About Miguna Miguna

Miguna Miguna (38) is a large bull elephant named after a Kenyan
statesman who also likes to travel a lot. Built like a tank – all muscle, big
head and even bigger attitude, Miguna is rarely seen in Samburu National
Reserve. He is also one of only a handful of large bulls left in Northern
Kenya; the rest killed for their ivory or dead from natural causes. In June
2020, eager to find out how the next generation of bulls were navigating
the crowded landscape and staying safe, we managed to collar Miguna
during one of his brief visits to Samburu. It wasn’t long before his collar
started sending us some interesting data. We could see Miguna wasted no
time in asserting his authority, shadowing other bulls in the reserve and
chasing females, before heading north west. We’re keenly following
Miguna’s tracks on our app and look forward to seeing what he will teach
us about the ranging patterns of bull elephants and habitat connectivity.

Update
Update: Miguna recently surprised our researchers by making an
extraordinary five-day dash covering over 124km. He was last seen in
musth in the company of several female elephants in Samburu.
Afterwards, he headed west to Oldonyiro and spent three months resting,
no doubt enjoying a well-deserved holiday after his romantic escapades.
We thought he’d stay put, when suddenly on October 22nd he left
Oldonyiro, streaking north-east across some open and dangerous
landscape. We can’t be sure of his motives just yet, but presumably, the
rains were involved.
