors window is the only window that continuously
adapts its contents to match the selected working mode to the effect that the number of tabs
can change.
The individual inspectors can be opened using the Inspectors command, the corresponding
icon in the toolbar or by opening the shortcut menu in the Graphics or List window.
The Job Inspector is divided into three tabs: Administrative Data, Colors and Attributes.
The Administrative Data tab can be used to inspect/change job-related information, such as
Job Number, Job Name and Customer Name, the number of layers used etc. for the current
job. When compiling data for Prinect Printready, you must check respective CMYK colors (if
present) or specify the number of spot colors in the Planned Colors item under Default for
JDF and job ticket.
172 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
The Colors tab is used to list the colors used in the loaded and assigned PDF document.
With this tab, spot colors can be transformed into CMYK or combined with another spot
color. You can assign spot colors in the document a particular marks layer if you enable the
User Color Mappings in Marks option. Without this option enabled, the first spot color is
automatically assigned to the first marks variable (X), the second spot color to the second
marks variable (Z), etc..
To use the screen angles specified in the Preferences for output, enable the Use Default
Screen Angles option in the Screen Angle area. Here you can also edit separate screen
angles for the current job.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 173
When you enabled the Column for cutting die color option in the General settings, a fourth
row named Cutting Die is added to the Color tab. This option only affects subsequent JDF
output. When you enable the Cutting Die option for a color, this color will be treated like the
ProofColor during output, i.e. it will be printed on a form proof but automatically ignored in
the final output.
The Marks Editor or Text Marks Editor provides 15 freely configurable marks variables. You
can define the contents of these marks either in the Preferences or in the Attributes tab.
174 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
The Product Part Inspector is divided into five tabs: General, Master Pages, Binding, Plates
and Schemes.
The General tab can be used to change the title of the selected product part, enter com-
ments and change the working mode. If the Job Assistant was used to select the Imposition
working mode, this tab can be used to subsequently change the page total. If you are work-
ing in Imposition Mode, you can also change the page names – the page index – of individ-
ual marked pages here to, for example, more easily distinguish the cover of a job from the
inner pages. For some documents, this can significantly simplify the assignment of the indi-
vidual pages to the press sheet. You can specify the number for First press sheet, First fold-
ing sheet and First page in the Start Conditions area.
The Master Pages tab can be used to specify/change the page definitions of the master
pages, the trimmed size, the bleed, and the scale, rotation and mirroring of the pages. Spe-
cial master pages can also be created and their size can be determined in this tab.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 175
In the Binding tab, you can select the binding procedure, enable creeping and subsequently
specify the creeping values. If the cut, fold, and collating marks or folding crosses, folding
sheet label, folding sheet cut and folding stop were not enabled when a Signajob was cre-
ated, you can enable them in this window so that they are set automatically. In the Gripper
Collator region, you can subsequently enable a gripper fold rear or a gripper fold front and
the desired gripper margin size. In the Parameters for Automatic Gap Computation area you
can define the maximum head gap and gap. You can also consider the routing margin from
the Preferences here. You can also define here if cutting dies are to be assigned to the
pages/1ups, the folding sheets or the scheme.
The currently selected template can be inspected and changed in the Plates tab. You can
select and add the printing plate from your resources, replace the currently selected plate or
remove a plate again. The rule for generating the back sheet can be changed using the
Placing Mode popup menu. The selected paper is shown in the Paper Definition region and
can be changed there for the current job. In the Sujet Position on Paper area you can define
if the sujet is to be automatically positioned on the paper or if you want to manually specify
Offset Baseline and Left.
176 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
You can inspect and change the selected folding scheme and the template in the Schemes
tab. The distances for the top, bottom and inside gaps can be changed subsequently using
this tab. The Active Inspector Section contains four items: When you select Gaps and Mas-
ter Pages, you can assign Special master pages in this window. To assign a special master
page, click the appropriate page symbol in the schematic representation and choose Assign
Master Page from the shortcut menu. Another option is to click the Special master pages
button. A new window opens where you can assign the special master pages to the scheme
pages.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 177
Switching the Active Inspector Section to All Folding Sheets lets you move folding sheets or
create groups feasible for mixed binding (= combination of perfect binding and saddlestitich-
ing). To move a folding sheet, either type the new index in the No. column, or select Move
Folding Sheet from the shortcut menu. To group several folding sheets for mixed binding,
select the folding sheets to be grouped and choose Create Group from the shortcut menu.
