Q1. [8M]

The following data pertains to a Pelton turbine:

gross head is 150 m; one-third of the gross head is lost in the penstock; mean runner speed is 18 m/s;
discharge through the nozzle is 1.2 m3/s; angle of deflection of the jet is 160. Show the velocity triangles
with jet and blade angles, and determine, (a) the power of wheel (b) the hydraulic efficiency.

Q2. [12M]

An inward flow reaction turbine with radial inlet and blade tip diameter equal to 67.5 cm and corresponding
breadth of 15 cm. The effective head is 21 m. The rotor diameters ratio is 1.5. If the guide vane angle is 10
and velocity of flow at inlet is 3 m/s, draw the velocity triangles and determine, (a) the speed of turbine (b)
the vane angle at outlet (c) the power developed.
