Midterm Pit
Midterm Pit
01
Situation 01: A liquid compressed in a cylinder has a volume of 1 liter at 2 MPa and
a volume of 990 m3 at 2.5 MPa. Determine the bulk modulus of elasticity of the liquid.
Situation 02: Calculate the specific weight (N/m3) of a gas at 25 °C, if R=117 J/kg-°K
under a pressure of 600 kPa absolute.
Situation 03: Convert 760 mm of mercury into height (m) of (a) oil of specific gravity
0.82, and (b) water.
Situation 04: A lead cube has a total mass of 80 kg. What is the length (cm) of its
side? Take specific gravity of lead equal to 11.3.
Situation 02: Determine the value and location of the horizontal and vertical
components of the force due to water acting on curve (quarter circle) surface AB per
foot of its length.
ASSIGNMENT NO. 01
Situation 01: Calculate the level “h” of the oil in the figure shown. Both tubes are
open to the atmosphere. Round your answer to the three (3) decimal places and in meter
unit.
Situation 02: A gas at 24 °C and 0.24 MPa abs has a volume of 40 liters and a gas
constant R of 212 J/kg-°K. Determine the mass of the gas. Express your answer in terms
of kilogram unit and round your answer to the three (3) decimal places. Hint: mass of
𝑚
the gas can be solve using 𝜌 = 𝑣 .
Situation 03: Determine the surface tension (N/m) in a tube with 0.2 m radius and
wetting angle of 0° and capillary rise of 5mm. Round your answer to the nearest whole
number.
Situation 04: Oil with a specific gravity of 0.80 is 0.91m deep in an open tank which
is otherwise filled with water. If the tank is 3.05m deep, what is the pressure (kPa) at
the bottom of the tank? Round your answer to three (3) decimal places.
Situation 05: How many meters of mercury are equivalent to 20.6m of oil having a
specific gravity of 0.82? Round your answer to two (2) decimal places.
SEATWORK NO. 01
Situation 01: A vertical rectangular gate 1.5 m wide and 3 m high is submerged in
water with its top edge 2 m below the water surface. Find the total hydrostatic force
acting on the gate and its location form the bottom.
Situation 02: The gate shown in the figure is hinged at A and rests on a smooth floor
at B. The gate is 3 m square and oil having sp. gr. of 0.82 stands to a height of 1.5 m
above the hinge A. The air above the oil surface is under a pressure of 7 kPa. If the gate
weighs 5 kN, determine the vertical force F required to open it.
SEATWORK NO. 02
Situation 01: Determine the magnitude of the resultant force per length due to water
acting on the radial tainter gate shown. Note: show your whole calculation!