Selecting the Bottling option in the Active Inspector Section popup menu lets you - if
required - rotate the page contents by certain values.
178 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
The Press Sheet Layout option lets you rotate folding sheets or place folding sheets head-
to-head, foot-to-foot or head-to-foot in order to prevent the automated generation of multiple
1ups. This window also allows to Singularize Folding Sheets in order to create gang run
forms. You can load a plate layout data set from the resources in the Plate Layout Area.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 179
If the Montage option was selected when a job was created, the Inspector for Product Parts
has only two tabs: Definition and Plates.
The Folding Sheet/Assembly Block Inspector is divided into three tabs: Attributes, Marks
and Marks Resources.
If the Imposition or Autom. Imposition option was chosen as the Working mode, you can use
the Attributes tab to change the X- and Y-positions of the folding sheet. The top, bottom and
inside gaps can be changed using the thumbnail display of the scheme. All changes can be
carried out on all sheets of the same type. If the Montage option was chosen as the Working
mode, this tab can be used to create new assembly blocks or to repeat and position existing
assembly blocks.
The Marks tab can be used to position the marks in relation to the selected scheme. Cut,
fold, and collating marks as well as folding crosses and folding sheet cuts can also be incor-
porated using this window. The width, height and clip path of a mark (the part that can be
imaged) can be specified in Expert Mode. All changes can be carried out on all folding
sheets of the same type.
The Marks Resources tab can be used to position individual marks on the folding or assem-
bly sheet using drag-and-drop or to create/edit new marks and to edit, delete and replace
internal marks in the job.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 181
The Press Sheet Inspector is divided into three tabs: Press Sheet, Marks and Marks
Resources.
Use the Press Sheet tab to center folding sheets on a press sheet. You can also edit the
name and the size of the currently selected press sheet. It is also possible to change the
paper size, to make offsets and to offset the start of the paper in this tab. The list provides
information about the assigned folding sheets/assembly blocks of the highlighted press
sheet. In the lower region of the dialog, the X- and Y-positions of the folding sheet in relation
to the press sheet can be offset. All changes carried out here can be transferred to all press
sheets of the same type.
In the Marks tab, the marks can be positioned in relation to the press sheet, while previously
positioned marks can be changed, replaced, edited and deleted. The width, height and clip
path of a mark (the part that can be imaged) can be specified in Expert Mode. All changes
can be carried out on all sheets of the same type.
182 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
The Marks Resources tab can be used to position individual marks on the press, folding or
assembly sheet using drag-and-drop or to create/edit new marks and to edit, delete and
replace internal marks in the job.
The Page/1up Inspector is divided into three tabs: Attributes, Marks and Marks Resources.
The Attributes tab displays the current trimmed size of the highlighted page/1up; the
trimmed size cannot be changed in this window. The Trim region can be used to change the
trim for individual pages.
To offset the contents of the page in relation to the trimmed size, enable the By user (view
options) option and enter the desired offset values in text boxes Offset X and Offset Y. The
contents of the page are offset in relation to the bottom left corner. Positive values will move
the contents of the page upward or to the right, negative ones downward or to the left. If you
want to increase/decrease the contents of the page, enter the scaling factor in text boxes
Scale X and Scale Y. In the Creep Values region, you can enable creeping and enter the
creep value in the X and Y directions. The current creep values are also indicated here if
creeping was enabled. If required, you can enable or disable creeping for selected pages.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 183
In the Marks tab, the marks can be positioned in relation to the selected page, while previ-
ously positioned marks can be changed or deleted. The width, height and clip path of a mark
(the part that can be imaged) can be specified in Expert Mode. All changes can be carried
out on all pages from here.
The Marks Resources tab can be used to position page-related marks using drag-and-drop,
create new or edit existing marks and change, delete, edit and replace internal marks in the
job.
184 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
The Document Inspector is divided into two tabs: Document and Page.
The Document tab displays general information about the currently selected document. The
information displayed in the Properties region consists of metadata that can be saved when
a PDF file is created with the Acrobat Distiller program. In this case, options Process DSC
Comments and Retain document information from DSC in the Extended tab must be
enabled in the Job Options with which the PostScript document is converted to PDF. The
colors used throughout the entire document are displayed in the list of Available Colors.
