APPENDIX-I

Storage and handling of externally coated materials

1) Externally coated pipes, spools & other structural steel materials should be handled properly
to avoid damages to the walls, edges including the applied coating to elim inate reworks.

2) End covers or any similar materials should be used to prevent dust, dirt, sand, water, and
other contaminants from getting inside the pipes or spools that can lead to corrosion during
storage. End seal tapes should be used to keep the end covers in place and to protect the edges
from corrosion and surrounding contaminants.

3) All equipment & cradles that contact the coated surface of the pipes & structural materials
should be padded . Slings used for lifting the coated materials should be nylon or equivalent;
steel cables should not be used .

4) Coated materials should not be rolled or dragged on the ground . Coated pipes should be
protected by wrapping polyethylene strings near the pipe ends to avoid hitting each othe r.

5) For lifting operations, when a hook is used for handling large diameter pipes, the hook
should be of sufficient width and depth to fit inside the pipe and should be padded or covered
with rubber. Fork lifts directly lifting coated materials should be padded with nylon, rubber or
similar materials.

6) During storage, the coated materials should be placed with sufficient clea rance off the
ground on padded skids spaced and leveled so that the materials are supported without
damaging the coating . Extra care should be done to prevent direct contact of the
coated materials with the ground or ground moisture .

7) Coated pipes, spools & other materials should not be stacked directly against each other at
any time during storage or transportation . They should be separated by full encirclement,
non-compressible rubber padding or equivalent at least 10 mm thick. Additional separation
pads shall be used if required to keep the coated materials from touching each other.

8) All incoming materials for abrasive blasting & coating should be verified for shop marks &
material identification tags & should be recorded accordingly.

9) Pipes & spools to be externally coated should marked for traceability where it will not be
damaged during abrasive blasting or covered/erased during painting application .

10) Identification marks should be written inside the pipes or spools, if possible, with sufficient
distance to avoid damaging during abrasive blasting approximately 12 to 18 inches from the
pipe end .

11) Identification tags or shop marks of structural materials for abrasive blasting & painting
should be written in metallic sheets or similar materials to avoid being worn during the process
until transportation to the destination area .

12) After completion of painting & final inspection, accepted coated materials should be
arranged in sequence how it was received . First in, first out policy for ease of traceabil ity.
