Compare & Contrast Art Term 2 Homework

Colour Theory
In both images, there is a lot of unique colours used. For example, in Frank Stella’s piece of
work her colours look a little dark and mysterious however Wassily Kandinsky has gone for a
different approach by making some bright colours in her abstract piece of work. In addition
to Frank Stella’s work is that it looks extremely intense and as if there is a strong feeling as
the shapes seem so bunched up together whereas for Kandinsky’s piece of work it seem like
freedom as the shapes look so far apart gathering a feeling of liberty. Also the colour theory
looks like both of these pieces of majestic art look completely different from each other as
another feature is that in Stella’s piece of work, there looks like there is evil lurking inside of
this due to the dark and murky colours however Kandinsky’s art looks lively and energetic
due to the range of colours used.

Mood/Atmosphere
The mood Frank Stella’s piece of art makes me feels dreich and gloomy due to the colours
and how the tone is very dark; it also makes me feel sad because all the shapes are bunched
up together it reminds me of prison and how they are not to be set free. It also makes me
feel disturbed by its presence as I am oblivious to what may lurk in the core of this strange
art piece. However, in Kandinsky’s work it looks very lively, sends a happy mood towards
me, it even makes me feel joyful. This is because due to the abstract outcome in this piece
of work it feels like freedom in art as there are many spread out shapes which makes me
feel like there is no limit to show how creative you are and so it motivates to always stay
happy.

Technique
I think for Stella’s piece of work, her technique is extremely angular due to the jagged and
pointed edges of her shapes and the picture looks as a mix of organic and geometric
because of some straight lines but it may be organic as she may of taken some household
items and merged them together. Despite this, the artist might have taken this process very
slowly to get the precise angular lines. For Kandinsky’s piece of artwork, her work looks very
abstract and organic. This is because the abstractness of the lines differ from the modern
pieces of artwork as for a normal person they might just look like ordinary lines just placed
randomly but they might each have their own story to tell so therefore this piece of work is
also organic.
