DERIVING DIFFERENTIATION

RULES
If we follow the old methods and using the definition
of the derivative of a function, it will take us some time,
which is why differentiation rules are created which
these formulas greatly simplify the process.

Rule #1: Constant Rule

If f (x)=c, where c is any real number, then f’ (x)=0
The derivative of a constant is 0.
Example 1. If f (x)=6, then f ' (x)=0
Example 2. If f (x)=2 π, then f ' (x)=0

Rule #2: Power Rule

If f (x)= xn for any number, n then f’ (x)=n xn-1
The derivative of f (x)= xn is found by multiplying the
exponent, n to x raised to n-1.

Example: If f(x) = 2x9 ⟹ f’(x)18x8

1 −2

Example: If f ( x )=x ⟹ f ( x ) 13 x
3 ' 3

Rule #3: Constant times a Function

Let c be any constant. If g(x) g’(x)= cu(x), then
g’(x) = cf’(x).
The derivative of a constant times a function is
the constant times the derivative of
the function.
d d
Example 1 : dx ( 3 x ) =3 dx x =3( 4 x )=12 x
4 4 3 3
Rule # 4: Sum Rule
If f and g are both differentiable, then
d d d
dx
[ f ( x ) + g( x ) ] = f ( x ) + g ( x )
dx dx

d 4
Example 1 : ( x +2 x 3 )= d x 4 =4 x 3 +6 x 2
dx dx

Rule # 5: Difference Rule

If f and g are both differentiable, then
d d d
dx
[ f ( x )−g (x)]= dx f ( x )+ g ( x )
dx
d 4
Example 1 : ( x −2 x 3 ) = d x 4=4 x3 −6 x 2
dx dx

Rule #6: Product Rule

If f and g are both differentiable, then
d d d
dx
[ f ( x ) g (x) ]=f ( x ) dx g ( x ) + g ( x ) f (x)
dx
