Crochet Flower Pens

These charming, crocheted flowers have a useful purpose - they are pens! This quirky project is so fun to make,
you won’t be able to stop at just one; before you know it, you’ll have a whole bouquet! These flower pens would
make a lovely Mother’s Day, Galentine’s Day, or birthday gift.

Finished Measurements
Finished flower pen measures approximately 6.5” [16.5cm] tall.

Materials
• Approximately 20 yds [19m] sport weight yarn (CYCA#2) in each of three colors: MC (main color of the
flower), C1 (flower contrast color - this looks best if it is a darker version of the MC), and C2 (stem/sepals
color). This project would look best in acrylic, wool, or blend of cotton/wool or cotton/acrylic.
• US D/3 [3.25mm] crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Locking stitch marker
• Yarn needle
• A standard plastic ball point pen. I used these: https://a.co/d/fjNExkQ
• Hot glue gun (another kind of glue can be used as long as it works for adhering plastic and fabric)
• A very small amount of fiberfill stuffing

Yarn Used for Pens Shown

WeCrochet Brava Sport (sport weight, 100% Acrylic; 340 yards [311m]/ 3.5 oz [100 grams]; in each of the
following colors: Canary #28369, Custard #28379, Cream #28377, Rouge #638092, Blush #28367, Cotton
Candy #638092, White #642421,
Peapod #633895.

Gauge
Work through Row 7 of Stem Covering directions.
Piece measures 4.25” [10.75cm] x 1.25” [3.25cm].

Notes
Flower is made in 4 separate pieces: the Flower-Top Base is a circular piece made in the round without joins.
The Outer Flower is made in the round, without joins, beginning with an adjustable loop. This loop is left
open until flower is assembled, when it is cinched around the end of the pen to fit. The Stem/Sepals piece
is crocheted in turned rows. This piece is glued to the pen and then stitched around the pen to hide it. The
Flower-Top (Petals) piece is made in rows, then coiled up and stitched to the Flower-Top Base.

Turning chains do not count as a stitch.

Use a locking stitch marker to note the beginning of rounds.

Abbreviations

Blp = back loop Rnd(s) = round(s) Tr cl = treble cluster (see

Ch = chain RS = Right Side notes)

Special stitches
Treble crochet cluster (Trcl): Yo twice, insert hook into st, yo and pull up loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops on
hook] twice, repeat from * once more working into the same stitch, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook. 1
Trcl made.

Instructions

Flower-Top Base:
Rnd 1: With MC, make an adjustable ring, 6 SC into ring, pull on beginning yarn tail to tighten ring. Do not
join, and begin working in continuous rnds. Use locking stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each
round. 6 sts.
Rnd 2: 2 SC into each st around. 12 sts.
Rnd 3: [2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st] 6 times. 18 sts.
Rnd 4: [1 SC into each of the next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st] 6 times. 24 sts.
Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Weave in beginning yarn tail.

Outer Flower:
Rnd 1: With MC and leaving a long tail for sewing, make an adjustable ring, 18 SC into ring, pull on beginning
yarn tail to tighten ring slightly, but make sure the center hole is large enough to fit over the pen (this can be
tightened more later during assembly). Do not join, and begin working in continuous rnds. Use locking stitch
marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round. 18 sts.
Rnds 2-3: SC into each st around.
Rnd 4: [SC in each of next 5 sts, 2 SC into next st] 3 times. 21 sts.
Rnd 5: [SC in each of next 6 sts, 2 SC into next st] 3 times. 24 sts.
Rnd 6: SC Flp into each st.
Rnd 7: *[Sl st in next st, ch 2, DC] in next st, Trcl in each of next 2 sts, [DC, ch 2, sl st] in next st; rep from * 5
more times, fasten off.
Weave in ending tail. Do not weave in beginning tail.

Flower-Top (Inner Petals):

With C1, ch 10.
Row 1: Beginning with second ch from hook and working into the bottom of ch, [HDC, ch 2, HDC] in each st
across, turn. 36 sts.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, [sl st, ch 1, 4 DC, ch 1, sl st] into each of the 9 ch-2 spaces across row, sl st to fasten off
leaving long tail, do NOT turn. 9 petals made. Row 2 is a WS row.
Note: on the following row, you will need to work into each stitch, so try not to make the chain sts and sl sts
too tight on this row.

Row 3 (WS): Keeping same side facing, and beginning with a slip knot of MC on hook, SC into each stitch
across from Row 2.
Tip: Because the chain sts and sl sts from Row 2 can be a bit tight, you may find them difficult to work into.
If you have trouble inserting the hook under both loops, you can choose to only work under the back loops
of each of the chain sts and/or sl sts. Also- if you find that there is a sl st that is impossible to work into, you
can skip it without worrying too much about it.

Crochet Flower Pens

With RS up, coil the Flower-Top onto the Flower-Top Base forming at least 2 layers of petals. Using yarn tails
from the Flower-Top, stitch through all layers of the flower to secure it in place on the base. Leave yarn tail
from Base free to be used later for assembly.

Stem:
With C2, and leaving a long beginning tail, ch 21.
Row 1: Beginning with the second ch from hook and working into the bottom of the chain, 1 SC into each of
the next 20 sts. 20 sts.
Rows 2 - 7: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, SC into each st.

Do not fasten off.

Sepals:
Keeping same side facing, rotate work 90-degrees (like turning a steering wheel) in order to crochet along the
side edge of the rows.
Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 6 SC evenly spaced across side edge. 6 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, (does not count as a stitch), *sl st in next st, ch 5, beginning with the second ch from hook
and working into the bottom of the chain, sl st in next ch, SC in next ch, HDC into each of the next 2 chs, rep
from * 4 more times (5 sepals made), sl st into the last st. Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Assembly/Finishing
Determine which way you would like the sepals to curl. I chose to have my Sepals curl toward the flower, so I
set the Stem/Sepals piece on the table with the curl facing up. If you would like your sepals to curl away from
the flower, you can set the Stem/Sepals on the table so that the curl faces down toward the table.

Using a glue gun, draw a line of glue down the center of the stem covering. Draw another line of glue along
the bottom edge (the short side, opposite the sepals).

Crochet Flower Pens

Place pen along glue line and fold bottom edge of stem around the pen. Hold in place until glue cools/dries.
Note: The top ½” of the pen will not be glued to anything. This will be inserted into the bottom of the flower.

Use yarn needle and C2 yarn tail to seam the Stem Covering around the pen using a whip-stitch.

Place Outer Flower onto end of pen and pull on beginning yarn tail to tighten the opening around the pen to fit.
Remove outer petals from pen and using yarn needle, weave in beginning yarn tail to secure opening.

Crochet Flower Pens

Place Outer Petals back onto end of pen. Use yarn needle and the remaining C2 yarn tail to sew the sepals to
the bottom of the Outer Flower as shown. Make sure this is securely stitched all the way around (I like to stitch
around the bottom twice). This is the only way we secure the flower to the pen so it needs to be secure, and
when we add stuffing into the flower, it shouldn’t be able to escape from between the flower
and the Stem/Sepals.

Stuff the Outer Flower lightly. Then position the Top-Petal Base over the Outer flower, matching the un-used
loops inside of the Outer Flower with the edge of the Base. Using yarn needle and yarn tail, sew the Base into
the opening in the Outer flower (through the un-used loops) as shown.

Make stitches through the Outer Flower (between petals) that exit through the Top-Flower, and pull tight to
reduce the space between the Top Flower and the Outer Flower.

Weave in ends.
