Home Learning Thinking Activity -11

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this HLT, you will revisit some key algebra vocabulary and explore some new vocabulary.
 Consider an algebraic expression 7m2 + 4.
Here ‘m’ is known as the ‘literal coefficient’ or ‘variable’ while 7 which is multiplied to m 2 is
referred to as a ‘numerical coefficient’ or ‘coefficient’. In this expression, 4 is known as
the constant and the power of the variable m is 2.
Q.1. Classify the different parts in the expression 5a – 2 by identifying the variable, term,
constant and coefficient in the following:

Q.2

Q.3. Write an algebraic expression for the following statements.

(i) p divided by 12
(ii) 12 less than p
(iii) The product of 12 and p

 Polynomials are mathematical expressions made up of variables and constants by using

arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They represent the
relationship between variables. A polynomial comprises constants and variables, but we
cannot perform division operations by a variable in polynomials.
An easier way to identify whether a given expression is a polynomial is to check whether: (i)
It contains any variable in the denominator and
(ii) It contains any exponent/index/power which is a negative integer or a fraction.
Q.4. Observe each expression given below carefully to explain whether it is polynomial.
Q.5 Write the algebraic expressions for the statements given below:

a) Increase your fibre content 6 times what you eat now.

b) Bobby collected 25 shells more than what Anna collected.

c) Brad is paid a flat of $50 per week and $5 for every extra hour.

Q.6. Observe the number of terms in each expression to classify them depending on the number
of terms it contains.

Q.7. Simplify the following expressions by including the logical steps of your solving.
