CSAT 2022 Questions & Answers Series

21) X and Y run a 3 km race along a circular course of length 300 m. Their speeds. are in the
ratio 3:2. If they start together in the same direction, how many times, would the first one pass
the other (the start-off is not counted as passing)? (Topic: Time Speed Distance & Level: Easy)
(a) 2 (b) 3 (c) 4 (d) 5

Sol:
Method 1: Distances ratio is always equal to speeds ratio (As time is constant)
D1: D2 = 3: 2, & 3-2 = 1 ---→ 300, so for 3 it will be 3 x 300 =900
Number of meetings = 3000/900 = 3 (only integer value)

Method 2: Say time for X to complete one full cycle, 300/3 = 100 seconds
For Y, 300/2 = 150 seconds. After every 300 seconds (LCM of 100 & 150 is 300) they meet. i.e.
every third round of the faster person, 100 x 3 = 300.
Total rounds for him, 3000/300 = 10 but they meet in 3rd, 6th and 9th rounds.
Correct answer is (b)
