Worksheet 1: Interview Questions

a) How would you rate your level of media literacy on a scale of 1 – 5.

Very poor Poor Average Good Excellent

1 2 3 4 5

b) How would you define media literacy?

Write your notes here:

I would define media literacy as the knowledge and skills needed to know when and what information is
needed; where and how to obtain that information; how to evaluate it critically and organize it once it is
found; but most importantly how to use it in a useful and ethical way.

c) Discuss your preferred media platforms or channels you use to access news and
other information.

Write your notes here:

I typically use media platforms like TikTok and Instagram do get updates on news related stories however
these are not always reliable and therefore I turn to news channels like News24 which tend to be far more
trustworthy to validate the information and stories I hear.

d) Explain some of the methods you use to ensure that the news you are reading
isn’t fake news.

Write your notes here:

The easiest way to ensure that I am not reading and passing on fake news is to check multiple sources and
sites to see that the information stays consistent. I also check dates and context of the article to make sure
that the news isn't outdated or taken out of context since sometimes old news stories resurface and are
shared as if they are current events.

e) To what extent could media biases affect public perception of a global issue?

Write your notes here:

Media bias can affect public perception when selective reporting, political bias and confirmation bias
occurs. Selective reporting can skew the public's understanding of the issue by emphasizing specific
viewpoints or events over others. Conservative and liberal outlets may present contrasting narratives about
the same issue, leading to divergent public opinions based on the sources people follow. People tend to
seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs and opinions. Media biases can reinforce these
biases by presenting information in a way that aligns with the audience's preconceived notions.
