1.

A solid insulating sphere of radius carries a net positive charge Q uniformly distributed

throughout its volume. A conducting spherical shell of inner radius b and outer radius c is

concentric with the solid sphere and carries a charge -2Q. Using Gauss’s law, find the

electric field in the regions labeled 1(r<a), 2 (a<r<b), 3(b<r<c), and 4(r>c) in the diagram

and the charge distribution on the shell when the entire system is in electrostatic

equilibrium. (12)

2. An electric dipole is defined as a positive charge q and a negative charge "q” separated by

a distance 2a. For the dipole shown in Figure below, find the electric field E at P due to the

dipole, where P is a distance y >> a from the origin. (5)

3. As shown in the Figure below, four-point charges are at the corners of a square of side a.

(a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the location of charge 2q. (8)

(b) What is the resultant force on 2q? (2)

4. Find an expression for the electric potential at a point P located on the perpendicular central

axis of a uniformly charged ring of radius a and total charge Q. Find an expression for the

magnitude of the electric field at point P. (8)

5. A thin rod of length ℓ and uniform charge per unit length λ lies along the x-axis, as shown in the

Figure. (a) Show that the electric field at P, a distance y from the rod along its perpendicular

bisector, has no x component and is given by E = 2keλ sin θ0/y. (5)
