Answer all questions in this section

1. Evaluate
𝑥2 −𝑥−6
(a) lim [3]
𝑥→3 1− 𝑥2 −8

(b) lim [3]

→ √

2. A curve with an equation 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑 has 𝑦-intercept at -2 and the curve passes

through the point (1, 2). The stationary points of the curve are at 𝑥 = −1 and 𝑥 = − .

(a) Find the values of 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 and 𝑑. [6]

(b) Determine
(i) the point of inflexion, [2]
(ii) the nature of the stationary points. [2]

3. Find the value of 𝑘 if ∫ (12𝑥 + 9)𝑒 𝑥2 𝑑𝑥 = 3𝑒 − 3, where 𝑘 > 0. [6]

4. Find the particular solution of the differential equation − = 𝑥 − 1 which satisfies the
condition of 𝑦 = 1 when 𝑥 = 0. [8]

5. If 𝑦 = 𝑒 , show that 1 − 𝑥2 𝑑𝑥2
− 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑦. [3]

Hence, find the Maclaurin series for 𝑦 up to term in 𝑥 [5]

6. (a) Using the trapezium rule with six ordinates, estimate the value of ∫ 𝑑𝑥 correct to

four significant figures. [5]

(b) Is the value in (a) over-estimated or under-estimated? Give a reason. [2]

(a) Find 𝑥 and 𝑦-intercepts of both curves. [2]
(b) Sketch both curves on the same coordinate axes, and indicate the region bounded by the curves
and 𝑦-axis. [3]
(c) Find the area of the region bounded by both curves and the 𝑦-axis for 𝑥 ≤ 0. [5]
(d) Determine the volume of the solid generated when the region bounded by both curves and the
𝑦-axis for 𝑥 ≤ 0 is revolved completely about the 𝑦-axis. [5]

8. Molecule 𝑃 changes continuously to molecule 𝑄 during a chemical reaction at high temperature

and pressure in a chamber. At the beginning of the reaction, the numbers of molecule 𝑃 and molecule
𝑄 are 𝑝 and 𝑞 respectively. Throughout the reaction, the total number of molecues 𝑃 and 𝑄 remains
unchanged. At any time, 𝑡, in seconds, the rate of the molecule 𝑄 produced is directly proportional to the
product of the number of molecule 𝑃 and the number of molecule 𝑄. Given that 𝑥 is the number of
molecule 𝑄 that has been produced at time 𝑡.
𝑑𝑥
(a) Show that 𝑥 satisfies the differential equation 𝑑𝑡
= 𝑘(𝑝 − 𝑥)(𝑞 + 𝑥), where 𝑘 is a constant.

(b) Express 𝑥 in terms of 𝑘, 𝑝, 𝑞 and 𝑡. [9]
(c) Determine the limiting value for 𝑥. [2]
(d) Sketch the graph of 𝑥 against 𝑡. [2]