The Page tab displays information about the highlighted page. The values for the TrimBox
are displayed in the TrimBox region; these can be changed for the selected page, for all
even or odd or for all pages of a document, depending on the selection made under Apply
to:. By default, the TrimBox is used for positioning. You can use the Choose popup menu in
the Trim box section to select another page box (contained in the current PDF document).
The selected page box is then used as the trim box for page positioning. You can offset the
contents of the page in relation to the TrimBox in the Rel. Position X and Y fields. The colors
used on the highlighted page are displayed in the Available Colors region.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 185
The Graphics Window contains 5 tabs in which you can visually inspect the graphic repre-
sentation of the press sheet, the folding sheet/assembly block, the page list, the press sheet
list and the document.
There control elements, which you can use to control the contents of a Graphics Window,
in the lower region of graphics windows press sheet, folding sheet/assenbley block and
document.
Fields X and Y indicate the current cursor position or the X- and Y-start coordinates of the
measuring frame. The W and H fields indicate the width and height of the measuring frame.
Choose the Magnifier tool and click the area in the graphics window you wish to
magnify. Simultaneously press the Alt key to zoom out.
Choose the Hand tool to pan the image section in the graphics window.
The Measuring frame lets you draw a rectangle in the graphics window on the press
sheet or folding sheet/assembly block the values of which are indicated in the X, Y,
W and H fields. With this frame you can also create internal marks of frame size.
Selecting the measuring frame tool adds a number of tools to the tool bar, which let
you launch the Marks Editor, the Text Marks Editor and the Marks Import Editor, cre-
ate color pick-up bars, cover marks, color control bars and special color control bars.
This tool lets you edit clipping paths when you have chosen the Packaging option.
For more information on this tool refer to the Packaging chapter.
With this tool you can create custom dimensions. Press the Alt key to delete the
dimensions.
This symbol can be used to show/hide the back in Graphics windows Press Sheet
and Folding Sheet.
186 Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors – Print Media Academy
Clicking this symbol shows the dialog for adjusting the representation, dimension
and grid for displaying the press sheet, folding sheet or document. Select the active
layers to be displayed in the Layers section of the View tab if you work with layers in
the current job.
The Scale popup menu can be used to select the scale of the press
sheet, folding sheet and document views. If you choose the Auto option,
the press sheet, folding sheet or document is automatically fitted to
match the current window size.
You can use the Color popup menu to check how many print forms are
used for each press/folding sheet or to see which colors are used on the
highlighted page. If you are working with separated PDF documents,
you can use the Color popup menu to go to the individual color separa-
tions; if you choose Colored, a composite view in color appears.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 11: Windows and Inspectors 187
The Press Sheet Window shows the currently selected press sheet, including the plate tem-
plate, paper and all the marks. In this view, you can also see whether the regions of the page
to be printed were positioned in the critical area.
If you call up the shortcut menu at any point in the Press Sheet window, you can also open
the Press Sheet Inspector or the Folding Sheet/Assembly block Inspector using this menu.
In order to be able to execute commands Swap Front and Back, Swap Folding Sheet, Move
Folding Sheet and Delete Folding Sheet/Assembly Block, the shortcut menu must be
opened in the Press Sheet window if a folding sheet / assembly block has been highlighted
(indicated by the yellow frame). Commands Create new assembly block and Duplicate
Assembly Block are available in the Montage mode only. The Fit Marks and Bleeds com-
mand is used to automatically fit a positioned color control mark to the width of the printed
image. This will delete unnecessary marks. When you select a mark on the press sheet, you
can use the Marks > Edit Mark to edit it or delete it from the press sheet with the Delete Mark
command. The Graphics command is used to save the highlighted press sheet as an image
or to print it. The Preview (72 dpi) or Hires Preview (144 dpi) command is used to create the
original view of the pages assigned to the press sheet. Select Delete Page Assignment to
remove the pages assigned on the selected assembly block or folding sheet. Assign Station
Numbers... is used in conjunction with the StationNumber mark for packaging printing. You

sheet, assigned contents and unassigned contents are shown in tables.
