Objective: The learner evaluates a function and determines if it is a one-to-one. The

learner identifies real-life situations using one-to-one functions.
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: Grade 11

Learning across curriculum:

1. Science - Identifying one-to-one relationships in scientific experiments
2. Economics - Analyzing one-to-one relationships in supply and demand
3. Psychology - Understanding one-to-one relationships in behavior and emotions

Review Motivation:
1. Show a video clip of a popular game show where contestants have to match items
together in a one-to-one correspondence.
2. Conduct a quick survey among students, asking them to match their favorite hobbies
with the corresponding reasons why they enjoy those hobbies.
3. Present a where students have to match different shapes to form a one-to-one
correspondence.

Activity 1: Matching Functions

Materials: Worksheets with various functions, graphing paper, pencils
Instructions:
1. Distribute the worksheets to students.
2. Instruct students to evaluate each function and determine if it is a one-to-one.
3. After evaluating the functions, students should graph each function on the provided
graphing paper.
4. Once completed, students will compare their results with a partner and discuss their
answers.

Rubrics:
Criteria:
- Correctly evaluates if the function is a one-to-one (5 points)
- Accurately graphs the function (5 points)
Assessment Questions:
1. Is the function f(x) = x^2 a one-to-one? Justify your answer.
2. Graph the function f(x) = |x|.

Activity 2: Real-Life Situations

Materials: Index cards, markers
Instructions:
1. Divide the class into small groups.
2. Distribute index cards to each group.
3. Instruct students to brainstorm and write down real-life situations that can be
represented by a one-to-one function.
4. Each group will present their real-life situations to the class, explaining why it
represents a one-to-one function.

Rubrics:
Criteria:
- Accurate identification of a real-life situation (5 points)
- Clear explanation of how the situation represents a one-to-one function (5 points)

Assessment Questions:
1. Give an example of a real-life situation that can be represented by a one-to-one
function.
2. Explain why the situation you mentioned is a one-to-one function.

Activity 3: Application Problem

Materials: Worksheet with real-life application problem, pencils
Instructions:
1. Distribute the worksheet to students.
2. Instruct students to read the real-life application problem and identify the function
involved.
3. Students should evaluate the function and determine if it is a one-to-one.
4. After evaluating the function, students will solve the problem and provide a written
explanation of their solution.

Rubrics:
Criteria:
- Correct identification of the function involved (5 points)
- Accurate evaluation of whether the function is a one-to-one (5 points)
- Correct solution to the problem (5 points)
- Clear and concise written explanation of the solution (5 points)

Assessment Questions:
1. A company charges $10 for every hour of their service. Is this function a one-one?
Justify your answer.
2. A store offers a discount of 20% for every item purchased. Is this function a one-to-
one? Explain.

Analysis:
Review the outcomes of each activity as a class, discussing any misconceptions and
clarifying any difficulties encountered by students. Provide additional examples and
explanations to reinforce the concept of one-to-one functions.

Abstraction:
Summarize the concept of one-to-one functions, emphasizing the criteria for
determining if a function is one-to-one. Discuss the importance of one-to-one
functions in various fields of study.

Application:
Give the students a real-life problem that is related to the objective, such as analyzing
the relationship between income and expenses in personal finance. Students will use
their understanding of one-to-one functions to solve and explain the problem.

Assessment:
1. Create a quiz that includes multiple-choice and problem-solving questions related to
determining if a function is one-to-one.
2. Assign a project where students have to identify and analyze one-to-one functions in
real-life situations, presenting their findings to the class.

Assignment:
For homework, students will research and find three additional real-life situations that
can be represented by one-to-one functions, providing a written explanation for each
situation.
