5. PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION
This procedure describes of repairing tack weld and weld defect that found as
result of Non Destructive Examination or during Visual inspection. All unsound
weld or defective weld shall be removed from the equipment and replaced according
to approved repair procedure. The repair procedure shall be in writing and includes
information of method that used for defect removal, inspection, welding procedure
and detail of NDE for repair area.
Repair welding, inspection and examination shall be performed in accordance with
the following procedure. Removal of defect by chipping, grinding or gouging shall be
done in such a manner as to avoid reducing the adjacent base material thickness,
if a reduction has occurred it shall be returned to its original condition with buttering
method. Complete removal of defect shall be verified by NDE before repair is started.
Repair welding shall be performed only by qualified welder and using qualified approved
procedure. Repair of major defect and all repairing in plate or forging require prior
approval from customer.

6. TYPE OF DEFECT
6.1 Unacceptable Fit Up
Refit up, weld repair the thinner part and mismatch. The welding inspector shall
review before it is attempted.
6.2 Unacceptable Welding
Weld metal that found contain unacceptable flaws by visual or other non-
destructive methods shall be repaired by PT. Swadaya Graha. The client
representative shall approved acceptability of weld containing flaws.
6.3 Correction of Crack in Weld or Base Metal
Identify length of the crack by the Magnetic Particle Examination. Remove the
weld metal a minimum of 1 inch each from the crack starting outside to the
crack tip and working toward the center. As general note, the use of thermal
metal removal method sometimes will cause crack to extend into material
or cause new crack to extend into previously material. The excavation
shape shall be in accordance with the approved qualified repair weld
procedure.

7. DEFECT REPAIR AND REMOVAL REQUIREMENT

Removal of weld metal or portions of the base metal shall be done by machining,
grinding or air carbon arc gouging. Oxy-fuel gas gouging is not permitted. The
remaining weld metal or base metal shall not be nicked or undercut. Defective portion
of weld shall be removed without substantial removal of base metal.
7.1 Repair by Grinding
7.1.1 Excessive Convexity or Overlap
Remove by grinding away excess weld metal.
7.1.2 Excessive Concavity of Weld or Crack Undersize Weld
Clean and deposit additional weld metal using an approved weld
procedure. And shall be performances for qualified welder.
7.1.3 Excessive Weld Porosity, Slag Inclusion and Incomplete Fusion
Remove defective portion and re-welded.
7.1.4 Arc Strikes
Remove the arc strikes by grinding and ensure the thickness of
material shall be within the required tolerance.
7.2 Repair by Buttering
7.2.1 Mechanical Damage on Joint Surface
Adding of material by welding on one or both faces of a joint, prior to
the preparation of the joint for final welding. After complete weld metal
(buttering) must be examined by either liquid penetrant test or by
magnetic particle test
7.3 Repair by Welding
7.3.1 Undercut
Undercut can be often repaired by grinding and re-welding. Important
things that should be considered for repairing defect are:
a. The area that have repaired shall be examined by PT or MT
to ensure that defect have been removed completely prior to
welding.
b. The surface to be welded shall be cleaned thoroughly before
welding.
c. Repair shall be performed in accordance with assigned WPS
