CV461: DESIGN OF TIMBER STRUCTURES

TUTORIAL WEEK 6

1. A softwood timber beam of grade F11 and dimensions 250x100(dxb) is expected to be used
as a hoist to carry a new air-conditioning unit that weight approximately 15kN. Noggings
for the ceiling panels are spaced at 1.2m. The beam span approximately 4.5meters with and
supports a dead load of 0.30kN/m which accounts for the self-weight and finishings.
Perform a limit state design check for this beam to see whether it can adequately support
this loading. Check for:
a) Bending strength
b) Shear Strength
c) Serviceability deflection limit of L/360

2. After your analysis

a) What are the results?
b) How recommendations would you give to improve the design.

2. A strut is exerting a force N* of 25kN at a angle of 36deg into a sawn hardwood timber beam
grade F14. Fortunately, the beam is restrained by external supports, however, the beam must
be checked for bearing strength. Check that this 150x45mm timber beam will be adequate to
support this load.