If you open the shortcut menu on a column header in one of the list windows, you can
remove the highlighted column from the list, automatically adapt the column size to the con-
tents of the column, open the dialog for choosing the fields that are available, display all the
contents in a table line or, if all the contents are displayed, display only the main rows.
If you use the shortcut menu to enable the Select Columns command, you can choose, in
the subsequent window, the fields that are to be displayed in the currently displayed list. To
add further columns, highlight the desired field in the Available Columns list and click Add
Column. To remove columns from the list, highlight the desired field in the Available
Columns list and click the Remove Column button. To change the order of the rows, high-
light a field in the Available Columns list and use the up or down arrow to move the selection
to the desired position.
This list contains, among other things, information about the generated press sheets, the
printing plate format, the folding sheet used (front and back printing), the colors in the docu-
ment, the job name of the product part and the paper size.
If you doubleclick a press sheet entry, the front form and, if present, the back form are dis-
played. To display the colors for each press sheet, doubleclick the individual forms.
You can use the shortcut menu to open the Press Sheet Inspector, start the output for the
selected press sheet , or save/print the press sheet list as an HTML file.

Print Media Academy – Chapter 12: Exercise 10 – 1up repetition front/back 199
Exercise description
Prinect Signa Station allows ink pickup bars, color control bars and special color control bars
to be created. In this step you will learn how to create several color control bars to be finally
combined into a composite mark.
Color control bars always organize elements according to their color sequence, with identi-
cal ink coverage values for all colors. In a special color control bar, however, the element
sequence of special color control bars as well as their ink coverage values can be defined as
desired.
2. Create a new group named Color Control Bars in your Marks group folder.
3. To do so choose New Mark > Color Control Bar from the shortcut menu.
200 Chapter 12: Exercise 10 – 1up repetition front/back –Print Media Academy
6. Choose the Color Control Mark (with AutoClip to sujet) option using the Marks Type
pop-up menu.
7. Choose the Lower middle option as reference point in the Hotspot popup menu.
9. Highlight the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black colors in the Choose Color Layer list.
The color selection defines the colors for which elements are to be defined in the color
control bar.
10. To do so, specify a value of 5 in the Number of Elements text box. This defines the num-
ber of individual control elements per color.
11. To do so, specify a value of 6 mm in the Element Width and Element Height text boxes.
This defines the width and the height of each control element.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 12: Exercise 10 – 1up repetition front/back 201
The mark width automatically changes to 1080 because the color control bar can only
contain complete elements and would be trimmed otherwise.
i
12. To suppress the frames enable the Elements without Frame option.
13. Leave the values in the Ink Coverage region at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100.
14. Click Save and then Close to save the color mark.
15. The new mark you have created appears in your Color Control Bars group folder.
16. Doubleclick the CMYK mark to create another color control mark (BW color control
bar).
202 Chapter 12: Exercise 10 – 1up repetition front/back –Print Media Academy
17. Change the Mark Name to Black and enable Black in the Choose Color Layer section.
i Renaming the mark prevents overwriting the original mark. The mark is thus saved
under a new name.
18. Click Save and then Close to save the color mark.
19. Doubleclick the Black mark to create another color control mark (Black + 1 spot).
Print Media Academy – Chapter 12: Exercise 10 – 1up repetition front/back 203
20. Change the Mark Name to Black + 1 spot and enable Black and Spot 1 (X) in the
Choose Color Layer section.
21. Click Save and then Close to save the color mark.
22. This way you can create any color control bar you need for your work.
23. The following screenshot shows a selection of possible color control bars.

the task in the Job Data window.
3. Type the job part name in the Name text box and choose Montage as the Working
Mode. Enable Sheet Optimization on.
5. Click Continue to go to the Assembly Blocks window. You can either specify the assem-
bly blocks step by step here, position them on the press sheet using drag-and-drop, or
use a mixture of both methods. In our case we position the files directly on the press
sheet.

6. Click Finished to close the Job Assistant. The result should be as follows:
7. Load all files from the Uebung21 folder. These are three labels of which different vol-
umes are to be printed.
416 Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization – Print Media Academy
8. Select the Press Sheet Inspector. You will set up all major parameters here once the
files have been positioned.
9. Positioning the files on the press sheet via drag-and-drop changes the Press Sheet
Inspector window contents.
