The Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses

The Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, crafted in collaboration with the Philippine
Nurses Association, Inc. (PNA), represents the fundamental principles that guide ethical
nursing practice in the Philippines. It relies on the values outlined in the Code of Good
Governance for the Professions in the Philippines as well as is rooted in the authority
granted to the Board of Nursing by the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002. represents the

Nursing Act of 2002. To preserve the integrity and professionalism that are fundamental
to the nursing profession, the Board developed this code after consulting with relevant
parties, such as the PNA and connected organizations. This code outlines the moral
obligations placed on registered nurses, outlining the values and norms that should guide
their behavior in a variety of practice-related contexts, including patient care,
interpersonal interactions, and individual accountability. It highlights how important it is to
respect human dignity, promote wellness, and protect patients’ rights. Moreover, it
emphasizes the responsibility of nurses to uphold their competency by continuous
education and to promote social justice and easily accessible healthcare services.

Article I provisions is that health is a fundamental right for all, and it is entrusted to Filipino
registered nurses who are obligated to preserve it through such ways as promoting,
preventing, easing, curing patients’ sufferings and assisting them in dying peacefully. In
realizing this duty, nurses should understand various dimensions of human beings
including cultural, social, spiritual, physiological, psychological, or ecological factors. Yet
they must recognize that cultural variety and economic status greatly affect nursing care.
Additionally, these ethical considerations underline the importance of professionalism and
honesty in nursing practice which builds trust between a nurse and a client. As a result of
this the preamble sets high standards for Filipino registered nurses as informed by their
role in health promotion with morality.

Article II is for Registered Nurses and People that consist of sections 4 and 5, wherein
Section 4 states that values, customs, and spiritual beliefs held by individuals should be
respected, individuals have a freedom to make rational and decisions that should be
respected and the personal information that acquired in giving nursing care should be
held in a strict confidential manner. Section 5 is about the guidelines that a Registered
Nurse must observe, first the nurse should consider the individuality and totality of a
patient when they administer care. Next is that nurses should respect the spiritual beliefs
and practices of the patient regarding diet and treatment. Moreover, nurses should uphold
the rights of individuals and must take considerations into the culture and values of the
patient in providing nursing care; however, the welfare and safety of patients must take
precedence when in the event of conflicts.

Article 3 highlighted the importance of having ethical responsibilities and taking


accountability toward the patient to have quality and excellence care. For sections 6,7,
and 8 it emphasize how the nurses have to take the responsibilities to the patient, the
nurse should have the knowledge, skills, and attitude of an standard registered nurse to
have a effective nursing service to the patient through different situations and registered
nurse should have accurate documentations to have effective treatment to ensure to the
patient have a effective treatment and nurses should minimize the ineffective nursing
practice towards to the patient. for 9,10 it emphasizes the ethical principles and guidelines
of a registered nurse. All in all, the article ensures holistic and patient centered care and
to have effective treatment to the patient.

Article IV states that the nurses should be working in collaboration with the healthcare
crew as one in best interest to properly accommodate the desired treatment for the patient
at hand, nurses should maintain an equal and prosperous relationship with the workforce,
they must maintain professionalism at all situations, conform group activities with other
healthcare workers through factual and ethical-legal standards, does not act in any
prejudicial manner to other professions, and respects the right of other co-workers.
Article V, Registered Nurses, Society, and Environment, includes ethical principles that
emphasize respect for human rights and the promotion of a healthy environment. And a
registered nurse's noble concern is to establish links with the public, promoting local,
national, and international efforts to meet health and social needs as a contributing
member of society, where registered nurses shall be committed too. Guidelines to be
observed by a registered nurse must include being involved in community concerns,
being active in primary health care that will respond to the problems of society and the
healthy environment, and maintaining and being aware of their obligations that will always
uplift their nursing professions.

Article VI outlines ethical principles and guidelines for registered nurses it emphasizes
the importance of maintaining loyalty to the nursing profession and upholding its integrity
in order to support the advancement of the profession registered nurses needed follow to
the laws of organizations such as the Philippine nurses association and participate in
continuous learning in addition nurses are encouraged to actively engage in legislation in
order to improve their socioeconomic conditions and general welfare. The guidelines state
that to be a member of an Accredited Professional Organization and follow the nursing
standards actively engage in professional development and push for the adoption of labor
work standards.

Article 7 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses in the Philippines Focused on Administrative
Penalties, Repealing Clause, and Effectivity The certificate of registration of the RN shall
either be revoked or suspended for violation of any provisions of this Code pursuant to
Sec. 23 (f), Art of R. No. 9173. Article 7 emphasizes that nurses should continuously
update their knowledge and skills to provide safety and quality care to the patients. Failure
to do so may cause suspension or worse, revoking of license.

Reflecting back on this “Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses” emphasizes and shows
how nursing practice is changing and how important it is to have a moral compass to
navigate difficult healthcare environments. This code of ethics strengthens the dedication
of nurses to moral behavior and emphasizes their duty to carry out their professional
responsibilities with integrity and understanding by incorporating governance concepts
and upholding international ethical standards. Its growth together also highlights how
important stakeholder participation is to promoting moral behavior and guaranteeing
responsibility in the nursing profession. Nurses are committed to these principles because
they promote trust, respect, and confidence within their communities at the same time
they provide holistic care that responds to the needs of the individuals.
