CONCEPT NOTES
Theories on the Origin of Life
1. Special Creation Theory. This is based on the Genesis that God created all
things.
2. Spontaneous Generation Theory. Believed that life originated as a
spontaneous event. A hypothetical process by which living organisms develop
from nonliving matter.
3. Biogenetic Theory. Living things created other living things. This theory
arose when microscope was invented.
4. Abiogenetic Synthesis Theory. Believed that life began in the primordial
seas.
EXERCISE
Identify the theory to which these evidences/bases align to. Write your
answer before the number.
1. All source of creation is God.
2. Each animal and plant produced its own kind.
3. According to Alexander Oparin, a Russian biochemist, the first organisms
were probably formed out of organic chemicals and processes that much
simpler than those that exist today.
4. Microorganisms like bacteria can give rise to many more bacteria.
5. During ancient time when microscope was not yet invented, people
believed that living things originate from noliving things.
6. Colloidal substances led to the formation of viruses.
7. Complex compounds suitable for the nourishment of living things came
from the reaction sunlight in water containing carbon dioxide and
ammonia.
8. Proteins, carbohydrates and other compounds developed into coacervates
converting the sea into a sort of ‘hot soup’ where cells formed.
9. Earth worms grow out of tiny eggs that had been laid by other worms.
10. When egg cell and sperm cell unite, they form a zygote.