10. Before you make all relevant settings here, please go to the Folding Sheet/Assembly
Block Inspector to make settings regarding marks or distances between files of one
assembly block.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization 417
11. Specify 5 mm each for left, right, bottom and top margin of each file in the Attributes tab.
12. Enable the Cut Marks and Also to inner 1ups functions in the Marks tab to assign sepa-
rate cut marks to each 1up.
418 Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization – Print Media Academy
13. Go to the Press Sheet Inspector. First specify the margins on the paper to be reserved
for the plate template marks in the Label Optimization pane. All margins will be set to
12 mm. Then specify the details for each master label. 1 is to be printed 1500 times.
14. Now highlight master label 2 and specify 2000 in Number of Copies, then go to master
label 3 where you specify 4000 copies.
You can now choose from one of three Optimization options: Horizontal, Vertical and
General:
a) Horizontal:
Label optimization occurs in horizontal ribbons. Ribbon formation starts at the
bottom left. The ribbons always fill the entire space between margins before a new
ribbon starts.
b) Vertical:
Label optimization occurs in vertical ribbons. Ribbon formation starts at the bottom
left. The ribbons always fill the entire space between margins before a new ribbon
starts.
c) General:
Label optimization occurs in rectangles or rectangular ribbons. This means: labels
of equal size are combined in rectangles if possible. Rectangle formation starts at
the bottom left. In most cases the rectangular ribbons do not fill the entire space
between the margins.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization 419
15. In this case we choose the General optimization method. Prinect Signa Station accord-
ingly configures the press sheet. A number of informative figures are displayed:
- Paper Usage* is 73.78%
- Paper Usage* per sheet** is 73.93 %
- Print Volume is 167
- 45 labels are positioned:
- Master label 1 9 times
- Master label 2 12 times
- Master label 3 24 times
16. When rotation is permitted for assembly blocks, you can optimize the paper usage with
the Automatic rotation option. Generally speaking, the variants permitted by the pro-
gram also greatly depend on the respective print conditions.
420 Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization – Print Media Academy
Result:
It is apparent that the Automatic rotation function yields a better paper usage because
more labels can be positioned.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization 421
18. Of course you must make sure the required marks appear on the press sheet. Correct if
necessary (see before).
20. The Ribbon Margin function, specified with 10 mm here, also affects all values. Consec-
utive labels of identical size and orientation are arranged in a ribbon. Such a label need
not be rectangular. An alternative view for assembly block generation without interfer-
ing contents information is available when you disable Show contents of pages/1ups in
View Properties.
422 Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization – Print Media Academy
Result:
Compared to the second case the arrangement is more feasible but the percentage val-
ues slightly less favorable.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization 423
22. If desired, you can, of course, fill the empty top right area. To do so, click the neighbor-
ing element in the Graphics Press Sheet view. You can then right-click and select Dupli-
cate Assembly Block.
23. You can use the arrow keys to displace the duplicated assembly block or position it by
typing numeric values in the Press Sheet Inspector.
424 Chapter 23: Exercise 21 – Label optimization – Print Media Academy
24. Of course you thus deliberately create a label 3 surplus. You can right-click in the Fold-
ing Sheets List View window and display the Surplus view by choosing Select Columns.
25. You can customize your view in the Select Columns dialog.
26. The following values are displayed; note that the label 3 surplus has grown due to the
duplicate.

27. Use the Save Table as HTML File function to save the resulting values regarding vol-
ume, paper usage, etc. Right-click again in the Folding Sheets List View window and
select the respective function.
30. To move the position of entire blocks you can press the mouse button, draw a box
around the areas of an assembly block to select them and then move them.

SM102. The file is to be set up as single-sided. Choose Creato_200_100x70 from the
Training group as paper.
6. Click Next card to go to the Cutting Die (CFF2) window. You can load the required CFF2
file here. Enable the Same content for all 1ups of a profile option under Cutting Die File
and Main Settings. As a consequence, all 1ups are assigned the same index number
and the 1up can be positioned only once. Leave all other setting unchanged. The infor-
mation in Info is directly retrieved from the CFF2 file.

7. Close the Job Assistant. The program should now look as follows if you click Both
Directions for Centering in the Press Sheet Inspector.
