Consulting Skills Assessment

How to use this toolkit

1. Print the assessment scorecard

2. Complete the assessment, marking answers on the scorecard. To get more objective answers, ask yourself
“How would my [client / peer / supervisor / friend / significant other] rate me?”

3. While completing the assessment, keep notes on any observations or reflections that come to mind. What
events, accomplishments, incidents, experiences lead to your ratings? While you could quickly complete the
assessment in 15 minutes, some consultants find value in spending 2-3 hours on this exercise.

4. Once completed, make a list of all the areas where you’d like to improve

5. Prioritize those areas. Pick the top three areas that you’ll focus on first. Ask: How valuable to my career would
it be if I were higher skilled in this area? How excited am I right now to make improvements in this area? Let
your excitement be your compass. Don’t prioritize an area out of a sense of obligation.

6. Develop an action plan (next slide) for those three areas.

7. Select just one of those action plans to start with. It is difficult to make progress on more than one thing at a
time while living the rest of your life.
Consulting Skills Assessment

Developing an action plan

1. Understand your why: Write down why you are seeking to improve this skill. What benefits will you
receive? Why are those benefits important to you? Write a letter to your future self, say 3 months from now.
“Dear Self, When you open this, I hope to have improved the following skill: ____. Here’s why I’m putting
effort into this… Here’s how I’m going to do it…”

2. Knowledge: Identify sources of insight. But the book, subscribe to the podcast, sign up for the course today.
But don’t use research as an excuse to delay.

3. Mentorship and coaching: If available, identify a more experienced consultant who can observe you and
provide feedback. Tell that person of the skill you plan to work on, and specifically request feedback.

4. Practice: Begin practicing the new skill today. Look for side projects or opportunities outside work to put the
skills into practice. If you’re working on negotiations as a skill, ask for a discount at the deli.

5. Journal: Write a short daily observation on how you employed the skill and what you did to develop that
skill. Focusing your attention in this manner will massively accelerate progress.

6. Set targets: Determine what counts as success. What will it look like if you improve this skill? Set a
milestone with a date.

7. Celebrate: We can quickly forget how much progress we have made. Create your own ritual. Give yourself a
certificate. Go out to your favorite restaurant. Celebrate your graduation.