10. To do so, go to the Contents tab in the browser window, highlight the file in the list and
choose Open with Acrobat in the shortcut menu.
11. You can see how the file is to be cut later on (green line). Unfortunately there is an insuf-
ficient trim at the upper margin, which would cause problems during finishing.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 435
13. To load the document, drag and drop it on a 1up on the press sheet.
14. In the magnified view of the Document tab on the Graphics Window you can see that
there is enough trim at the upper corner.
436 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
15. Set the background color for the Folding Sheet/Assembly Block so that it clearly stands
out from the file to be edited. In the Preferences under View Attributes you find an
appropriate Display color.
18. For a better overview we hide the Symbols. Open the View Properties dialog and dis-
able the Symbols in the View tab.
438 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
19. The page content is incorrectly arranged with regard to the cutting die; the Placement
rule for assigned 1ups must therefore be changed.
20. Open the Product Part Inspector and go to the Packaging tab.
21. Enable the By user (view options) option in the Placement rule for assigned 1ups sec-
tion and enable the Centered option in the Offset section.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 439
1. It is easily visible in the magnified view that the clip path is not correct. Parts of the tuck-
in flap would negatively affect the visible packaging area.
440 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
2. We must modify the clip path to correct this. Disable Contents of Page/1up in View
Properties for the time being.
3. In the Graphics window, go to the Folding Sheet/Assembly Block tab. Select a 1up
here. Press the right mouse button to select Clip Path (Packaging) and then Define Line
Type as Clip Path. The default is 90.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 441
4. Use the crosshair pointer that appears to click the area shown below.
6. To better assess the result, show the page contents again. The effect is clearly visible.
The clip path is now correct in the critical place.
7. Click the Packaging tab in the Product Part Inspector: you see the Line Type for Clip
Path value has now changed from 90 to 11.
The change was also applied to the currently selected 1up only. To apply the new line
type to all 1ups, click the text box of the Line Type for Clip Path and press the Tab key.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 443
8. You might think the trim in the upper and lower rows is insufficient.
9. To edit the clip path, select the Path tool in the Tool bar and enable the clip path in the
Folding Sheet/Assembly Block graphics window.
444 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
10. When you open the shortcut menu for the Path tool, you will find tools for adding or
removing anchor points.
12. When finished, the clip path should roughly match the following screenshot.
13. Right-click and select Clip Path (Packaging)> Copy Clip Path in the shortcut menu of
the Folding Sheet/Assembly Block graphics window to copy the results in the first 1up
to all 1ups in the top row.
14. Choose the Frame tool tool from the tool bar and activate all 1ups in the top row.
446 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
15. Select Clip Path (Packaging) > Paste Clip Path from the shortcut menu to apply the
changed clip path to these 1ups.
16. Proceed in the same manner for the bottom row to edit the clip path.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 447
17. You should see the following result at the end of this exercise step.
You will now position typical packaging printing marks. We start with the so-called Station-
Number. This mark allows each 1up to be identified during finishing. You can thus, for exam-
ple, easily sort out faulty 1ups during finishing.
1. Select a 1up in the Folding Sheet/Assembly Block graphics window to set the Station-
Number.
2. Open the 1up Inspector and change to the Marks Resources tab.
4. Drag the StationNumber mark and drop it on the desired position of the selected 1up.
6. To define the start number and the enumeration direction, choose Assign Station Num-
bers in the Press Sheet graphics window shortcut menu or Folding Sheet/Assembly
Block.
7. In the First Station Number: text box, type 1 and enable the highlighted option in the
Variants region.
8. As the StationNumber is on the selected 1up only, we are now going to transfer it to all
other 1ups.
450 Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing – Print Media Academy
9. Go to the Marks tab in the 1up Inspector and click the Apply to all pages/1ups button.
11. We will now use an easy method to create an ink pickup bar to be exclusively saved in
the current job.
12. To do so, choose the Measuring frame tool in the toolbar and draw a frame roughly at
the place and of roughly the size you wish the ink pickup bar to have.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 451
To make changes to the X or Y values or the Width or Height of the frame, directly type
the values in the Press Sheet graphics window (highlighted in red).
13. The toolbar displays additional tools as soon as you draw a frame with the Measuring
frame tool.
15. The Ink Pickup Bar Editor opens as soon as you click the Ink Pickup Bar tool. Here you
can define the colors the mark is to contain, and the color height.
16. Save the mark. The mark appears in the graphics window as soon as you have saved
the ink pickup bar.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 24: Exercise 22 – Packaging Printing 453
17. It is advisable to mark the space between mark and 1up in white using a cover mark if
the ink pickup bar is too close to the 1up.
18. To do so, use the Measuring frame tool to draw a frame of the size that is to be marked
in white.
19. Click the Cover Mark tool in the toolbar. No further input is required for this mark. The
marked area is set to white and thus knocks out the space between mark and 1up.
PDF documents created for packaging printing often contain a spot color identifying the die
in the document. This spot color is not to be printed in the final product (JDF output only) but
should be visible on a form proof.
With Prinect Signastation you can define dies or any document color as cutting die. The
advantage is that this cutting die is printed on a form proof since the color is treated like the
proof color but is ignored during final output.
This option is visible only if you have enabled the Column for cutting die color option in
the General Preferences.
Print Media Academy – Chapter 25: Web offset printing 455
The print units of a web offset press are similar to those of a sheetfed offset press. Each
machine features two print units. Each print unit features an ink fountain and a fountain pan,
ink and damping rollers, a plate and a blanket cylinder. There is no impression cylinder. In
web printing there is no such cylinder because both paper sides are printed simultaneously,
i.e. “rubber against rubber”. The paper web runs between the two blanket cylinders that both
provide the required back pressure.
A web offset press is often configured as a 4-color machine on which, for example, 16 DIN
A4 pages can be printed. There are also many 24up and 32up presses, and the trend goes
towards even larger presses with 48up or 64up capacity.
At the machine tail the print product is immediately finished (folded, stapled or glued, stitched,
trimmed), producing a finished product in a single step. Web offset presses are used for lar-
ger jobs with higher volumes (as a rule 50,000 copies and more) in 4- or multi-color printing.
The paper is fed to the press via a splicer. The splicer allows on-the-fly roll change at high
printing speeds. Cutting-off the empty roll and splicing a new roll occurs with constant web
tension. The roll to be loaded into the press is unpacked, checked and registered.
Sheetfed offset presses can be easily stopped to make adjustments. Web offset presses run
at constantly high speeds during set-up and production printing. All adjustments must there-
fore be made during operation. Print image registration is checked with a stroboscope and
displayed on a monitor. The latest generation of heatset web offset presses are capable of
printing 80,000 to 100,000 copies per hour; most of today’s presses reach up to 50,000
copies per hour.
In order to minimize waste, all adjustments must occur at high speed. Depending on the
print form and the machine presets between 3,000 and 7,000 waste copies are required until
a perfect print result is reached. After printing the paper web must be folded to the page for-
mat so it can be stitched and trimmed.
Depending on the folding scheme defined for the final product the paper web can be slit into
two halves prior to folding. So-called turner bars then guide the web halves on top of each
other. Blast air ensures the printed image is not damaged. As an alternative the web can
also be folded across its entire width.
As a rule, the former folder - also operating with blast air - is used for the first fold. Downstream
of the former fold follow the jaw and chopper folder for the second and third fold.

The following exercise assumes a web press operating with separate printing plates.
In a first step you will set up new machine parameters for platesetter and web press.
In a second step you create a new output parameter and a new plate template. The plate
template is to comprise tiling in order to ensure correct registration during printing plate out-
put.
In a third step you create a new 16 up imposition scheme in Berlin format (312 x 470 mm) for
a single web press by means of the Fold Assistant for Web.

Print Media Academy – Appendix 497
Preferences
This section gives an overview of the possible Prinect Signa Station preferences. The Pref-
erences area lets you define default folders and make general settings applicable to pro-
gram operation. There are eight tabs where you can make settings: General, Paths, Names,
Defaults, Resources, Import, Processes and Option Chooser. For further information please
refer to the Prinect SignaStation Reference Manual.
Preferences – General
The General tab lets you set the view attributes, the interface language, the parameters for
automatic file names, and the default user. You can also permanently hide or show the mes-
sages again. Prinect Signa Station will start without login window using the specified default
user if you enable the Default User option.
Enable the Show Units checkbox to have every value followed by the selected unit
.
498 Appendix – Print Media Academy
Disable this checkbox when you do not wish to see units in the text boxes. You can verify
and, if necessary, also change the unit by way of the toolbar.
Use the Default unit of measure popup menu to define the unit used throughout the pro-
gram. You can, however, always change the selected default unit in individual text boxes by
manually typing the appropriate unit abbreviation.
The Cutting Die option appears in the Job Inspector’s Colors tab if you enable the Column
for cutting die color option. When you enable this option for a certain color, it will be treated
like the ProofColor during output.
Use the Display color popup menu to define the colors used for identifying folding
schemes/assembly blocks, paper, printing plate and the critical area. The critical area is the
printing plate part where ink cannot yet be applied.
1. To change the display colors, choose the desired option in the Display color popup
menu.
2. Then click the icon next the Display color popup menu.
Print Media Academy – Appendix 499
3. Adjust the desired color with the color sliders, or type values directly in the text boxes.
The selected color appears in the Current color area.
You can enable or disable the file naming options that are to be automatically applied when
a Signa job is saved in the Parameters for Automatic File Names section.
Usage of the folding sheet animation depends on the graphics adapter in the PC where
Prinect Signa Station was installed. Disable the Use hardware support in folding sheet ani-
mation option if your graphics adapter does not support the folding sheet animation.
Preferences – Paths
You must define the default paths for saving resources, jobs (assemblies), temporary fold-
ers, and PDF documents when you start the Prinect SignaStation application the first time.
You can also define a default folder for your output files here.
Use the Paths tab to change default folders at a later time. When a company operates sev-
eral Prinect SignaStation work stations, you should set up the folders on a server and spec-
ify these folders so all work stations can use the same resources. This facilitates the stan-
dardization of jobs and helps prevent errors.
500 Appendix – Print Media Academy
2. Browse to the folder you wish to select and click the Apply button.
Prinect Signa Station uses PDF files and Delta lists. To process PostScript files – without
first converting them to PDF – you must assign the Acrobat Distiller application by specifying
the Path to Acrobat-Distiller in the Select External Executables area. When you select Post-
Script documents for imposition, they will be automatically converted to PDF using the appli-
cation’s Distiller settings and loaded.
Specify the application for viewing PDF documents in the Path to Acrobat Reader area. This
will allow you to open pages in the selected Reader from within the application. You can
make late-breaking corrections when the selected viewer is Acrobat Professional.
Preferences – Names
You can use several layers in Prinect Signa Station. In some cases this is necessary if you
wish to position different PDF documents on different layers. In addition, you can, for exam-
ple, process multilingual documents in one job. One document can hold up to 12 layers.
The Names tab lets you freely name layers – for a better overview when you later assign
documents to separate layers.
502 Appendix – Print Media Academy
2. Enter the desired name. Use the Tab key to go to the next text box.
In the Surface Names region of the Names window you can accept the proposed names for
the sheet offset or web offset surfaces or assign custom names.
You can define the contents of marks variables Replacer 1 to Replacer 15 in the Free Text
Replacer Names table.
Print Media Academy – Appendix 503
Preferences – Defaults
In the Defaults tab you can specify defaults for Bleed, Routing Margin Min., Routing Margin
Max., Max. Head Gap and Max. Gap . These values are automatically imported when you
create a file if the respective option is enabled. You can always edit these values in the job.
We recommend that you enable the Scheme filter option if you wish to only view possible
variants in dependence of paper and single page size when selecting an imposition scheme.
One Folding Sheet per Sheet defines that exactly one folding sheet will appear on each
press sheet. 2ups, however, are still possible when this option is enabled. You can use the
arrow keys on your keyboard to, for example, move assembly blocks. The cut marks will
move according to the creeping values if creeping is enabled. Enable Fixed Cut Marks in
Creeping if the cut marks are to remain at their original page position. You can change the
folding sheet sequence in a Signa job because of pagination while the press sheet
sequence changes analogously. Enable the Constant Press Sheet Order option if you wish
the press sheet order to remain unchanged. It may not always be feasible to apply place-
ment rules and marks to all job pages. Changes will apply to the pages of the currently
selected folding sheet/assembly block only when you enable the Restrict ‘Apply’ functions in
Page Inspector option.
